(Poll - EQ Vets) If there was server with Classic, Kunark, and Velious ONLY - would you play?

healz4uhealz4u Member Posts: 1,065
Feel free to discuss, if you want to.

As one who cannot find a fun MMORPG to play, I am seriously considering returning to EQ (three-boxing again).  I have thought about it, and I have determined that to get me to play again, I would want to play on a server with the original, kunark, and velious expansions only.

But... what do you think?

I would like the server also to be original for at least a few months (two or so) then release Kunark and then after a few months Velious.

A few years ago maybe. Now not really interested. You know like you've got 4/5 year old games you don't play now because you've played them to death or they've aged- kind of like that. Though, there are multiple expansions I haven't seen so that might be the only incentive for me going back to EQ.

I don't care what anyone says. If SOE opened an EQ classic server (or servers, as demands would probably require it), and made sure to advertise it as much as possible (via website adds on every major gaming site, magazine adds, e-mail to all SOE accounts, active as well as inactive) I could bet every cent to my name that it'd be a smashing success. Sure, it might cost them a bit to get the word out, but I'm sure it would bring back many, many old customers who quit because of the insane release of content that the game has been pushing out for the last 7 years.

As for them not having the old code, which I've seen many people bring up with this idea, it doesn't have to be exactly like the original (heck, the progressive server was close enough imho) as long as it stops after around velious or maybe Luclin at the most. I loathe what PoP did to the game and would gladly pay twice as much for a server or two that stayed with the way the game used to be.

    Here's hoping =)

    Exactly.

Luclin is fine.  I would accept up to Luclin for sure.  In fact, after reconsidering it, I think up to Luclin is a good idea. =D

I agree it would be a huge success as well.

The progression server was a zerg-guild thing that was the worst experience I ever had, and I have played EQ for eight years.  It was a huge mistake.   However, this concept would be different.  No progression board or even progress.  Kunark would be released after a few months, then Velious, and so-forth.

    I would love this opportunity.

Agreed wholeheartedly, I'd play on a server like this in a heart-beat. After looking through the official EQ forums, I found this thread with something interesting posted in it: http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=109624

This statement from one of the Elder members of the site is what cropped my attention: "There was mention in the dev chat of server possibly coming up with the "new box" at the end of the month - Prog Servers were an experiment that IMO didn't get quite as much longterm response as they wanted - I'd tend to think IF a new server does come up that it'll be either a completely normal one, or progression with some heavy modifications from our current version."

I don't know if there's any truth behind it but it would definitely make sense to me. Their releasing their 8th anniversary compilation on the 23rd of this month afterall, so I could honestly see this happening. I just hope that they go with a progressive server atleast, if in fact their not willing to put out a classic server. Of course I'd hope they'd make the time locks much longer than on the last 2 progressive servers, so everyone can actually enjoy the endgame and classic feel for a much longer period of time.

I'll most likely give it a shot either way I guess, but I still hope that a classic server is planned for some point in the near future.

I would come back to EQ for a new regular server, or MAYBE a progression server, but I really hate the idea of being stuck in the original EQ without all the LoY and later tools, and I'd seriously miss some of my favorite later expansions. I notice that there's no option for "No, Regular servers are good enough for me".

    Wow! Let us hope so!

Up to Luclin would be awesome, and maybe not release Luclin for a long time....

I was talking with some friends today, and they are on board and we are deciding our classes now - JUST in case SOE did the smart and right thing with the server we described and all want (even yearn for)!

I'll definitely be keeping my fingers crossed =). If they do decide to release the new server, I'll be going with a woodelf ranger like I had back in the old days.

This anticipation is going to drive me nuts hehe. I really hope they decide to do this.

Hehe.  I am not sure if I posted this (I have been posting a lot lately and might be addicted to this great web page and forum) but this is what I am thinking:

ME:  SK/SHAMAN/DRUID (three box but my brother will play when he is online).

FRIEND:  WIZARD/BARD (he might want to duo box a Wizard/Enchanter, though).

EDIT: I will probably end up having another account with a Cleric that my brother and I will split in money to ensure we can res ourselves and our friends.

SECOND EDIT:  Btw, if you want to join us, let me know, if they release this server. =D

I am excited, and people are talking about this.  SOE really should simply make a server up to LUCLIN in which the expansions open every 3, then 4, then 5 months.  It would be profitable.

The problem with a static classic server will make itself clear to you in a few months of playing on it.  Stagnation.  There's only so much content that's in classic EQ.  Granted it's quite alot though, and it's good for a few months of fun gaming with friends.  Not much more than that in my opinion.  Defeating Trakannon with your guild is a great achievement, the 8th time you do it for VP key parts... not so much.

Also keep in mind that no matter how you'd like it to be, it won't be 'classic'.  Hotzones will be still present.  Loot from hotzones will be present.   In fact it'll be the majority of what you'll wear and farm.  If you think you'd be waiting in line for those gatorscale leggings in guk for your druid- you wouldnt be when you can be wearing Spell Haste IV legs from GE.  Especially if all the zones thru Luclin are opened at release.  The difference in power provided by the hotzone drops is quite noticable.  If these are left in the game it'll completely skew the experience in my opinion.

Sounds great, I'm all for joining up with you guys if a new server is released. I've never trying duo boxing since I normally only have one active account at a time, plus I'm not sure my comp could handle it, but if you don't mind having a ranger, I'd be happy to join =).

    Here's hoping =)

    AWESOME!

We are excited about possibly having you!

We have totally changed our classes, though. ROFL.  We cannot decide.  Well, I cannot decide. LOL.

My friend is pretty much doing warrior/ench, so I have to go a healer and probably a dps.

We would be honored to have a Ranger, my Friend. =D  Feel free to private msg me at any time, and I can also provide you our AIM and email as well.

