Hi all,
I'm a 20 something college student who's looking for an mmorpg to play, I've been around the block. I've played everything as old as EQ to everything as new as V:SOH. Just wondering if you fine folks could give me some pointers. I'm looking for a game that can hold my interest, can keep me entertained for the longeset possible period of time, and has a good learning curve. I've strayed away fro WoW before, but it looks like that may be where I have to end up, because everyone's there. Please note the only reasons I've strayed before have been kind of stupid (i.e. cartoony graphics, sometimes overly comical looking characters). Is there anything you folks can suggest to me. Thanks I appreciate it.

But if you want a Serious MMO then WoW is not for you, WoW is game and does not pretent to be a another world where your alta-ego can live, its full of humor and real live references so immerision is hard, if you want a fun game then WoW is great, want a serious game where you can RP then look at EQ/VG/LOTRO.
That said its hella fun, the best raid experience of any MMO (IMHO), servers are always full, good class balanace, large world, too many quests to complete them all, fast resonsive fighting and PvP.
Deispite what some say you wont max cap in 2 weeks, its not full of kids, its not easy mode, its not ugly and its not a cheese burger or a britney spears song.
But as I said its not for all so give a whirl.
The game is fun at levels 1-69. There's plenty to do. You will rush to 40 so you can ride your mount. After 40 things slow down and you start to feel the sting of boredom. You now rush to 58 to participate in the outlands, which is the best part of World of Warcraft ( if you plan on playing the game - BUY the expansion or miss out on everything ).
You'll spend the last part of your life there, doing quests like you have before - Go to point A talk to <insert name>, return to point B, talk to <insert name2> and kill 20 fel orc peons and collect their blood.
Once you get to 70, you will find yourself grinding. And I don't mean this lightly. When I say grinding, I mean *grinding*. You will have to grind for everything. From reputation, keys needed to participate in dungeons, cash for your flying epic mount, Motes to make your items, and materials to make consumables for raids.
You will spend 85% of your time at 70 grinding materials so you can compete in the end game.
the other 15% will be spent either 1.) looking for groups for places like Shadow labs, Black Morass, etc. Or raiding places like Karahzan to collect sub-par loot that is in a lot of ways worse than what you can get from other places.
Level 70 is completely different. Unlike 1-69, you will *need* a strong guild to participate in the game at this point. Without it you are running around grinding as you wait for a Pick up group to appear, or standing around Shattrath picking your nose, or watching TV as you spam the /trade channel for a group, or use the /who feature to ask people separately if they are interested in a group, all while waiting patiently for a group to ask you to join from the Looking for group tool, which is unreliable because a lot of people refuse to use it or just simply do not know how.
-------
PvP at lower levels is a twink fest ( twink is a character funded by higher level characters who spend money to give their lower level character insane equipment and enchants which makes them nay impossible to beat by the common player ).
You may find yourself being frustrated by the complaints, insults, and overall bad attitude by the players in your group, or you may not be finding yourself PvPing at all, because you realize that the game is completely messed up due to the population imbalances ( in some cases, alliance outnumber the horde 4 to 1!!!! )
Be careful if you join a PvP server. You will find yourself killed over and over while someone you have never met before who is 50 levels higher than you. Once he kills you he then camps your rotting corpse for hours until you frustratingly give up and log. If you are upset about this. Tough break, it *is* a PvP server, right? "L2p noob"; an all too common phrase on the forums if you were to complain about this.
Which is another thing. Never read the forums. They're full of nonsense and ignorance and simply thinking about reading them could cause you to go into a coma.
Posts like "etc is overpowered" and "Guys are gay if they play female characters" or "Blizzard is stupid and needs to nerf rogues" fill the boards.
If you want an easy game that literally requires no thought to it, but a few button presses. A game that has the easiest learning curve of any game I have ever played, then WoW is for you.
I don't know what the allure of WoW is, but once you start playing you just can't stop. Its a drug that consumes your soul. Deep down you wonder why you like the game, but no matter what you just can't stop playing. It's like smoking. You know deep down you're killing yourself, but try as you must, you can't stop.
Hope that helps some.
Perfect example of someone who has not and probably will never actually play the game, and just bashes it because he fails to realize that all of the people who aren't "PWNZORZ LOLOL"-ing all the time are actually PLAYING the game, and not just bragging about it on some forum.
WoW is good, and 8+ million other people also think so.
EDIT: I'd also like to add that if you're still interested in playing, roll on Dark Iron and contact me in-game. I'll let my guild know you're there and I'm sure they'll have no problems inviting you.
I still play the game and I don't brag for crap on the forums.
I still play the game and I don't brag for crap on the forums.
Right, okay.
"I'm teh uber roxxorz and I have teh leet 70s but this game SUX and I HATE IT!!1!"
You're bashing AND bragging, at the same time.
BRILLIANT!
the OP couldnt be more specific and yet, people try to "recruit him" - or am i completely wrong? :P
facts from what i read:
- hes a MMO veteran
- he dislike the graphics of the game
- hes looking for something with a learning curve.. what is that?! zomg!
basically, i wouldnt recommend you(to the OP)to start playing the game.
and my experince - i did play it for 1.5 year as a paladin - would be everything you got, is the complete opposite of what you can "get" from wow.
Bashing the game? I have not bashed the game. I have played WoW for over 2 years now. My account is still active since Feburary 2005. I have almost 5 level 70 characters and I can say from experience that you are full of crap if you think I do not know how to play the game.

