thoughts on gw2

here are my goods and bads on gw2

this is why gw 2 is not a good idea

you cant bring your gw1 chars over.  they are makin the lvl cap very high or none at all.  this pretty much makes the skill part of the game pointless since its now pretty much like every other mmo.  now its all about whos higher lvl and that determines the outcome of the battle.  this will bring in higher lvls killin low lvls for fun like in other mmo's.  'Click to move' will be abandoned in favor of a more freedom-rich control scheme, including 'jumping, swimming, and sliding.'  sounds cool huh?  well if you think about it its not.  the reason i like gw without these crap is because it was more realistic.  noone jumps around like rabbits in fights or swims like that in real life.  now its gonna have that stupid look just like in coh, cov, wow, and any other game which has you jump and stuff. now if they do a good job and make it realistic then i will be fine with it.  so far no mmo has made it realistic except the matrix online but that game sucks now.  the big problem i have is that the fee is undecided.  they say there wont be a monthly fee for now but its not official yet.  so if they add a monthly fee they pretty much destroy the uniqueness of gw.  lets pray they dont add one. also they said they are doin things different because they listen to everyone on the forums and stuff.  this is all good an all but what about the people who complain about spammin?  i read so many of them i cant believe they didnt do anything about it.  sure they added the search feature but its still goin on.  also they said people didnt finish a chapter before the new one came out.  so why dont they not buy it till they finish the old one? (yes double negative i know)  this is what makes gw unique you pay for what you want.

this is why its a good idea

4 new Playable races:

  • Sylvari
  • Asuras
  • Charr
  • Norn

Radical changes - overhauled environment and character control system, redefined PvP play and retooled NPC companion system.  Sidekicks simlar to CoH, allowing powers to seep from a high level character to a friendly lower level char.  No real world limitations to servers. You pick a 'world', but can switch between the realms.  PvP World vs World combat sounds to be a massive scale capture the flag (AB style?) with no minimum or maximum party size. Big-ass raids that can supposedly take place for weeks on end. At the end, the 'world' will be reset, and it will start again it seems. More a casual version of PvP where you can pop in and out to perform various smaller tasks. Developers will reshuffle the teams into well-balanced match-ups every week or so.  GvG will still be present, as a more balanced form where everyone is on a level playing field.  NPC like heros can join you (like a pet it sounds), and dont count towards your party. Every player can bring a single companion on his adventure and won't take up a slot.

i copied most of this off of a fansite.

so heres my thoughts on it.

generally i dont think this is a good idea.  sounds like the original gw way of makin a new chapter seems better.  if they do this it sounds like they are just gonna have this game as the last one.  if they make this the last one they pretty much have to make a monthly fee for thats the only way to make money.  sure they can make expansions every once in awhile but that wont make enough money to keep the servers up and runnin all the time.  i like the old way of makin chapters.  you get what you pay for.  you dont like one you dont have to get it.  id rather pay for what i want then to pay a monthly fee every month for updates that i might not use.  now if they do a good job with this new gw then i might change my mind.  if they greatly increase the graphics and make it official of not to have a monthly fee with improved pvp then i might like this.

I am happy, this is more like an mmo now with the great aspects of not having to grind much to be at your max power(hope it stays that way) and soon large scale pvp events and new races. Knew it was coming to it and I will buy the game and hopefully participate in the Beta.

I played GW for about ten minutes and told my friend he was insane.  I couldn't jump.  I am that picky.  If they put jumping into the game I might see if I can stand 30 minutes.
  • ASmith84ASmith84 Member Posts: 979

id rather have a fun game then a sucky game that you can jump in.  you gotta get over your pickyness otherwise your gonna be missin out on alot of stuff.  trust me take my friend for example.  he thought the warriors would suck cause of the bad graphics.  then he started to play it and he couldnt stop beating the hell out of people. i have more examples but i dont feel like typin them.  you cant really judge a game till you actually play it for some time.

