After getting my beta invite today and downloading today I also cancelled today. I've beta tested quite a few MMO's and to be honest this is nothing worth being excited about. This game is not in any way ready for an April release. The character animations are stiff (robotic to be exact) the landscape may be pretty but there is something wrong with it. Its fake, empty, a total absence of feeling. Most of what I saw was pretty much the same way. Combat is bland and even more simple than World of Warcraft to figure out. I got my level 5 title for not dying once (suprise suprise) and that was pretty much as much as I could stomach. I know the fanclub will flame me for what I write, but all of you who pre-ordered this game should be worried. Turbine may have great plans, ideas or whatever but at this current time this game is not good. I'm sure this game will still appeal to many players, I however am not one of them. P.S. My wife is also an avid MMO player, and her descriptions are a bit more pessimistic than mine.
I completely agree with you. I logged into the beta and jus thought "wtf is this?" and gave up. No IP can cover up for the aweful feel of this game. This game will most likely bankrupt Turbine if enough people feel the same way which is a shame as they have made some good games but botched all of them eventually.

Well I don't think it takes 20 levels to figure out the basic game dynamics. Character animation and atmosphere will for the most part stay the same and I agree with him on his comments of the two (of course that is personal taste more then anything else). Also from my experience with this game it doesn't get any more difficult as you continue on with the story. In either case I decided to try the game again as a human guardian, and while I did have a bit more fun then with my minstrel and champion I still stick by my previous statement of the game not being to my taste. Oh and I have a few minor complaints while I am here. They may seem silly to you but they bothered me, and I haven't seen them mentioned.
1. Since this is a story driven roleplaying game more then one person should be able to share the same first name. It's kind of awkward having to think up a unique first name every time you create a new character, Especially when the server gets filled up.
2. It would be nice while playing music if you could hold your notes out for more then 1 note. I know this is silly and really doesn't change a thing, but seeing as this was my favorite part of the game it did disappoint me.
3. My biggest complaint though is that armor and weapons are just dull to look at. Maybe I never obtained the highest end equipment, but you shouldn't have to reach the end game to look decent.
LOL , It is funny to see the Vanboys and Eve folk try to dismantle a solid game.
The reasons I pre-orderd.
1. It is Lord of the Rings (Great story, awesome books and movie. Fanboys will love it)
2. The animations and character models are very well made ( better then anything Ive seen in 3 years) (Bland, boring, your toon doesn't even do any animation when sitting.)
3. The art has a direction in it's design and is appealing to me (It is pretty, but nothing breathtaking. Graphics got that guild wars look)
4. Their is a unique flavor to armor and weapons that seem to repell leet gamers pwnzoors (Nothing special here. EQ2 has better looking armor and weapons...actually ArchLord even does and that game sucks)
5. It takes team work and skill to complete missions (Typical quests like every other MMO. Kill 10 rats, report back to me.)
6. The instancing is done very well with bringing the epic story in focus(They did invest time in the storyline. It is enjoyable)
8. The open world has lot's of room for growth (I agree)
9. The monster play has elements of counter strike which immdedialy hooked me(Totally turned me off. Playing pre-made level 50 monsters is basically for casual carebears. If REAL PVP is your thing, this isn't for you)
10. The community is above any community that is currently playing an mmo (Minus Ao)(Awesome community)
11. The all around feeling of progressing (in a lot of games you gain levels , but you have no real value or feeling of progressing, which in turn becoming redundant and boring )(I didn't have this feeling at all. It seemed the same as all others)
12. Turbine is giving 110% to this title. (I would hope so, since it's a big named franchise)
13. The music system is awsome, I love music ! (Music was good)
14. The atmosphere of the game , chilling in a inn , sipping on some hard ale , while sitting down and laughing with the peoples enjoying themselves. Beautiful thing (I don't roleplay. But for people who do...have fun.)
To the troll you can continue to troll but for the most part , you look like an ass, cause everyone knows the game is a solid piece of work that is still in CB and is going to grow over the years with massive content. So have fun on your big empty generator island or star system ,and let the real gamers get to the gaming.
The game is an ok game for casual players and players who love the lore. It's not for hardcore or pvp gamers. I will wait a year and see where it goes before I buy it. But hopefully by then Age Of Conan and Warhammer will be around. all this is my opinion. If you love the game, that's cool. I hope it stays around, i'm curious to see what happens.
I just don't like the idea of playing the pre-made monsters. Plus it's got more of a PVE feel to it especially since they have quests you do for the points to upgrade your monster. Why would I quest with him and not my main to get it up to level 50. Can you play your main toon at level 50 in the PVP zone? If so, that might be interesting. But how gimp will you be competing against monster toons that been playing for a long period of time and have max upgrades?
I will never understand why people who don't like a game want absolutely convice the full earth that their opinion is the best....
are you so frustrated that other people are able to enjoy a game you don't !
If you don't like this game for any reason you have found to justify this to yourself , it is your rigth, but , please , let the people who do not share your opinion the rigth to appreciate this game !
The real issue is that LOTRO will likely not have much replay value - while the full story line is an excellent change from most MMOs, there would be little reason to play through a second character. Also, I found the play experience to be far too easy. Perhaps most people prefer the WoW easy play style, it just isn't for me. I am betting that this game will be success but I won't be a subscriber.
If you like it, good on you. I'm not holding a blow torch to your back while your hanging upside down in my garage telling you, "don't like the game, or i'm going to burn you." I just pointed out things I DON'T LIKE from playing the BETA. People have the opportunity to test it out and be there own judge. And if I want to voice my opinion in a non-trolling manner, um...I will.