    Cheers.

Good to hear, this is starting to sound really exciting. Starting the game again with a couple of new friends would make it a heck of alot more fun hehe.

Oh btw, I'm going to post a link to a thread a started earlier tonight on the main EQ site. I read through the March 21st Dev chat log on the stratics website and I found something that really gave me some hope. Check it out, you should get a kick out of it too =):

    http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=109700

Let's hope that it might actually happen soon =)) (Btw, incase you didn't feel like going to the link, I basically just quoted a question asking about a possible new server and also the answer that the Dev gave him.)

I guess I'll just go ahead and post the question and answer on here to save you guys some trouble:

Question-" With the new bundle pick hitting stores soon and people growing tired of other games out there I think it would be a good time to draw some new people to the game. I think if there was a fresh start server (no new rulesets, just like Stromm) it would be a great success. Any plans to possibly implement this?"

Answer- "We are always looking for new ways to draw new players (and older ones) back to EQ. In a recent chat, a player suggested a very similar idea as well. I can't say that we are definitely doing a new server, but I can say we've discussed it. Good idea though!"

It's not exactly the answer I was hoping for, but it still gives me a tiny ray of hope =).

Wow, for some reason, my last post didn't use any of the spacing that I put it....very weird. I'll try posting once more.-

Well, I don't know what the deal is - it just won't let me space or form seperate paragraphs for some reason. I guess you'll have to read through the block of text, sorry =/. I'd suggest just visiting the link to the thread I made earlier actually. Everything worked fine on that page.

    WOW!

    Very exciting!!

If they have a new server, that would be outstanding; it would at least hold me over until WAR (or possibly AoC).  However, I might just stick with EQ, particularly if it the servers stop at Luclin.

However, I am pretty much committed to playing even if there is not a new server, but I think that would extremely smart to draw (as it was already discussed) new and veteran players.

By the way, another one of my old EQ friends says he thinks he is in, and he is going Monk. =D  So we are building and growing here, and I am just very thrilled.  As I write this, a friend of mine is in EQ now experimenting with Gnome Paladin (I do not think I have ever seen a gnome Paladin!) for the anniversary ed. and (hopefully!!) the new server!
  • neschrianeschria Member UncommonPosts: 1,406

Y'all are sorely tempting me to play EQ again. I never seem to escape from Norrath permanently.  I'm not even particular about what kind of server, as long as I have other people to group and chat with in game. I'd prefer a new "regular" server, but for the chance to start fresh, I'd be willing to start on any sort of new server.

My start on the Progression server last time was scuttled by trying to play with my husband and accomodate what he wanted to do. His favorite class is mage, and I like to play tanks (SKs for the most part) or melee dps (I <3 my zerker...which wasn't even AVAILABLE). Those are craptastic combinations for duoing, in any case, so I started an enchanter and then a wizard to play with him, and about the time I started having fun, he was back on our old server playing his old mage. If I'm not trying to play with him and I can play anything I want... maybe it would be more fun the second time around. I'd sure miss zerkers and drakkins though.

My husband had a gnome paladin.  :)  I played it more than he did. Very rare race/class combo for sure, though.

Darn it! Now I am really wanting to go play EQ. I think I'll go fire up the game PC and play L2 til the feeling passes... I'm not going to get any work done today; I can feel it. (LOL)

    Hehe, very cool.

I am patching right now as of writing, and I am really excited about playing again.

If you want to play with us, you are more than welcome to; we would we be happy to have more.  Ironically, I might not duo or trio this time around and stick to a single class.

    We shall see. =D

    Cheers.

that would be awsome the game went to hell after luclin was released anyway
  • tylerwicktylerwick Member Posts: 446

Heh, this is really quite Funny, I have been seriously considering going back to EQ and playing again, granted I would like to use my high level characters again but if a server came out that only had upto Luclin I would strongly consider starting fresh on that server. If by chance a server does come up that like that give me a hollar and Ill contribute to your regular power Group.   I already have a dedicated 24/7 TS server thats been up for over a year, that is used regularly.

shoot me an email if somthing comes up shoot me an E-Mail, or E-mail me what server you are playing.  tylerwick@wowway.com

I doubt a server such as this will come out honestly and if it does it wont last that long, people will demand more on that server.

I was actually considering waiting for the Anniversary Set that is coming at the end of the month. $20 for EQ and Every Expansion.

  • tylerwicktylerwick Member Posts: 446
Just though Id put some input on that link regarding progression server.   They have progression servers now which I think is a good idea but it does not stop at any one expansion eventually it will be back to the recent expansion.  And with the amount of time people put into these games nowadays I dont suspect that will take too long.   If my thinking is correct, a new Expansion is unlocked after a certain number of set events has been accomplished.

LOL.  Some of us could not wait!

However, if the anniversary edition does include a new server, we will play on that;  we are trying to resist the temptation of playing our old character, however.  HAHA.

I think a new server would be the smartest thing for them, although it is highly unlikely it would stop at Luclin.  It is like, "SOE -take my money! - please?"  We want a server to Luclin but it does not exist; we might need a signature drive to have it.

We would be thrilled and honored to have you, and I will email you with all the details when I have them.  I am excited. =D

I'm actually thinking about starting up again. EQ was my first MMO, I started playing back in November of '99, when there was just EQ classic, no expansions. Actually, I bought my first PC specifically to play the game. I ended up playing into the Kunark days, but eventually quit before Velious was released. Since then I've played Asheron's Call, WoW, EQII, Guild Wars, Vanguard:SoH, and City of Heroes. I've tried out free trials of DAoC, DDO, EVE Online, and now the open beta for LOTRO, but I'm looking to get back to some of that old school magic and nostalgia from the early days before I take a break from PC gaming and head over to the 360.