Yeah this bugged me to, but finally in GW2 there will be swimming, sliding, and of course JUMPING!
  • guy121guy121 Member UncommonPosts: 6

So lets get this straight... Game will suck because:

    1) Can not bring over characters from first game

    2) Jumping is not realistic

    3) Higher levels will ruin the experience because the game will be based off of levels

    4) Might be a Monthly fee

Well lets see... GW2 is a completely different game, so why would you even want to bring over characters from the first game? It is not an expansion pack. Jumping during a fight is not realistic, but its a game. Do you really think magic, dragons, monsters are realistic? I mean I think GW sucks because you have to run everywhere and there aren't any cars. So unrealistic! GW & GW2 are not pure PVP games like UO used to be. You PVP when you want to and I'm sure the system will be setup to have players of similar levels fighting each other. If it requires a monthly fee to have a world without instances then so be it. If they do charge a monthly fee and you wanted to continue to play games for free then stick with the original GW. No one is forcing you to buy the game. They are not charging you to download a simple patch. They will most likely be charging you for the load that is placed on their servers if they remove instanced play.

You state to the poster before you that he should be less picky. Well what do you call someone who dislikes a game because you have the ability to jump during a fight? Then you state that you can't judge a game till you play it for some time. Well tell me, have you played GW2 for some time?

Just reread the first post and I have to correct you, If you have read the article in the magazine or go here : http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10133090 you would know they continue to re-assure the players of guildwars that it will stay with no monthly fee's and they said this many times because the game would seem to need monthly fees to run this way but they are set on not having fees. About the levels we do not know yet and they probably have not yet decided whether they will make these levels count or just be an accessory and give you skill points after 20.

Now you have to understand also that they are making Guild Wars 2 because many of the changes and new things players have been asking for are unable to be implemented on the current engine so this was bound to happen. I am happy that it happened sooner rather then later when GW has no more players and everyone remembers it as a let down because they dev's failed to implement what they asked for.

To the OP. I believe the higher lvl cap or no level cap refers to roleplaying characters not PvP characters. It wouldnt make sense as this is one of the main reason for creating Guild Wars. This was mentioned somewhere by Gaile in another forum.

Is it just me or does GW have a successful and unique game?  Why reinvent the wheel to be more similar to it's competator, it is the points of difference in GW that keeps me and others playing.
  • v3rtv3rt Member Posts: 19
read my other post. It's because of that and the fact that  with the current guild wars they keep having to recreate the game with each new campaign. It started becoming a bore  and the replayability was low. It was bound to happen anyways as I said before.

Go back to your WoW account and jump. Don't try skillbased games that req skills to be good at, and not hours spent on..

Wow after reading all of this I just have to say....I don't really think that any of you have played the game before.

I played Guild Wars for a full 2-3 years before I quit which was after GW: Factions. The gameplay is one of the best I have seen in a while, no matter what any of you say. You really can't compare other MMO's to it because they are all the same. There is little to no grinding whatsoever in the game and the missions and quests keep you busy enough that you won't even notice that you are leveling up. The community is really nice and people are willing to help you out when they can, so don't even come in here and say that "omg I was in the game for about an hour and noone would help me and they all just called me a noob" because I will call you a liar. The only thing that turned me off was the release of Factions. Reason being was that the end game just didn't satisfy me enough. Needless to say I will be buying Nightfall here soon. As for the level cap....they have stated plenty of times that they will never raise the level cap because once you reach level 20 you up to par with everyone else. This is not a game that's all about who has the best weapons and armor, or who's the highest level, it's about skills and if you have them then can you use them? This is a very addicting game and I hope to see ArenaNet and NCSoft team up again for another great game. Btw there are no new races just classes, the only race that will ever be playable is human.

Wait till you see my signature move :)

Did you read any of the other posts in this thread?

