worth buying or not ?

I am wandering if this game is realy worth buying ,with the fact that SOE has it's hands in it (more or less) and alot of negative posts it makes me wander if it is worth it to buy it without playing some sort of trial first.Soo im asking the people that curently play the game to tell me how buggy and unfinished or how great the game is...since I cant form a oppinion of my own because no one seems to want to share a buddy key with me.

I would say dont bother. I tried it and I hated it but there are some people who say they like it so maybe you will. I have a buddy key with my game still I wouldn't wanna inflict it on any of my friends.. yours if you want it :-)

I'd have to agree its not worth buying. I played it but will not be resubscribing. Every week they nerf something and then evidently overpower something else to try and make up for it. They do not seem to know which way they want to go. The game is still very much in beta with bugs, rebalancing, poor optimazation for most systems, and lack of content in the upper levels. IMO needs several more months worth of work before its more fun then frustration but YMMV.

Overall I figure in a few months there will be much better (more polished, and finished that will actually play on a average system) MMORPG's out , I have all the suggested (not minimal) system requirements and still really can't play unless all graphics are set to their lowest, and at that level VG does not shine at all. ( nor does it come through on its promises of a seemless world they just renamed seems to chunks. )

      Good luck

You will not find very positive posts about Vanguard here.  It seems to me that frequent posters of this forum hate it and do everything in their power to discourage people from buying Vanguard.   I still have not figured out what the negativism agenda is.

I play Vanguard and for what its worth here can tell you that it is a great game.  It runs smoothly if you have the recommended hardware and ram.   The community, at least in my server, is great .   In my opinion, Sigil has taken the best features of past mmorpgs and incorporated them into a beautifully rendered world.   The world itself is huge.  I have been playing since day 1 and I still have not been everywhere there is to go.   The game has something for everyone.  If you like to adventure, the quests are very well thought out and hunting is great.  If you are a crafter like me, I can tell you that the world is a crafter's heaven.  And crafters make everything in the game.  Yes there are very good drops in dungeons but player made armor and weapons are just as good and sometimes even better than drops.  Its a player driven economy with specialists making everything from storage bags to houses and ships.  If you like to try something different there is diplomacy, which is unique to Vanguard and I must say another very interesting path to follow.  Everyone dabbles in diplomacy and there are a lot of rewards associated with it.

In summary, adventuring is fun with lots of mobs to hunt, great dungeons and nice drops.  Crafting is unbelievably excellent and rewarding.  Harvesting is excellent and designed in such a way as to avoid campers for resource spots a la Ultima Online.  Diplomacy is a world of its own and the rewards are fun.  You can spend days just doing that.  I am level 21 now.  I could be a lot higher but there is so much to do and not enough time so most people are not in a rush to level because there is a lot to keep you occupied besides the leveling grind.  The housing aspect is incredibly exciting, since you dont just buy a plot and put a house in it.   You buy it and then you have to find player contractors to build it for you.  Bargaining for the best deal is a lot of fun.

Take it from a satisfied subscriber.  Buy it and try it out, you wont regret it and if you want to know the real truth about Vanguard, dont look for it in these forums.  Go to the sites the players post in and find out the true positives and negatives from people who know.

    Good luck to you.

Hell no. Save your money and or you'll regret. If you're really want to play, wait a year or you'll most likely be disappointed. It's the honest truth.

Hmmm, buddy keys you say...? What are these buddy keys exactly? Oh, and give me one
  • whitedelightwhitedelight Member Posts: 1,544

Ignore what everyone else is saying and try to get a trial key. It is the best way to see for yourself. You may enjoy something somebody else hates. It is annoying to see poitive and negative posts with no information backing them up. Posts that just claim a game sucks for instance. You have no idea how the poster himself will feel about playing it unless you are them.

Like I said, get a trial key from somebody and try it for 10 days. If you like it then you buy it, if not then you move on.

I bought it a few days ago and I regret it. The game is not finished. In the game notes you see stuff like "Added tool tip for so and so ability". Its like what the heck dint you test this game before release??

Anyway, in short the game has good ideas and concepts but its not finished. The graphics are too demanding even on a good pc. Lag is pretty noticable. PLUS, the in game animations are rotten and unfinished. Mobs move as if they are hovering... the game is really in a bad position. I read somewhere brad was saying or some genius from sigil was saying the game needs 1 year and it will be good to go. Well WHY DINT YOU WAIT 1 YEAR BEFORE RELEASING IT THEN?? ...morons.

Anyway by then Warhammer will be out. And that game, regardless of the "looks like wow" thing people say... if you like pvp thats the game to play. I spent over an hour watching myspace videos of that game and I cant wait. This game has no chance.

SOE doesnt realise that the market isnt what it use to be. Since WoW it became fast food industry. People want it right away... if you dont have it they will go elsewhere and find it. The days of EQ1 are long gone where promisses where made years before they came into existance and people waited.

But SOE deserves to go bankrupt, so who cares. This game is a step in the right direction for SOE.... BANKRUPTCY!!!!

lol, stay away for now atleast OR dont listen, do like me, buy it and same day cancel your sub.

See, you didn't take time to research the game before you bought it otherwise you would know most of your questions. The reason that tooltips were added and they did not wait a year to release it, is because they ran out of funding during the beta and SOE told Sigil to put it out on the market. They announced it on a couple of sites. Like a couple of us said, get a TRIAL KEY, do not purchase it outright. You may or may not enjoy it, but you have to try it for yourself.

Woah back to blaming the customer that debate is in other threads i'm sure you can find those. You yourself have just outlined an important reason to avoid this game, "they ran out of funding during the beta and SOE told Sigil to put it out on the market". It was a sinking ship before release. I just wish I knew that before I bought it. Anyway i'm gonna send him my unused buddy key in a pm. Will be interesting to see what he thinks if he remembers this thread.

