I'm leaning towards WAR, but I think that's mainly because I played TT Warhammer for a long time, and I love the lore and the whole RvR system they're implementing. It's obvious that Games Workshop is deeply imbedded in the dev process too, so I know the game isn't going to do something outrageous and completely rewrite the lore or class types. I am looking forward to AoC too (*crosses fingers and hopes he wins beta invite). One of my only real concerns about AoC is that lvl 1-20 (I think) is completely solo effort. This can be nice, provide a good way to learn game without distractions, but I'm curious how long it takes to lvl from 1-20. I don't wanna pay $15/month for a single-player game. Whatever. All I can say is I definitely will play both, and hopefully be able to make up my mind quickly. I like saving my sick days for when I'm actually sick.
The dev's have made it clear that the monthly fee will not activate until you move past the 'single-player' portion. As long as you buy the game, you can play as long as you like below level 20 for no additional charge. They have also stated that it will not be entirely single-player, and will allow for interaction with other players; however, it is not necessary to team with other players to complete any pre-20 quest. Additionally, after you advance one character past level 20, you'll have the option of skipping the Tortuge section of the game on future characters.

That invalidates my biggest worry about AoC then.
why do people argue over these games? obviously age of conan is the better game. it is better because it has more to offer. it has a revolutionary combat system that gets you more involve in it. you can build your own town and take over outposts or whatever they were called which are like castles. the best customization of your character i have ever seen. you can customize their face, muscle mass, even their arse. all of this is what warhammer is missing. warhammer looks cool and all but age of conan has more to offer. plus it is rated m which means we are gonna see some blood and heads chopped off. hopefully this will prevent immature children from playin.
plus it is rated m which means we are gonna see some blood and heads chopped off. hopefully this will prevent immature children from playin.
It is precisely that fact which means there will be more immature people playing. I highly doubt that many parents pay any attention to game ratings, they're just happy that something else is babysitting their kids. I've said before, I want to play AoC, but I think that with the whole "most mature mmo ever" thing, we're going to be seeing droves of obnoxious idiots coming out of the woodwork to play. That's just my point of view though, I could be wrong.
Age of Conan has 3 things going for it that interest me...
1. Free for all server
2. Mature Rating
3. Graphics
----- The things that I am skeptical about age of Conan.
1. Funcom (Havent really produced anything worth playing, imo)
2. So many new features & classes, will they all work? not likely ...
3. AoC is trying to have a balance of pve and pvp and really is there ever a balance? No.
=============================================
What I like about Warhammer
1. Mythic is Solid .... (DaoC)
2. RvR / 100% pvp
3. Less grind than AOC
What I dont like about Warhammer
1. Skaven were left out
2. There are only support healing classes, which is different , could be bad , could be better (no main healing)
3. Graphics arent that crazy ... which in terms of mmos has never been the case the really.
I think warhammer will have a better launch and will have better gameplay when it comes to PVP. If you have the time to grind I think Age of Conan will provide you with alot more to do overall.. myself I am looking for gameplay and mostly pvp. Yes AOC has bloodmoney and gore... free for all server is what got my interest.... but then I think of the grind that AoC will be.
p.s: I am still probably going to end up trying both. lol

