I've been thinking,
PvP is what attracts me to a game, pvp is unpredictable and has an endless range of skill bringing new challenges to a game. Games which Brings actual skill into pvp such as Guild Wars and Wow have the correct idea around pvp as its really down to that players skill and not so much items and or level.
Games like Lineage 2 does have great pvp although its heavly level based, its too dependant on the time you have put into the game and not so much the skill that is involved, if any.
I'm not currently playing any game, apart from a few hours of Counterstrike: Source. But i'm looking for a really hard hitting Pvp game that will hopefully knock my socks off.
Just some of my oppinions, would like to hear yours.

Why? Because I am a cooperative, not competitive, player.

Hell yeah, I think it is. Nothing better than PKing. ;D
I personally hate PvE content and like the competativenes in a well designed PvP game. Eve is a perfect example of a game that broke the mold of standard MMOs and offered a truly unique and ahead of its time game to us gamers.
I can understand everyone wants different things in thier video games. Here is hoping the MMOs coming down the pipe choose not to try to make their games appeal to everyone. So that they focus on a specific type of game and do that specific type very well.

I'm right there with you, Chessack. If I can't stay away from the PvP, then I don't wanna go there. One exception, though, is Auto Assault. With absolutely no DP, I'll roam around in Ground Zero and enjoy the PvP. (If I can ever get a toon high enough! )
I DO wish some sort of consentual MASS PvP system could work. I DO love large PvP battles. I guess as long as I don't lose anything I've worked to get, PvP is acceptable. But losing XP or, worse yet, gear, is not something I like. I've been mugged in RL. I don't need the same thing in my entertainment.

"I know what you're thinking: 'Why, oh WHY, didn't I take the BLUE pill?'"
I'm not talking about games having to be open pvp, its just that its really competitive and great to get envolved in.
I mean, why discriminate PVP specialists? They're a good addition to any worlds. Yeah, even griefers... I mean, gangbang fodder.
If I wanted to do nothing but kill semi-intelligent mobs and run the same scripted battle with said mobs, i'd go play elder scrolls or fable or some other offline RPG. Not that I don't like those types of games (which I love them) but that's not what I pay $15 a month for. And if you're one of those people who say "Well I like those types of games but I just like to play with my friends and a community". Yeah there's plenty of those games too, and almost all of them don't require a subscription fee.
I don't understand the point of an online subscription based game where you can't do something beyond what I can do if I run an offline RPG and AIM at the same time. MMO's are pointless without PvP.

Exactly, i hate the fact that in games theres always some kind of penalty that you get if you fall in pvp, it pulls players away from it. They should keep it fun.

Mass PvP: You are really sure you want this? Imagine those 30 archers targeting you alone (coordination via voice tool) and killing you with one volley. You will not have a chance to heal or shoot back. You simply die. In mass fights it is all about organisation and focus fire. It is never about playing your toon well to win the fight.Losing stuff: Yes if you have to grind like mad for your uber demon sword of npc slayng then you will not want to lose it in a pvp fight. But imagine that that sword can be crafted. By you yourself. Imagine you are fighting over a new ressource. If you win the fight you get enough ressources to build another 10 uber demon swords. If you lose you still have those 9 swords from your last win. When all of your gear can be crafted you will not care that much about losing it. Of course this is a game that is not centered around having uber gear like in wow. Its about who can do the best with a given set of items.

If it's an FFA server (PvP anywhere, anytime) that's boring because it means basically I'm PvP all the time, and can never concentrate on PvE.
I like to take breaks from both, depending on what's going on. Got a great PvE group going on? Great! The guild is making a major attack? Great! Just depends.
MMORPG Maker
If I for some unexplainable reason would wish to play a PvE-only game, I would choose Single Player Game over MMORPG any day of the week. Quests are way better and I don't have listen to 1337 kiddies offering to strip for me.
It isn't needed, but doesn't hurt to have pvp as an option in any mmorpg.

OK but this right here makes the point of the person a few posts ahead of yours, that said MMORPGs need to stop appealing to everyone and try to appeal to a specific target. Some PVPers like massive penalties because they want losing to mean something. Others, like yourself, just want to do it for fun. You can't (easily) please both players in a single game (at least, not all on one server). Most MMORPGs try to please everyone by offering different servers or different "flags" but what ends up happening most of the time is pleasing no one.
Let's take SWG for example. As it launched, there was neutral, covert/PVP, and overt/PVP. Neutral meant you could not really get into PVP (other than friendly duels that were totally consent based). Covert/PVP meant you could get into PVP, but you could "hide" from it by staying covert. Overt/PVP meant you were open to be ganked by anyone in the other faction anywhere, at any time.
You would think this pleased a lot of people ("something for everyone" right?), but instead it just ticked everyone off. People who were true PVEers and didn't really like PVP, got ticked that so many nerfs, game re-balances, and other things were being done just because of PVP. "My profession got hosed due to PVP -- it's fine in the PVE game!" was often the lament. Meanwhile, people who liked wholesale free-for-all PVP, hated that 3/4 of the game population could "turn it off" and they could not attack them. If you ticked them off they wanted to be able to PVP you in the back of the head, and by being covert or neutral, they pretty well could not do that. You can go on and on with this sort of example but I think this makes the point. By putting all possible game modes into one game, they ended up ticking off everyone, instead of pleasing everyone.
Now, sequestering it by servers sometimes is a little better. However, I think sequestering it by GAME is better still. Just say, "There is no PVP in this game," or, "There is no PVE in this game," and let people go where they like.
But, instead, they try to appeal to "everyone" so that they can make more money, and end up ticking everyone off. So, I agree with the poster who said they need to diversify the market more. I wish they would do that. Sure there'd be lots of games I wouldn't play, but the ones I do play, would be really geared toward me and those like me.

If you are going to half-ass it, then just leave it out, and spend the time working more on the PvE...
But if you are going to attempt PVP then do it right. Make objectives, player run cities, sieges, etc...one of the things shadowbane got right.
The best thing about a developed pvp system is there is always content...Players make the content. And that's what keeps interests up. If you know one day you might wake up and your city was taken over...that's more of an adrenaline rush than doing the same instance run over and over again.

Played WoW since beta hoping for a change...never came. But this thread isn't about wow, so i won't get into it.
To elaborate, in my opinion, my preference for mmos as a requirement is they must have a good pvp system. If you're forcing me to raid, you better have things for me to do when I'm waiting for the raid to take place. And I really don't feel like doing the same instance over and over again. Bring diversity...changing landscapes (randomly generated dungeons/instances would even suffice)
