Seems like a fair review to me.. a bit short and didn't go into any detail. Again most of Vanguard's marks against it come from stability issues and incomplete content. If you don't like Vanguard that's fine, but realize that when a reviewer rates the game badly they aren't trumpeting your anti-Vanguard crusade...they're simply stating reality which is that Vanguard is not a finished game (and I don't mean that in the cop-out way...I mean the game was not in a releasable state when they released it and to that I have a big fat "DUHHH" for you).

Most of the reviews that I've read have went past stability issues. There have been many mentions of graphical glitches, bland and uninspired graphics, tedious and dated gameplay, boring old been there-done that type quests, etc. Of course, a lot of this is subjective, and it is almost always refuted by the game's fans. I suppose a lot of it is opinion.
I wish that reviewers would put a date they played the game and how much in-game time they spent with the game when they do a review. It would make it easier for us readers to assess how much weight to give to their perspective.
I didn't really disagree with anything that the reviewer had to say about Vanguard in the review, but that's because he didn't really say anything that you couldn't have swapped out Vanguard's name and put in a half-dozen other recently released games.
Is there a new template in Word called MMO review, or something? Where you just plug in a few key words to make it fit the MMO you are reviewing and then press Enter. Bingo, instant review. Come on, I'd expect a bit more from PC Gamer. I mean that review was fine for a site like Bob's MMO's Reviews & Small-Engine Repairs
But from PC Gamer? Aren't they one of the bigger computer gaming magazines? That's the best they could come up with? Yikes! We've seen a lot better reviews from our own patronage here on this forum. Heck, even Cymdai's preview "review" was better than that - and it was a rough-draft preview for crying out loud.
Anyway, like I said. His opinion of the game was fine (what there was of it); the review in general just lacked any real information or depth from which a reader could really make any sort of decision on.

This may come as a bit of a blow to Sigil because PC Gamer (UK) is the biggest selling PC games mag over here. Their reviews are usually pretty sound. Who cares anyway, its only a review I suppose.
Why did the review make an issue that when he killed a goat he got gloves from it? I mean, this happens in what, just about every mmo.
Why do they keep refering to the combat as being the same as wow? Don't recall any mention of WoW being like EQ. Not to mention the combat is quite a bit dif.
The score was fair but I don't think that the way the writer wrote the review was. Especially when they refer to the bags as being anal. I was accually glad Sigil did the bags the way they did. Sucks running out of space cause you have to dedicate a couple of bags to harvesting and crafting tools and supplies.
Eh, whatever is whatever. You like the game or you don't. No big deal.