war and conan both have safe and hot zones to lvl/pvp in.
conans grind isn't in it's pve area, its in the pvp and pestige lvls, kinda like realm ranks in daoc.
as to my knowlede conan has not announced a pvp ffa server.pvp ffa is where you can kill anyone anywhere.
Conan has private property ,WAR is all state owned (sounds like cold war talk).
conan pvp is open field, war is instanced and open
war has a proven game engine, conan's is "revolutionary" or unproven.
I guess in the end whichever engine works best will win.
That's bullsh-t and you know it Xzen. There WILL be PvE raiding in AoC. There WILL be loot rewards for those raids. The raid rewards WILL be better than anything you can get doing anything else. So you WILL have to farm raids if you want to keep progressing your character and be competative in AoC. And this means that PvE raiding WILL be the majority of the end-game. The PvP will be meaningless to anyone not in a big guild because the border kingdoms are almost certainly going to be dominated by just a few big guilds on each server. The last time I had this argument here one of the supporters on this board went to the AoC boards and actually tried to get the devs to give a clear, unambiguous answer about raid rewards versus non-raid rewards....and they wouldn't do it. <waves at Sturmrabe>
Plz prove it with an article written by a good source plz if not keep ur WoW memories out of here.
why wouldn´t they bother? is it all about reward? shouldn´t the prime incentive in a game be FUN? if raiding ain´t fun for most why would you artificially push players into raid content by adding better rewards?
your statement here is exactly what bothers me about raids. from my raid groups roughly 70 % wouldn´t have gone raiding if it wasn´t for the rewards, many quitted after having enough of this raid crap.
My earlier post deals with this already:
Quote:
Regardless of if you view the loot as an "extra" or a "must", the fact is something difficult needs to be rewarded otherwise players will not do it. Fun is not a good enough reason in an MMO environment. Fun is a very important reason, and a very large part of it...but not the only thing.
The issue is that fun is (or can be) universal. If small group play and raid play are generally equal in fun-factor, and one is more difficult, but both yield the same reward...it should be quite obvious which content will be used and which content will be ignored.
Nobody is gonna BOTHER raiding, if all you give them is some sword that looks kinda cool but is 100% idential to everyone else's sword other than the looks. It's a simple effort vs. reward analysis for almost anyone to figure out that it's not worth it to do something like that.
I dont think you can get away from repeatable Pve content in the end game. And you can't give out anything of consequence to every person on a large raid every time the encounter is completed. I am just being honest, if a boss is only killable once or you "got what you needed" immediately then you look for something else, meaning the content was consumed one time, it took less time for it to be consumed probably by a factor of 10 than it did to create it.

I think there will always be an inclination towards making epic encounters which require a lot of people in a game so heavily based around multiple players and guilds.
Without large-scale, rewarding content...I think guilds would be fairly disappointed.
All I would point out here is that there are many MMO players that do enjoy "raiding." Given that well-coordinated raids are one of the harder things to execute in many situations, I think it would be inappropriate not to give raiders a tangible reward for their effort and successes in coordination......
....If you think about it logically, if for instance 5-man events gave as good of rewards as 40-man events, who would do 40-man events at all?......
And there is more of that sort of thing if you care to do some research. The underlying theme coming from the devs is that:
1. there will be PvE raiding in AoC.
and
2. PvE raiding MUST be rewarded better than any other activity or nobody would do the PvE raids.
And if you can't figure out from that what kind of game AoC is going to be then you are being willfully blind.
By the way, did you know that AoC was orignally intended to be entirely PvE? The original plan was for it NOT to be a PvP game at all. They tacked on PvP because a lot of people insisted that it should have PvP. Now granted that happened pretty early but still, at it's heart and in the developers minds it is a PvE game with PvP added to it.
That last post is giving me ToA flashbacks.coupled with memories(brief)of shadow bane where you couldn't even really play till your guild/boys/crew logged on in primetime.I must add that if my firstborn's life depended on it I would go with gamebryo 2.2.
WAR's a safe bet to be an 8-9 out of ten
Conan's for some reason beyond my comprehension is making high risk moves to land it in the 9plus range if they win the roll of the dice. But if they dont were looking at another shadowbane and a dismal 5-6.
Raiding isnt all that bad its just retarded when every new instance takes atleast 5+ hrs to complete and you faced with the same mobs same bosses for months and months to come with little advance. If both AoC and WaR manage to focus on PvP (RvR) then PvE they will both be rather successful games. PvP is fun even tho its sensles killing over and over again. Who can say they enjoy a good FPS where all u do is run around in your favorite lvl and just kill people for hours on end. How many thousands of people are still playing CS where are you do is run around killing people in the same crapy dust lvl. If AoC and WaR focus on pvp they will get a big audience because killing other people is fun exept with guns we can kill each other with swords and magic and make our guy looks badass and take over castle and such. Since its an MMORPG there will be thousands of players in a community where u can pvp quest and do other fun still but still enjoy and great fun war against each other. Oh and Neanderthal you suck.
Big PvE raids, aka ToA destroyed DAoC.I don't believe mythic would do that again.Conan most likely might have it for items for keeps ala shadowbane(I hope).