Dude, you sound like an idiot. If you're going to make an argument about someone's comment at least do it in an intellectual way, not just getting on and making up stuff that the guy said. Not once in his original post did he brag about his character. Also, he never tried to belittle anyone who plays the game. In fact he threw himself into that group of people when he said he's addicted. The only reason he even posted that he had lvl 70s was because you said that he didn't play the game and just because he said he had lvl 70's does not constitute bragging about how amazing he is. He might very well have 5 lvl 70s. All that does is make him a credible source. Next time when you decide to bash someone for there views try not to let your bias' get in the way. It's very obvious you're a WoW fanboy. Which I don't have a problem with as long as you argue for WoW in an inteligible way.-Benhamine

Absolutely, and mentioning that he has 5 level 70 characters (as if that actually MEANS anything) was just to throw that out there? I've been playing since the game came out as well, and I don't have 5 level 70s, but that doesn't mean I've played any less or that I'm not as good at the game.
He threw any ground he had away with his argument the moment he said "this game takes NO SKILL." And he DID say that. Don't go around throwing out the "WoW fanboy" tag on anyone who says something you're offended by.

I know people that have multiple 70's and it is possible. I play WoW as well. All I was saying was that your arguments were founded on Bias'. Just because he said "something you're offended by" like "this game takes NO SKILL" doesn't mean that you have the right to pretend that he was trying to say that he's better than you. He wasn't. His intention was not to make you feel bad because you don't have 5 70's...and he didn't say he had 5 70's he said "I have almost 5 level 70 characters." For all we know this could mean that he has a 68, 2 70's, and a couple of 69's. There are people out there that had 6 or 7 lvl 60's when TBC launched, and with the amount of time it takes to lvl in Outlands 5 lvl 70's is not completely unreasonable.Basically all I was trying to say was that if you want to argue his points, give points of your own. Don't just blurt out that he said "I'm teh uber roxxorz and I have teh leet 70s but this game SUX and I HATE IT!!1!" when he most certainly did not. If you present your arguments in a more inteligible way and not like a 5th grader a lot more people will listen.

