anarchy online- we all know the sad story of this game, when it first came out it had so much promise but before they fixed it, too many people sadly left (admittedly, including myself)...however it ended up being a great game, now its too late unfortunately, the graphics are so outdated thats its incredibly painful to even try and there is just not enough players around to make it fun for me.
swg- lol, ok...without re-beating a dead horse thats been beaten into the dust again, i, also, left this game before it supposedly got decent, although i heard they messed it up again so i wouldnt try this one again...hmm..im seeing a pattern here that i dont have much patience with lousy starts...hehe
some of the other, less well known games i havent tried besides some of the Non-online sci-fi games which none of them i thought were any good and cant think of any worth mentioning...
What im hoping and praying for every day is that STO (star trek online) turns out to be my savior. Ill probably be a little more patient with this game than the others since i am a pretty big Star Trek fan and its definately where i want to be...i remember saying like 8 years ago that if they ever come out with a decent Star Trek mmo i would be there and not look back..now its coming and i cant wait.
One thing Im very happy about so far is it really seems like the devs (Perpetual Entertainment) are doing thier best to create a great MMO...Ill be watching this one every step of the way, and assuming they keep up everything thier doing so far, I think its going to be a long time until i need to look for another game to play.
P.S. in the meantime, im playing EvE ...also a great game by the way, but its not for everyone, Im really enjoying it but there is no character per se that you can run around with...your identity is your spaceship only. Alot of friends of mine that play EvE are also keeping an eye on STO i might add also.
edit: i said in EvE your identity is only your spaceship, its fair to add that you also get a portrait too that has no animation, its just that..a "portrait" that you create when you first log in...they are talking about having actual character movement later but only to a limited degree in a space station "hub" and it may be pretty far off till it happens, not sure about when though. If you can get beyond that though the other stuff is great and it has a great community imo.
EA in it's infinate wisdom shut down the only decent Sci-Fi (apologies to EVE) when they closed the doors on E&B. It was a damn fine MMO and personally I think if they would have kept it going a bit longer may have seen a few more subscriptions considering that MMO's and pay for play was still in it's infancy and many people hadn't yet accepted the idea of a monthly fee to play a game.
I've tried EVE and it's just not for me. E&B was exactly what I wanted out of Sci-Fi. I still have my copy of the game as I can't seem to throw it in the trash.

I miss E&B was truly a great game up until they shut it down.
Sure it had its problems.. but they could have been fixed. Alot of what the player-base had been promised was slightly altered or missing entirely when it hti shelves.. but it was still a good game regardless! A little hard work to tweak it and once the MMO community matured up to the idea it would have been even better! Its a shame..
But on the topic...
Personally? I'm sick of Fantasy MMOs. I used to have no preference on what i played. If it looked good, sounded good, and played well.. Awesome! I'm in!
But now i'm looking for something new. I'm tired of seeing Orc vs Human or battles being raged between wizard and warrior. it gets old after a while and i never really was a fan of dungeons and dragons anyways. I didn't play it in my basement when i was younger and i never will! I'm a man of the stars. I love the idea of space and spaceships. Aliens and Hostile take overs. Bring it on baby!!
I want something wholesome and complete. New and inventive.. but all i see around me are half-completed Sci-FI MMOs and a mindless bucket of Fantasy MMOs. I once had someone try to tell me Fantasy and Sci-Fi were the same thing.. ha-ha!
Maybe i just have some form of gamer's ADD. Can't stay with a specific genre for too long... but i need a change of pace! Something different than the mundane hack and slash of medeival Earth-variants with Elves, Dwarfs, Ogres, and Goblins. I want lasers.. aliens with twenty eyes! and ships that go *woosh*
I want Tabula Rasa!

Infinity is still very much 'vapourware'. They have the combat prototype, but this doesn't relate all that well to the finished game, and many of the concepts and core design mechanics and principles that should already be in place are not.
It will be interesting to see how this project develops, however.
im tired of Fantasy too, i wouldnt mind seeing more sci-fi, but what i would really like to see are some dam historical games, i would be addicted to a medieval europe based kind of game, if done right and with a skill based system. I am honestly getting tired of this magic shit, and always needin a "healer" or a "nuker" or a "DoTer" i would like a game with just a huge variety of weapons and specializations and archers, maybe crossbowman, or hell musketeers.