I liked it. ^^ Just my computer sucked too much. Make sure your computer meets the recommended requirements or else you're goosed and you'll tear your hair out trying to optimise the graphics.
  • whitedelightwhitedelight Member Posts: 1,544
I am not blaming people for saying the game sucks, but he asked something that is widely known by now, the game was released in a beta state. He called them morons for it , yet he did no research on it. Thought it was funny. I did not tell this user to buy the game, I actually post valid information when I post. I did not say do nor do not buy this game , I simply stated your view changes from user to user, and you have to test it yourself.

The only way to really come to any conclusions about Vanguard is via a buddy key for the 10 day free trial.

Personally, I think the game has a long way to go before it will catch up to what it should have been at launch. The shell IS there for a great game, but the execution was lousy/. However, that's my opinion, based on my experiences in a trial. Your mileage may vary.

I will say this-- don't buy it until AFTER you try it in a free trial. Give it a test run first.
  • MarkajMarkaj Member Posts: 165

I highly recommend that you get a buddy key or wait for trial version. Only buy it if you don't care about losing money and time. You asked an honest question and my honest answer is, "no it is not worth buying"... yet.

Avoid viral marketing posts like Rheanon's. Either the game he is playing is "not" Vanguard or he is a purposefully deployed viral agent. Because, I have not seen any post with facts so warped and spinned like that one.

The matter of fact is the game is pretty much unfinished with serious performance issues, bugs, glitches, broken content. Even the lead dev has confessed several times that the game is yet in a beta status and he publicly apoligized the gaming community. It is true that the game has potential but it will take a long time until that potential materializes.

So pointing out facts is a negative agenda now? I said I agreed with the OP I tried it I spent money on it I didn't like it but I did say his MMV. I have the recommened system reqs and yes it does play semi smoothly on the lowest graphics setting. I fi want better I have to turn off sound or avoid towns etc.  Are you saying all players with the reccomended systems will be able to play smoothly on balanced with sound on. You see you say things but don't quantify so in sort you would be the one lying here.

Summary the game is fun for you, you think the dungeons are fun its subjective I already posted in another thread to you how they nerfed weaponsmiths in the last few patches to make it so weaponsmiths can not compete any longer to mob dropped weapons  of same rarity. But Whee what the hay I can still make horseshoes and harvesting tools to sell!

In my experience many players are in a rush and grind with the double exp weekends most of the players in my guild are now above lvl 30 and it is a casual guild. As long as you have a competent group you will level, Solo alot and you will be grinding till your eyes bleed  different strokes for different folks.

In the end don't buy the Fanbois advice. Note he/she does not advise you to try it first with a buddy key they tell you to buy it without trying it why is that?  Once again I'll stat VG does have some good parts to really enjoy it in my personal experience you will need a system MUCH higher then the system reqs on the box and even then may require alot of tweaking. The Game is Still very much in beta though and will be for along time. I will agree they are making great improvements but for eveyone they make they also frequently seem to break something or then change their minds. Patches are not well tested and frequently seem not well thought out though that is just IMO I'll point out.

      Cheers

beware the trolls but don't buy everything the fanbois say don't buy it till you try it., anyone telling you different is just trying to scam you

We have advised this person to get a trial key first before making a decision on the game and one has been sent to him/her. Let it go.

Yup, and people also blame the employees of Enron for not reseaching before they invested and lost their retirement nest egg. There are always people out there that will blame the victim. I'm sure Skilling, Lay, and Fastow were sorry for what happened, and provided all sorts of excuses to the investigators that it just wasn't their fault.  Maybe Enron was just a company ahead of the technology too. Just like Kmart and Global Crossings management were ahead of their time. Or maybe we should blame the investors in Vanguard for being at fault.

Anyone but the management team is always at fault. The management team always seems to get a bonus as recognition for performance, while the little guy gets a pink slip.

If you have a system that can run it, I'd say its worth it for now.  I am bit concerned Sigil is selling out the vision to attract more users (ie make experience easier to get.)

There's alot of classes and alot of areas to start out, so my advice would be to try a few as they really do vary quite a bit, I particularly liked the Kurashasa and Kojani  starter questlines, there's real variety in VG for a few examples:

Dark elf -  your first quest is to slaughter some members of your own race to prove your better genes basically, D Elf diplomacy is all about arranging for others to be assinated/discredited etc in order to advance yourself.

Contrast that with halflings where you're basically helpful and nice, if motivated more by pie than most, even down to rescuing a lost kitten

Gnome diplomacy is all about joining their secret police so you can witch-hunt any potential traitors to gnome racial superiority amongst your ranks etc etc - anyway you can check it out for yourself.

Paying to beta test, is what we are doing. Day 3 and Ive already filled 4 bug reports. In 5 years of MMO gaming, I filled my first 4 bug reports this week.

Feels good to beta test.... or is this alpha? I missed the memo....

This, of course, is the last defense of the braindead Vanbois club.

"You don't like to randomly lose levels?  Go back to WoW nub!"

"You don't like to randomly die when crossing a zone line?  Go back to WoW nub!"

"You don't like boring, uninspired combat?  Go back to WoW nub!"

"You want decent content and interesting encounters?  Go back to WoW nub!"

"If you're such a wuss you want a fun, polished, finished game.. go back to WoW nub!"

Really, now, for those of you wondering whether to buy, ignore all the fanbois and haters and go to the post "Brad's latest post", by Teala. Brad McQuade is the lead developer of the game. Read it. Does this sound to you like a game you would like to purchase?