Fishing post, or smells like it. but i will bite as i see nothing else in the forums to respond to.
wow is a very easy mmo, one of its huge draws. it requires no skill, no knowledge, no need to understand or know the lore of warcraft. you will find if you like itemization, this is def the game for you, no matter how many "leet posters" on the wow boards say this skill doesnt seperate the people, items do, there is no skill, only memorizing. if your into third party programs and macros your dreams have been answered. its rumored some folks have up to 60 actions hotkeyed and memorized and are terrors in pvp, if you call that skill, most call it something else. a bit on pvp, others will argue that huge amounts of skill are needed to play wow pvp, that knowing your opponent will give you the edge, not so, its also easy here, rock, paper, scissors, it takes only a brutally short time to realize macro'd characters rule pvp, itemization will make some that raid and get t-5 gear and weps nearly unbeatable, even if they suck at the game, which most do. you will find you can easily kill the counter to your "rock, paper, scissor" themed toon unless they are an afor mentioned itemized toon and you are suckin at raiding for the uber loot, also pvp gear is garbage (my opinion)
you like everquest? you like the french? swell, another plus for you. wow is owned by a french company, based in france. wow lost its entire original dev team due to the lack of communication with these french, them basically not giving a rats anus about keeping wow pure to its lore, so they hired devs from the other game they also own( thats right kiddies), everquest. you will find raiding in wow as robust if not totally identical to everquest, so again, you will feel right at home. characters, no not the loudmouthed subscribers that need to let folks know they are uber, but the classes, some really suck, some are incedibly powerful, some do not follow the rock, paper, scissors theme, breaking this part of the game, et tu everquest? (my opinion)
customer service. what can we say about patronizing, condesending, no knowledge wow gm's? not much, they simply suck, they are brainless, they fail to answer questions, talk down to folks, and generally are simply a vent tool used by pissed of ticket holders. wow gm's serve no purpose but to stroke players and reset simple quests.
if this is for you go for it. but then warhammer or any of 4 or 5 mmo's are coming out soon.
i play wow till something comes out that will get my interest, why? wow is like the wife you have that you despise, the only reason you stick it out is for the kids, once they hit 18 however, your gone.
can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.

But you see, the game DOESNT take any skill, and i've played since beta since we're all measuring our e-peens. This aside, i dont care how many 70s you have or what you've accomplished and saying that you throw away credibility by saying that the game requires no skill is a falicy.
The game doesnt require any skill what-so-ever. As long as you can sit in a chair and run around in WoW for 4-6 hour a day for 2 weeks you can get from 1-70 without a problem. Please, for the love of whatever god you may worship, will you tell me where the skill is in that?
People don't seem to understand that the reason this game has done so well is because they've made it a mindless grind where people feel like they're accomplishing something, and the end game... omg blizzard DID hit the jackpot with how they did things, but it comes down to peoples greed, people to say "my gear is more l33t then yours". Thats why the game is SO reliant on gear and why people spend HOURS in dungeons toiling away to get the DKP in order to out-bid other people for items that without, you have no chance of competeing with.
As i've stated in some of my other post, you could (prior to tbe BC) get mods that would pratically play the game for you!
So please, pretty please, explain to me why when someone says that this game takes no skill to play that it throws their credibility as a gamer and MMO player out the window. I would be really interested in knowing.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
*points around the thread* And here you see the famous "wow community" and their natural behaviour. You asked a simple question... and get a few pages of abuse and complete nonsense between a few strangers comparing epeens.
If you want to know how it will be in WoW, and what kind of players there is.. Just read this thread. Answers all questions Have fun! Now, if you turn off general chat... heck, turn off chat completly, just watch combat statistics, then solo all the time.. then WoW is a great game! Have fun now, OP
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
Ok guys. Some have seem to get slightly off topic, the question was if he should buy the game or not.
Anyways I would say that this game is really worth to try. I've played it since the start and always thought it very entertaining. When ur exping ur character up from 1-69 u will have usually enjoy doing the quests and playing instances. Especially since you have never seen the stuff before. Remeber to act pro and not act like a idiot or u will be blacklisted by whole server.
Once you hit 70 u will soon find out that u sure must farm alot for some things, but it's also very entertaining. You will probably join a nice guild to start raiding and enjoying the lvl 70 content. The instances are mostly very nicely done and requires your guild to cooperate. The most guilds have a nice friendly community, which is needed when u raid.
But if raiding isn't ur way to go u can also PvP. PvP in WoW is ofc not the main focus of the game, but it's very nice if u ask me.
I say that the game is clearly worth a try. It's one of the biggest game out at the market and if u have such a big playerbase there is bound to be some flamers who hate the game.
Also a little sidenote; there are alot of people who will always keep on insisting that this game has the worst community ever and that it's so terrible that it's not true. These guys are the true flamers and are usually very few. I've played since the start of the game and I've played alot of different characters and met many different guys in the game. Sure, there are a few who are true jerks, but usually the most players are really nice and helpful.
Look, I'm not here to flame anyone and it's pretty clear you are here to pick a fight. I just thought it was amusing that here you are shouting to the world about how awful this game is, and then you're all defensive about how leet you are. If you hate the game, why did you play it for so long?
Stop being a tool and just leave, if it really offends you so much.