Although I do like some fantasy games (not wow), and played a lot of table top in my early days, I can safely say that sci-fi is where my heart lies. I'd rather see a not so great sci-fi game or any other genre (i.e. examinus/zombie) then I would yet again another fantasy game. Fantasy at this point, to me, is stagnate. It has no real growth, only perfection of improvements. All of the others have potential for growth because they are under developed.
SWG the early days was a good shot at it, and one I learned from. EVE is another, although the space was beautiful I just could not stand the leveling/skill system. Earth and Beyond was very promising but a rough beginning and closed way too soon. The other attempts are good as well but they just don't quite have it. We can learn from all these examples and grow from them, unlike fantasy.
You'll see a bit more on it very soon as the PR package hits mmorpg.com and other sites now that GDC is over with but Force of Arms looks to be a new sci-fi contender on the field. We have mechs, we have pew pew pew, we have aliens, we've gotta a helluva story to tell as well, space is on our minds but not ready yet as well as the rest of the galaxy and beyond.
i have to agree and that is why any mmorpg no matter how good it is and has a fantasy theme.. im not playing.. im sick and tired of it... thats why im looking at hellgate london and huxley.. post apocalyptic set in the future... =/
i didnt read all posts just wanted to answer the first post, if u re tired of fantasy, dont play them and go find some sci-fi games i m sure there bunch of them but i still prefer fantasy as the most part of the gamers do
I am pretty sick of fantasy MMO's. Cant wait for Fallen Earth or Tabula Rasa
Me either. I love fantasy RPGs as much as the next guy, but the market is inundated with them.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
It's not just the fantasy setting, it's the lack of variety in the fantasy settings. They're all the same Tolkienesque D&D knockoffs with Dwarves, Gnomes, at least two kinds of Elves, and everybody's gotta have their damn paladins and wizards and priests and rogues. I quit playing WoW and started playing EQ2, then quit playing EQ2 because it felt like I was still playing WoW.
Now I'm playing Auto Assault. Despite its bugs, low population, and tedious crafting system, I am loving the hell out of it. No goddamn Elves. No goddamn wizards. Just cars and guns and blowin' stuff up.
Kind of funny, but "once upon a time" RPG's in general were a very niche genre. This is back before MMO's mind you. A good single player fantasy RPG was far and few between. Once every couple years, or three years one good one would come out.
enter the MMO. Every MMO seems to aim for that fantasy roleplaying setting. Forgotton are the games that were so popular and their themes. Theres countless varieties of "roleplaying" spread across different scenerios. Yet when the big named game developers go out and design an MMO, they fall down on the sword of fantasy and create yet another mundane, uninspired and unoriginal fantasy MMO.
its almost like the fantasy MMO is the definition of first and second gen. MMO's. It wouldnt surprise me that fantasy themed MMO's soon become niche, and game developers start to think for themselves and create new MMO worlds completely out of the box. Hell, look how successful Planescape Torment was. Look at Fallout. Both games arguably the best roleplaying games ever put out on media, yet not one of these genres has made it to the big time. No, instead game developers we all know of like Turbine, SOE, Mythic create their fantasy MMOs.
at least NC-soft has the balls to come up with something outside of the box with games like City of Heroes and Auto Assault. Close, but not close enough. Theyre too casual.
I do know this trend will change soon. I mean, it has to.. right? Im with the rest of you, ive parked my fantasy MMO's and im back to playing other things. The Fantasy genre is so stale its not even funny. I dont care what you want to call your world, an elf is an elf, a dwarf is a dwarf, a gnome is a gnome. Oddly enough, in every game.. however unique they like to claim it to be.. each of the races I listed share the exact same traits. One is agile, the other hearty, and the other tinkers with shit.

I've tried this site multiple times and it never loads. Is this vaporware too?
Defintely not vaporware, the site has been up over a year and most people have no problem getting to it. I just clicked the link and it is working. We had 281 people sign up last month, this month only 15 so far but the PR package has been sent to the editor on this site so it's hard to tell when they will get to posting the information.

Can't get enough of it Though, maybe some variation is nice, see AC1/AC2 for originality.