Dude, seriously you just made a thread in the Vanguard forums saying how Lotro is going to kill Vanguard. You then went on with all sorts of crazy comments of how deep the game is and how it will bring in a new group into MMO's and usher in a new era in PVE mmo's. This is so hypocritical, if you enjoy Lotro great, but if you want to talk about "not trolling" maybe you should practice what you preach. You make the eveleetist and the Vanbois as you describe them look credible with post that you have made.
Here's a tip giving people a false impression of the game you play or hyping it as something more than its otherwise known will backfire big time, this happens time and time again. Don't shill your game to people like a used car salesman if you want it to do well because you will end up with a bunch of disillusioned people back here after they realize that much of what you said was just BS.
Just for reference I've been in the beta of Lotro for nearly the whole time but stopped using my account. I played to lvl 15 or so and just didn't feel inclined to log in any longer. It reminds me of a single player game that once I finished it I would move on to the next game. If a single player game is what people are looking for they probably won't be disappointed but don't champion the game the second coming of Christ for god sake, fans such as yourself do more harm than good for your games of choice. This will be Lotro's shortcoming though, people will play for 3 to 6 months. plow through the content and move on to the next flavor of the month, just my opinion.
Some of us are looking for a more of a world to build a community and cities in, in other words we want a game that has room to grow and provide us a place to go after work for entertainment, SWG was my place of choice for years and now I hope that Vanguard can become that "world". I'm not trying to put down Lotro or hype up Vanguard, they are for people looking for two completely different experiences.
I can see many die hard fans of Lotro changing their tune when the newness wears off and they have capped out their lvl and run out of things to do, WOW countered this with the raiding time sink to keep subs, but what is Lotro going to do to counter this? Like I said not bashing the game as much as just curious what is in place to keep people playing after the rush to max lvl. The game is a PVE game with a mini game of pvp thrown in as a afterthought so whats the hook after max lvl, I say thrown in because of its introduction so late in development when many, such as myself, felt letdown by the fact we couldn't roll a orc or a troll. I assume raiding would have to be that time sink but now I'm not sure if thats the case, and monster play doesn't seem like something that will keep people around over the long term.
You notice you didn't address the fact you were trolling and then calling someone else on the same thing. You are just as bad as the people that over hyped Vanguard, which by the way I wasn't one of them. Check my post I tell people to get a buddy key and try it or I say its not for everyone. Thanks for your concern but the fact is for someone that calls people out for trolling you do more than your fair share.
Oddly enough I notice you didn't address any of my points on the game just blindly insulted me since I'm not worshiping your game of choice. I won't sink to your lvl however since I'd rather have people take me seriously and see that even when I enjoy a game I don't sugar coat the game to try to draw people in, everyone has to make their own opinion, notice I never bash Lotro and simply leave it at not my cup of tea and list my concerns with the design. The post I put up isn't trolling its a legit post on the game and a call for you to take some of your own advice.
Ok...maybe I'm a little lost....but...uh...Sol....Trey....you both like LOTRO....so....why are you going at it again? I mean, according to some folks anyone who likes this game is a "carebear", so shouldn't we be friends?
Nevermind....re-read some of Trey's posts. Carryon, carry on.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I started playing virual fighter back in 1993 , the creator of the game was Yu Suzuki (my all time favorite developer) who leads the Am 2 Sega team. What does this have to do with mmo's you ask, for me a lot of things. Because of virtua fighter I got an early sense of what good body position and character animations should look like . I played All of the Virtua games because they are the pinnacle (that word pinnacle , one of my fav's) character animations and positions for me. I base a lot of what I see in mmo's on what parts of the character look fluid and in a constant state of motion. The way every move is intermingled into each other , hence VF combo systems.
When I play Lineage 2 the animations and fluidity was that of no other mmo I tried at the time , brings very beautiful motions together to create a breath taking display of art and movement, The character designs and over all artistic design made that game a work of art in my opinion, and to this day that game will always live in my heart even though it is now ruined from botters and gold sellers.
Lord of the Rings Online, from how I look at games now fits all that i described, art, fluid motion in actions, though not as elegant as L2 but distinctive. The angles of the body parts are postitioned, how the stride looks when the avatar is stretched out, he doesn't look like a stiff Barby doll in his play house. The arms are pumping and he is really moving. Some games fail to achieve that which is on of the most simpliest things, make a character run. Some of the Lord of theRing';s character run different, and distinctive, elf kind have a weird stride cause they are tall and slender race, dwarfs run like little stumper trucks cause they are short , ect. The game is really coming into it's own with the Turbines ability to create in such a restrictive IP.