Also, talking about liars, if you played for 2-3 years and quit when Factions came out lemme just give you a heads up that factions came out  a year after Prophecies and then Nightfall 6 months after that. I really think you have no clue about what we are talking about so I won't embarrase you but do yourself a favor and try to find out what the threads about before you go posting. kthanx

And as you say, GW got good pvp, like the system =) got to rank 8, really wanted the tiger but never got there :/

let me clarify what i meant about the jumping.  when i said realistic i meant to make it to where i would think it was real.  sure there arnt any dragons or w/e in real life but i want it to make me feel like there are.  this is what i meant about jumping.  its nice to jump around sometimes but in fighting it just looks stupid.  unless theres a kung fu style called rabbit that makes you jump around like a retard or somthin like that there is noone who fights like that in real life.  take the wow rogue for example.  the good ones usually jump around you and stab you and stuff.  now maybe its just me but that looks really stupid. its like watchin a bunny rabbit circling and hoppin around you.  now if they make it to where you sidestep and roll or somthin like that it might be more realistic.  thats what i want to see in a game.  to sidestep and to do action rolls or somthin instead of jumping like rabbits.  that would be more realistic and really cool.  the matrix had a good idea to where they do flips in the air when they jump.  they cant jump around in fighting though and i liked that.  too bad the game sucks.
  • v3rtv3rt Member Posts: 19
I agree, maybe put in a system that blocks out the ability to keep jumping like make it energy based or something, or just disable it all together while engaged in a fight or x seconds after a fight.
  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613
gah taking out the two best things in guildwars; no jumping, and heavily instanced.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Just cause they implement higher lvls means high lvls can gank low lvls? They didn't even talk much about open pvp.

You seem to assume ALOT... and you seem to base your thoughts off shit games like WOW or vanguard maybe that have shit implementations.

You can have full world pvp and still have "brackets" to fight in... just look at that game everyone makes fun of "runescape classic". in runescape classic you could only attack people 4 above and 4 below you.

Eventually everyone had a high lvl main (50-60). A newbie to fight other newbs in the cabbge patch (3-10) and possible a lvl 20ish guy. Everyone knew everyone else who was around their lvl and clans were formed with max and min lvl req. I considered this the best system ive seen so far... unfortunately its no longer like this in runescape they have a new system now.

What im trying to say is that anything can work as long as its implemented properly. Just cause you can now jump doesn't mean its going to be like WOW where u can jump over peoples heads and avoid getting hit.

Limitless or high capped level would be great, I mean on my RP Warrior I have leveled up god knows how many extra times and I really have nothing to show apart from the fact I have a hell of a lot of skills, so I sorta see something like, you will only get attribute points until level x but you will keep leveling but not get attribute points.

Umm, also if you read the big long article on guildwarsguru or wherever it was, arenanet still hates the idea of people killing creatures you could, and as such from what I have read the areas with a higher amount of people present have... common goals? as such...

As in, one of the examples was a dragon... if you kill it... thats great, but if you dont kill it... thats great I cant remember exactly but it would appear these uninstanced zones are more or less places where you fight real big guys, and do quests aswell but not much information as of yet so hard to reach conclusions.

Umm, on the topic of character transfer, which is just not there... I have decided that, with the money people have now on the current series should be put towards getting these new, "family history" benefits that will come out in Eye of the North.. since items/money/experience cant be transfered, you may aswell sell out all your stuff and work towards these titles that will boost your GW2 characters.

Jumping doesnt really need to be implemented as such... but now that they are opening up the movement maybe with the addition of jumping and other forms of free movement (such as sliding) will get rid of the dreaded invisible barriers -_- and save long runs around short cliffs.

The new races are awesome, or atleast the ones we have seen but either way I cant help but think the really small race will have an advantage against dodging spells -_-;; although i'm sure they wont since everyone will move at the same speed (racially ie; not under the effect of skills)

Anyway, thats enough talking for now... I better start on my homework.

No one knows what the game will be like.

Everyone says that the game will be based off levels. A higher level cap doesn't mean this. Maybe once you reach level 20 your character will be capped at its maximum power level but levels after will be a measure of experience. That will be a good way of measuring someone's experience with the game.

We can only wait and see what happens. I think its going to rock

I wish they would keep releasing campaigns for the first game instead of doing this.