Even thought the game has its annoyances (like the steep death penalty you have to endure) it's a very accomplished title with a lot of rewards for a dedicated player.
80
Games Radar
The world that it all takes place in is amazing on terms of size and beauty. However, this is a hardcore MMO designed first and foremost for devoted players with lots of time to invest - just to get to level 10 will take you a few days, whereas you can hit that level in "WoW" in a long afternoon.
80
Gamer's Hell
It has certainly impressed me in many ways: Beautiful design, convincing environments, and depth of play.
78
GameZone
This game will be worth revisiting in a year to see what progress has been made and how it has evolved.
77
IGN
The slower progression, group focus and huge world all set the game apart from the current MMO behemoth, World of Warcraft. Whether those differences are positive or negative is largely a matter of taste.
76
GamerNode
A game with a lot of potential, but isn't quite where it can be. With a team constantly working on improving the experience, though, things look bright for its future.
75
Game Informer
If a slower-paced, more complex title in the vein of EverQuest is what you’re looking for, Vanguard will serve you well. A lack of polish in several areas and strong competition keep this game from being particularly special, though.
75
GameSpot
Experienced role players will enjoy the engaging combat and fascinating diplomatic gameplay, in spite of Vanguard's litany of bugs and singular focus on group adventuring.
74
Cheat Code Central
With its faults, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes should be passed by on the shelf without even a second glance. With the immersive multiplayer gaming experience and its in-depth complexity, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes offers a challenge that any old-school player, or a newcomer to the genre, can't pass up.
74
Jolt Online Gaming UK
While we can’t look into the future to predict how Vanguard will turn out over the coming months, the early signs are promising that this could be more than just the real next generation of "Everquest."
72
AtomicGamer
Class balance is currently way off but is slowly being put back in line - this is mostly evident on the game's two Player vs. Player servers (one of them is a race-based team server, while the other is a free-for-all between any players).
70
AceGamez
Despite some bugs, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes still remains instantly accessible for those with some patience, and you will need a great deal of patience, because although WoW showed everyone how fun MMORPGs can be once you design them to be accessible to all, Vanguard is a game geared towards the hardcore players who crave more of a challenge.
70
Yahoo! Games
While free of crash bugs, problems in interface, gameplay, and content abound. But if you're an old-school player, or a WoW player who's ready to delve deeper into a more complex MMORPG, then Vanguard was made for you.
70
GameDaily
People willing to put in the effort will certainly be rewarded, since each level in every mode feels like a major accomplishment. Vanguard, with vast opportunities and size, requires time to grow on players. Patient gamers who enjoy tons of options will find many riches and glory here.
67
GameShark
There is clearly an audience for this sort game, and the base design certainly has its share of interesting (and fun) concepts, but it was clearly not ready for public consumption.
65
PALGN
Overall, Vanguard is promising. With some tweaking over its lifespan, it may be able to provide some fresh MMORPG action, with some elements new to the genre. However, currently many issues hold it back from being great.
63
Strategy Informer
Overall Vanguard isn't a bad game, but it doesn't really bring anything new to the table of the MMO industry.
60
EuroGamer
For now, Vanguard is a game which has plenty to offer a brave adventurer with a stunning PC. Aside from any design or content problems we've identified with the game, potential buyers need to be aware that they're entering a world which, as a prominent WOW character would have it, is not prepared.
60
GameSpy
There's potential for a very good game here, and we've had our share of both highs and lows with the gameplay, but the sheer number of gameplay bugs, graphical issues, and poor technical performance make it difficult to recommend in its current state.
60
G4 TV
The run-of-the-mill level grinding in Vanguard is no better or worse than any other MMO. It’s a little disappointing that we still have to deal with crap like this. But there are some neat ideas in Vanguard.
58
Game Revolution
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes might be a far better game in a few months time, but coming from the company that questionably destroyed one of its most popular MMOs ("Star Wars Galaxies"), nothing is guaranteed.

PC Zone UK
A hollow, mind-numbingly dull MMORPG grind that stretches the boundaries of good taste and sensible design decisions.

U.S. Pcgamer Magazine is the biggest pcgaming mag which I've been reading for a little over 13 years now, I still have issues from 1994 . I just double checked and seems I have Vol, 1 Issue 2 which was July 1994, so yeah, PcGamer is huge
Why did the review make an issue that when he killed a goat he got gloves from it? I mean, this happens in what, just about every mmo.
most modern games are doing away with that. I was surprised that Vanguard still had small animals with shields stuck up their rectums. In LoTRO for example mobs drop appropriate loot. Humanoids drop weapons armor and coin etc. Animals drop hides, teeth, claws, and meat. Some of the animal drops are rare and can be used in crafting exceptional grade weaposns and armor.

I'd lke to see looting animals made into a skill, like skinning. If you have it you loot it, if not you don't. But then, I also wish that VG had a complex ecosystem.
I do think that reviewers may be little harsher on VG then usual because of who Sigil is and the scope of the game. I don't blame them though. There is a lot of expectation for the game, and a lot of people aren't happy that it didn't meat thier expectations; wich has been coming across in most of the reviews.
I get the feeling that EVERYONE is looking for that MMO that will compete with WoW; more so industry people. It will be interesting to see what the reviews have to say about LoTRO. AoC is going to get good marks, but I think that game is more in line to challenge GW then be the hard hitter in the traditional MMO market.
I'm looking forward to April. It's just a shame thier isn't anything a little more mainstream hitting between LoTRO and AoC.

That would be because the review that was posted by the OP was from the British PC Gamer, which has a different set of reviewers. I believe they are more along the lines of a Sister Publication.

Tabula Rasa is releasing this 'fall', and might make it to the market before Age of Conan. It's a little under the radar right now, but it's closed beta is about to begin which should ramp up attention.
Tabula Rasa, of course, isn't another high-fantasy game. So there's the good and bad of that, but it'll be interesting to see how Garriott's project finally turns out and fits in with all the other big release this year.