You say scary things there
AoC never was the horse I was betting (Darkfall is), but it would be very sad to see yet another PvE game with PvP tagged on as an aftertought.
I'm looking forward to seeing how both games do. I think it's past time that the MMORPG genre evolved after a decade of stagnating and whether you like or hate WoW, Blizzard has kicked every other developer out there in the rear and really forced them to re-examine how they make MMORPGs.
I think WAR and AoC will be the two main games that will shape the genre depending on how the market responds to each of their slightly differing approaches.
It seems that AoC is going for more of a guild-centered approach. Guilds can build cities and wage battle against each other. Clearly AoC is meant to attract the big, uber guids interested in PvP.
WAR has a slightly different approach to PvP. They will still have guild support but Mythic seems to be trying to focus more on the community as a whole with game mechanics like Public Quests and their Realm vs Realm campaign.
As I said, it will be interesting to see how both games do. I'm a fan of both licenses so I will try both then pick which one I like best. Trying to say one is superior to the other at this point when neither game is even in beta-testing is ridiculous.

Interesting opinion. It does seem that AoC is trying more unique (and largely untested) game mechanics while WAR is more about refinement of Mythic's DAOC mechanics.

We don't know which will come out ahead or be better irl(yes its real). However I am familiar with some of the directions WAR and Conan are taking.WAR from long time daoc. And shadowbane(which is free) is along the lines of AoC.
let's assume AoC makes a revolutionary breakthru with thier engine.
Like you Said AoC is guild/nation oriented, theres almost no lfg outside of guild/alliance.in practice mainly guild.in pvp game you need at least 4 visible players off peak to do anything.being servers are slotted for time windows for keep takes, ect.the population's are divided by int'l time zones to different servers.Anotherwords I can't run with the euros/aussies in the morning/afternoon est. Then later on run with the US players from 7-11 est. This means when I log on in the day im sol, unless I wanna craft or if by rare chance i touch up the keep.AoC is making such a fundamental mistake that has shadowbane not even being played for free.
Mythics direction is your guild isnt much more than an emblem and stats on the herald.WAR is 24/7 i can log on almost any time and lfg with a lil effort be in 6man pvp.The flexibility of play time will pull many like a drug into it.
Persoanally ive never been a prime time fan,so to switch from WAR to AoC during the 4-5 hrs of US primetime when its playable,my crew is on,WAR is in Zerg mode ,ect. Is A doable option.Im piss poor but i can keep the smoke in the box and pay $1 per day in sub fees.
What I have presented would be the Ideal setup for me imo,and alot of other US players. But what I'am basially conceding is that AoC is going to time wise be my secondary game. It's only human nature we are drawn to the path of least resistance.Mythic's direction will make finding good grps(pvp/pve) 24/7 less effort.since guild means little ,all people care about is if u got vent, can heal, assist, ect.

Yes you did, you showed that the developers fully intend to give more rewards for a 2-3 hour (the time period they stated their raid designs should take to complete) 40 man raid to kill the demonic servant guarding an ancient temple than a few guys killing a couple giant spiders. Congratulations.
What you continue to fail to show, mention, or even acknowledge, are the quotes that state that several other modes of acquiring equipment will have just as much, if not more, potential. I've showed them to you and Pantastic on multiple occaisions, and niether of you have yet to acknowledge it.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
I thought the items were going to be like this on a scale of 1-10:
Raid items are a 10 The best crafted items after filling sockets were a 9.5 The best random mob drops were a 7 I could have sworn they said that crafted items were just below raid items. Also, they never said they were making 5 hour raids. They could do raids that are 45 minutes to 2 hours, there is no final word.
Actually, they directly stated the best crafted items were ABOVE raid items if used in the situation they were customized for. They also mentioned that extremely difficult solo or small group encounters would result in loot highly comparable to raid gear.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
Works for me. I imagine it is like THE BEST crafted items are just above THE BEST raid items than or you need to collect mats from raids to make them. I hate going around looking like everyone else.

You're not providing all the information and purpousfully spreading false information. Go check out the information for your selves and ignore this guy.
I'm probably going to see if I can trial each, and see the first reviews after there releases. I'm about equally interested in both games, but I am a huge Warhammer fan in general, tabletop, 40k d.o.w. pc, ect ect, the books also.
But the well polished look of AOC looks awesome and Funcom seems to be at the top of there game.