I agree LOTRO is likely not for PvP'ers, but could you define what you mean by 'hardcore' when pertaining to an MMO?
And if you were in charge of LOTRO, how would you make it more hardcore?
Monster Play is actually closer to REAL PVP (Counterstrike, Quake, etc) you know skill based PVP.
The PVP that people are upset about is the fact that they can't run around and gank people who are lower level then them. Which is kind of silly since that is actually pretty carebear for the higher level player since there is no risk in it.
Everytime you see PVP being brought up it is always in the context of wanting the danger of leveling up and having someone kill you, but in reality what that person really means is they want the right when they are a high level player to kill low level players.
Skill based PVP games more and more are games that allow for as equal footing as possible in a MMO, such as DAoC, WoW's Battlegounds, WAR, LOTRO, etc.
Gone are the days of Asheron's Call Darktide server or Ultima Online when it first came out. This type of PVP is just too niche for MMOs now adays. The only game even close to that type of system is basically vaporware (Darkfall).
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
agree...I've played Wow and play Eq2, and unless your really a big LoTR person I did'nt see anything new in this game since being in beta and playing for the last month or so..

As for his level 5 title experience all i have to say is wow.
He judges a game from something that takes less than 1 hour to accomplish.
Talk about jumping to conclusions without any experience.
Don't quit your normal job to become a gamereviewer.
want something new.. umm how about it is playable on a mid range computer, has a ton of content and does not CTD regularly. Name me one MMO that has happened with in the last year and a half LOL
Uhhhh.....wow.....none of that is new. Mid range systems today were higher ranged systems a year and a half ago so all games within that time period play on them and therefore negate the "new features" you've just listed. And anyway, how is any of that new? I mean the idea that a game NOT crashing to desktop could be considered new is ludicrous.
Well anyway, I tried the game out during the stress test, and just didn't feel it was really the game for me. Thats not to say it isn't a good game because its definitely a solid title, but I just couldnt get into it. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with it really, but I just know it didn't grab me.

I agree. The only other games I truly play is counter-strike:source for my killing spree and Ao when I need a quick sci-fi fix
I just saw this post and since the topic is still being discussed, I wanted to clear up a few incorrect statements and add my own comments for anyone who hasn't tried the game yet:

LOL , It is funny to see the Vanboys and Eve folk try to dismantle a solid game.
The reasons I pre-orderd.
1. It is Lord of the Rings (Great story, awesome books and movie. Fanboys will love it) Not a fanboi of LOTR... loved the movies, but that was not what drew me into this game. It's the whole package.... graphics, performance, community, gameplay, quests and so on.
2. The animations and character models are very well made ( better then anything Ive seen in 3 years) (Bland, boring, your toon doesn't even do any animation when sitting.) Incorrect. Your character moves while sitting, turns his head, looks around, moves his feet. You can actually sit and smoke a bit of pipeweed if you want.
3. The art has a direction in it's design and is appealing to me (It is pretty, but nothing breathtaking. Graphics got that guild wars look) Might not be breathtaking to you, but to many, it's some of the best enviroments they've ever seen.
4. Their is a unique flavor to armor and weapons that seem to repell leet gamers pwnzoors (Nothing special here. EQ2 has better looking armor and weapons...actually ArchLord even does and that game sucks)How far in the game did you get? Some of the weapons and armor at higher levels are incredible.. detailed, great particle effects and quite unique.
5. It takes team work and skill to complete missions (Typical quests like every other MMO. Kill 10 rats, report back to me.) Incorrect. While there are fetch and bring back quests, there are epic instanced quests that are almost like participating in a movie, great quests filled with lore and some greatly detailed quests that help move the storyline ahead. I personally think the questing system in LOTRO to be one of the best I've seen.
If REAL PVP is your thing, this isn't for you) Incorrect. You only start MP with a premade level 50 character. As you evolve thru the main game or MP, you earn destiny points which can be used to purchase new abilities for your Monster and therefore become more unique. Also, don't forget the other side of MvP is regular players over level 40 who can enter the area too. Not even going to comment on the "carebear" remark

Hardcore means nothing more than people who have more time on their hands to play. It has nothing to do with difficulty in game. Anyone who has more time to play will eventually know what buttons to press or what to do in order to defeat an epic monster.
The above are my opinions also, but I did correct some "facts" that you stated that were obviously incorrect.

This coming from someone that trolls the VG forums looking for any and every reason they can to bash that particular game. It's been funny as hell reading throught is thread and seeing some of the people like like this guy and jackdog putting down the op for his opinion after they post a lovely piece on the VG forum about how much that game sucks.
Rather hypocritical I would say. You guys downing a game on one forum and then belittling anothers opinion of the game you enjoy. Say it with me now, HYPOCRITS.
I'll prolly give the game a shot when it's released, and form my own opinion of it.

LOL, I point this exact thing out to him and he flamed me repeated a couple pages back. The flaming was bad enough that 3 or 4 of his post were deleted and by the fact he hasn't posted since I think he received another temporary ban that he admits he has had many of. Actually in one post he actually admits to trolling other forums daily so at least he knows he's a troll.

Sounds interesting. I may give it another try at open beta. I know they will improve alot fo stuff once people start playing it.

Regardless to each his own and happy gaming
Peace
Edited for grammer
Oddly enough I notice you didn't address any of my points on the game just blindly insulted me since I'm not worshiping your game of choice. I won't sink to your lvl however since I'd rather have people take me seriously and see that even when I enjoy a game I don't sugar coat the game to try to draw people in, everyone has to make their own opinion, notice I never bash Lotro and simply leave it at not my cup of tea and list my concerns with the design. The post I put up isn't trolling its a legit post on the game and a call for you to take some of your own advice.
Peace
Ok...maybe I'm a little lost....but...uh...Sol....Trey....you both like LOTRO....so....why are you going at it again? I mean, according to some folks anyone who likes this game is a "carebear", so shouldn't we be friends?
Nevermind....re-read some of Trey's posts. Carryon, carry on.

One thing that people forget is that...
I't takes time to LEARN things.
It does also take a certain amount of time until you ENJOY things and feel COMFORTABLE with them.
Having an opinion too early is just killing your enjoyment of anything.
And last,
Good luck with whatever you SPEND time with.
So according to u dying alot is consider challenge? someone needs to have their head checked.

Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
want something new.. umm how about it is playable on a mid range computer, has a ton of content and does not CTD regularly.

I just saw this post and since the topic is still being discussed, I wanted to clear up a few incorrect statements and add my own comments for anyone who hasn't tried the game yet:
The game is an ok game for casual players and players who love the lore. It's not for hardcore or pvp gamers. I will wait a year and see where it goes before I buy it. But hopefully by then Age Of Conan and Warhammer will be around. all this is my opinion. If you love the game, that's cool. I hope it stays around, i'm curious to see what happens.Hardcore means nothing more than people who have more time on their hands to play.

Actually in one post he actually admits to trolling other forums daily so at least he knows he's a troll.Peace