Its already very obvious that GW2 is going to be a very very different game than GW1, with a different target audience.  Some of GW1's audience just liked it because it didnt have monthly fees though, so those people will happily change to GW2.  Me on the other hand...  Well... I think I might have fallen out of Anets sights now .  I'm not really angry at them or anything, its probably the smartest thing to do for them now, but I am still sad about it.

I simply dont understand why people are interested in having weirdo humaniod races.  have you guys seen these Asuras things yet?  They look like a mix between gollum from the LOTR movies and dobby from the Harry Potter movies.  Then there are the Charr, who are a cool enemy in GW1, but GW2 is probably going to make them into WoW tauren counterparts no doubt.  Well, I guess GW2 will need multiple races if its going up against traditional linear mmorpgs like WoW and EQ2, but its still dissappointing.

The high level cap...  Well, that is obviously going very much in the opposite direction of GW1's low level cap.    How high one wants a level cap to be certainly varies from person to person depending on a number of personal preferences...  I for one cant stand level grinds or level based combat.  They havent exactly said that the game will have level based or item based combat yet, so I am not giving up on that yet.  GW2 could even still have a PvP character thing like GW1 does, along with arenas and all, but I dont really think they will.

All in all, I think Anet is hoping to take a big fat bite out of Blizzards huge casual gamer population.  I wish them luck!

I played GW : prophecies for a while and realy enjoyed the story feeling with cutscenes etc. The only thing that bothered me was the PvP that was dominated by high ranked players, and if you were good or not you just could not enter a good guild or PvP team for the hall of heroes.

Yes sometimes heroes ascent has a bit of an elitist feel around it.  It can take a while before finding a handy contact or a good guild that will get you into the well organized groups that can get some major fame.  The ironic part is, once you are rank 3 and able to get into decent heroes ascent PUGs you probably already have found a good guild or at least enough pvp contacts/friends to not need PUGs anymore.    It can be frustrating though

Hmm how will gw2 make money, that is the question. If it's not going to have a subscription fee model then that must mean lots of expansions or an item shop. I'm sure it would be better following their income difficulties with GW that they just opt for a subscription model, maybe making it cheaper than other mmorpgs or something.

i got a few things to say

for the lvl based stuff. lets say you can go to lvl 300.  now tell me what you have accomplished to reach this lvl.  you spent lots of time fighting monsters and stuff to get their right?  does this show you are better than other people?  lets say a new guy makes a pvp only char and beats you in pvp.  what now?  do you suck now cause someone who just made a pvp only guy beat you, someone who spent alot of time to get to lvl 300?  levels dont mean anything but time spent on a game in my opinion.  so to have levels is really pointless.  thats why i liked guildwars cause it only goes to lvl 20 and it was easy to get there.  plus it makes you spend more time listening to the storyline and doin missions and stuff instead of worryin to level up to catch up to your buddies.

for the monthly fee.  some of you are a little confused about what i said about this.  my point was that i dont like monthly fees and i hope that gw2 doesnt have one.  it might have one though and i wouldnt like that.  that was my whole point.  to go deeper into this i will tell you why i feel this way.  monthly fees are pretty much made so that they can put stuff into the game all the time.  now thats cool and all but what if you dont necessarily use all the updates and stuff they put into it?  your payin for stuff you dont even use.  this is why i like gw.  you pay for what you want.  if you dont like one chapter you dont have to get it.  dont like assassins?  dont get factions.  see this is what i meant for getting what you pay for.

now for the characters not bein able to go to gw2.  sure its a new game but why not?  i worked hard on my characters why not let me bring them over?  or maybe not bring them over but copy them so you can start with the stuff you had from the first game.  just a thought.

now to clear things up i am not picky or anything like that.  i am merely just expressing my thoughts and opinions about this.  if gw2 is a really good game but not have the stuff i suggested or want thats fine i will still play it.  im sure everyone has stuff they dont like about games they play alot.  but you play it cause its alot of fun and you can look past the stuff you dont like. same with me.
