I think you guys who talk about "button smashing" will find it to be nothing like it at all. And if you watch the dev run-through posted on the official website you'll hear him say that you can only have a limited number of combos in any one combat (I think it's 8 that's is pictured there). You get more combo's in later lvls, but you have to find the ones you like the most. So it's not like in EQ2 or in WoW where you have 3 hotbars filled with special attacks and just run through a macro or the 1 - XX key in a combat. In addition, it's not like you will attack faster the more you hit the direction (numpad) keys, you will then miss the combos and prolly loose the combat (and finishing moves).
And for the Massive combats, I think it'll rock . True, it won't be like Arathi Basin in WoW, where you basically just fight in some open terrain over a flag, so (hopefully) it won't be utter chaos. But besieging an enemy (guild) settlement with loads of guildmates... if done right it's gonna be really cool.
I realize this article was written for an audience that thinks "the" is spelled "teh" and other such nonsense, but a little proofreading wouldn't hurt.
I predict that AoC will be hated by the tubs-o'-lard who like eating their cookies and cakes while executing macros every 2-3 minutes. As for those individuals looking for a more engaging mmorpg experience.........this game is for you.
I agree 100%. I guess some people get scared when they think they might have to have some skill to do well instead of only depending on how much time you have sunk into that char.

This might just be a deal breaker for me. I have no use for "twitchy" play. If this is truly their vision then you all have fun - I'll wait for a game more to my liking.

"The horseback combat also remains in the game allowing players to ride up and chop at their foes."
Obviously Garrett didn't explain the combat system well enough in his article. Basically you should go read about it for yourself as Funcom has a rather in depth FAQ on their website. For those who are too lazy or stupid to accomplish such a feat I'll give you a brief explanation.
A player will have SIX attack choices upper left upper middle upper right, left, middle, right. Those are the different ways you can swing whatever weapon(s) you're wielding. The killing blows are, from what I understand, simply a sequence of those basic attacks strung together. The offensive aspects of combat are active, but the defensive aspects are not active. To the individual who said that such a combat system would have issues in a MMORPG because of? lag I guess I don't know what you're talking about. No other mmorpg has tried to do this before that I have ever played, and I've played almost every english, and some non english, mmorpg's that there are. There is at least one video I have watched that involved quite a few devs fighting it out. So obviously it won't be a problem. I could explain why, but you actually think it would cause problems which only reveals that you don't know what you're talking about and I don't feel like explaining.
What the article failed to talk about was the magic system in Age of Conan. Go read up on it. It is also very unique and I think everyone who enjoys mmorpgs should read up on this game instead of reading are fairly shallow, sorry but it's true, article concerning one aspect of it. There are many things about AoC that are innovative. And yes I am a fanboi.
It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.
I realize this article was written for an audience that thinks "the" is spelled "teh" and other such nonsense, but a little proofreading wouldn't hurt.
ROFLMAO! I was thinking "Wow, he really needs an editor." I've written some articles on aoc. www.aocinformer.com under the name Dryctnath if anyone wants to learn more about the game. It is a good fansite I think. I really should write some more articles. Jade Empire has had my attention. And now Project: Top Secret will consume my soul. :0
It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.
Who ever said that the regular combat system in MMOs is "easy", "unchallenging" and "boring"? Well, granted, not all games has a good auto attack system, but ask any player that is familiar with the combat system in DAoC and he'll tell you that its anything but "easy", "unchallenging" and "boring".
While I hope AoC pulls off this combat system, I dont see where the twitch skill comes in. From what we've seen in the vids its: swing from upper left, swing middle right and end with a finishing attack. The two first attacks taking about two secounds each and the finishing attack being a 5 sec long animation while enemies are stabbing you in the back. If you cant move during attack or roll, dodge or block at all, I really dont see how this can be fun... at all. I do realize that there probably will be comboes and other things to spice it up later, but it still seems to me that it will end up being a stationary figth with people swinging at eachother just without the styles, abileties, positional and reaconaries that you'd find in a "boring" autoattack system.
Clearly, many here have misunderstood much of what the combat is going to be like. So I'll do like some others here, recommend you guys who thinks the combat system will be unsuccessful, to go read through the faq concerning this on the official website. Or just visit some fan-sites. And while you're there, be sure to pick up some more info on the pvp part as well. I'll say this though, most of the guys at FC developing this game loves some solid PvP action, and I know they'll do anything they have to to make it cool.
Wow people calm down, I understand you seem to fear the change but stop whining when FINALLY some devs move their asses to make our games what they should be ENTERTAINEMENT.
Some clarifications:
-In AoC Dodge Blocks etc are passives.
-There is no target system you hit what you hit (BUT this is not DDO, movements are realistic and you don’t whiff in the airs aimlessly running like a beheaded chicken hoping to hit something, or rather to have a good D20, your character will have ground)
-Combos in AoC are not the consoles fighting games complicated smashing combos. They just represent a sequence of natural moves, dictated by how IRL a human could chain these basic moves (Human body is not like Mr Fantastic’s one). In AoC there are 6: UP, UPPER-LEFT, DOWN-LEFT, DOWN, DOWN-RIGHT, UPPER-RIGHT, or more simpler as a clock 12:002:004:006:008:0010:00.
A natural move for example should be to follow a slashing from upper left to a slashing from upper right (Or could have been followed by a thrust from down right if it was a finisher).Try with a stick if you don’t see what I mean
-There is a collision system, there are formations, there are siege engines, so for the smashing button smash pvp fest think again.
So yes we will have to be active and we will have fun, thus I will be able to resubscribe to a MMORPG, thanks Funcom.
Until I get my beta testing spot on Age of Conan ( I will ,cuz I want!!!! ) I have been playing game called Mount & Blade which has very nice combat system and me thinks that this could bit similar. Also collisions sounds like you don't run through your enemies anymore I don't like auto combat system because it doesn't have anything to do with combat. Same in SWG, maybe your Bounty Hunter can get me on ground but in space I'll mop asteroids with your sorry little ass. Just kidding, no time for SWG, I'm burying myself into top secret project.
You're right................and I suppose you are accessing this website from you console right?
Kids like you make me laugh. And Since when is browsing the internet considered gaming? anyways MMOs are the only thing PCs have, if it wasn't for WoW it'd have nothing.
But hey according to you I am a child, what would I know right?