I'm not here to pick a fight, I'm just here trying to have an intelectual debate and its really quite hard to when their are people like you telling others they lose all credibility when they claim a game takes no skill. If someone is able to explain why this game takes thought and skill to play I'd be all open for a debate about it, but until then please stop posting for the sake of trying to take credibility away from others.

I am going to agree that the skill level in World of Warcraft is rather lacking. You will find that unless you plan on playing into the higher raiding levels you will be soloing for the most part until your mid to high 50s (with of course the exception of Dungeons and the possible exception of "elite' group based quests depending on your level and class) It has just received its first expansion which costs up to if not more than double the cost of the original game and lacks the new content it should have for having taken over 2 years to develop. It also adds two new races and flip-flops 2 of the classes (Shamans and Paladins) so now both sides can use these classes.
You will also find that the servers are filled with "gold sellers" who spam the channels in an almost constant flow of how their prices are the lowest and a link of the site to visit (these gold sellers are supposedly banned from the server, but their IPs are never blocked and nothing is done about the illegal sale of gold per the EULA.
The in game support is lacking to an almost shameful level, you will on occasion send in a report or ask for help from a GM who will most likely not respond to you in the time you are online, and when they do it will be the usual MMORP GM responce of "we are sorry but unless we see it there is nothing we can do"
If you do play on a PvP server you will find that they are now riddled with people who have found ways to exploit and or cheat in the battleground i.e. "speedhackers" and people who have found a way to reset their abilities consistently without the use of special abilities or Talents.
Aside from these and other issues that may or may not be usual MMORPG issues, this game can be fun for a while, but you will find the all too familiar repetative feel that makes your eyes sting and your bed seem more and more desirable.
If you are looking for a game that will keep you interested for a long period of time, this game could be for you, and yes i do suggest you try the free trial.
On a final note, if and when you try this game, if you have any desire to not see more bitching, whining, crying and generally people making complete asses of themselves stay away from the zone called the Barrens...and for some reason people think Chuck Norris jokes are funny and can't seem to let them drop...ever...

No MMO needs skill SHOCKING!, they are all Select target > spam appropriate hotkeys, the only different between a good player and a bad player is how and when they use those hotkeys. Now I guess that could be classed as skill in that your anticipating what the opponent is goona do and you have a counter ready to go as well as an attack. This is true in WoW, a hunter comes up against a mage, wether you wanna admit it or not it take knowledge of the mages attacks and a plan of action, is the mage gona blink to me and frost nova? is he goona pop a shield and try and pom?pyro me? how much mana does the mage have, do i play dumb and let him burn up him mana on me then jump him? and so it goes on. There is no "kill mage" hot key.
As to gear yes its very important but a mage in T5 and no mana is as week as a lvl 1 critter, thats what I would do to defeat a mage who had superior armour to me (hunter), kite him and viper to take his mana, when hes low ill go in for the kill. A clever mage will stop the attack a dumb mage wont.. takes all sorts.
I don't see "I got that many lvl 70s" as bragging.. I see it as telling the world "I got no life and i will never get one"
Sure WoW is a great game, but you all have to agree that it requires allot more grinding than personal skill.
and to the comment above me: Sure there is games that req skills, take EvE for an example or Guild Wars.. the coming Age of Conan and Darkfall..
AoC/DF comment when you have played.

OMG.. you know GW is a skillbased game ? you have to use your skill to match up the right bar and right second class for example.. And ofcourse skill to use it right.. Try to be a good mesmer in gw and tell me how it went.
And Aoc/DF i go what they have on paper.. and currently what i´ve seen on paper those games looks like you need to have skill to be good at it.. not grind for months to be among the good.

I know you can only have 8 hotkeys at a time, yes, but it takes no skill to press a hot key, just good timing, yes having the correct spell/skill/talent set up is important but again no skill. Its more luck in GW if you roll a PvP fight with the a good skill-layout, at least in WoW you have all your attacks avaliable, and if anything its harder to PvP in WoW because we got more than 8 hotkeys to juggle.
Snowboarding down a mountain takes skill... no MMO needs skill.