Actually FPS are pure PC games. Castle wolfeinstein3D and Doom were created because of the PC interface, keyboard and mouse, and thus are products from and for the PC. As fighting games (street fighter, tekken) are pure console genres and are meant to be played via a gamepad controller (originally a stick and 2 buttons).
The way these games, these different genres, were thought and their ‘philosophy’ were blend by the tools they rely on, in this case the interface between the man and the machine.
Sure every FPS is now ported on the different consoles, but the only things consoles are bringing to the genre is to bring it down so they can fit to the machine specs and the controller which is totally unfit for the genre.
(To sum it up just check the Shadowrun case)
Of course consoles will certainly end with internet browsers, keyboards and mouses, but then they’ll just be like a non upgradable PC in a nifty box with a Corp brand.
I wasn't really referring to the passive part of combat, more to the guys worrying about button smashing.
I haven't got any definite answers regarding anything, only what I've seen first hand and a collection of impressions from both reading the forums and watching Jorgen playing the game (the latest videos). To answer one question tho, I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to actively parry or dodge an attack like in, for example, Oblivion, other than stepping back. Maybe theres some luck bonus included for some defensive moves, but haven't really seen anything regarding that. Most of the info out there now is about the offensive part of combat combat. One revolution at the time you know .. =P
I really love the fact that they are doing something new. No doubt, there should be more companies like funcum.
Its just that the way I've understood the attacking is basically a manual autoattack where you can choose the direction you strike and that does damage in area and that is stripped of most other interactivity that a regular auto attack system has. That is before combos (that dont SOUND like anything special) and whatever fluff they add on though.
This is what I have seen this far though. Its likely to improve, but with those limitations, I dont see how much. The magic system sounds promising, so im looking forward to hearing more about that.
Oh, and I will check out the latest gameplay movies.
His name is probably Jørgen btw (Your keyboard is gimped).
Im very excited about the game. I'll probably even buy a DX10 rig for AoC (and Crysis), Im just a little sceptic towards what everyone seem to thinkknow will be so great.
FPS, RTS and MMOs are mainly PC I think. Though, the consoles does support usb mice and keyboards. Then again, I and so many with me will stick to the PC.
I dont deny that its possible to see myself playing all types of games on the console if it plays exactly as a PC as long as you have a good enough TV. At this time though, thats not the case.
Personally ive never understood USB keyboards and mice for Consoles.. am i the only one that has their TV and game system in front of a couch and not a desk? typing on ur lap and running the mouse on the fabric of ur jeans only goes so far for accuracy
A skill/action based combat system is what i wanted to see in a mmorpg for a long time. I could see why some of the hardcore geeks don't like it though because they will miss being the king of the hill with there hot keys, epic gear and addons (which is a nice word for hacks).
Rabidwardog sucks with hotkeys, thats for sure. And you seem to be exposed to too much wow as you think epics and addons is a part of the regular MMO combat system.

...this is a good piece. And the writer is right. There aren't enough MMO's on the market with combat system that keeps you really involved.

Since Im by no means an expert on the area, can any of you help me clarify these few issues?
1. Can you move while attacking or do you have to wait for the animation to end before you can move?
2. Can you cancel actionsanimations (as in god of war, you can block or dodge at ANY time during most attacks).
3. Can you manually block, dodge, roll or counter a hit by any means but walking away?
4. Is it still slow attack animations with even slower cool finishing moves?
5. What makes combos a combo, exept swinging from different direction in a set pattern (not sure I even understood that one)?
