Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

This is set in a fantasy world

POTBS is loosely based on the Tim Powers novel ,On Stranger Tides.

In fact they are who got me to read the book .  So don't be surpised to see a ship full of Skeletons , or find a voodoo doll with your likeness.  Although I bet it'll be extremely rare.  This game is gonna be the cats meow , although a long time coming.  You have to hand it to them for staying behind there convictions and not putting out a half finished game like...Vanguard.

It's more based on history than OST, though we are fans of Tim Powers and OST.

lets see what happens when the major publisher that is backing them pulls their funding.

We don't have a publisher funding us.  We are self funded.

ya know, a few skeleton ships, some rare sea monsters (I said SOME), and this game just may pull me off WoW. Variety in sailing experiences ftw.

I love how when a game's developers take the time to post on a forum, they can shut down the people spewing stuff like what is found above...it makes for a much more informed community, rather than a bunch of skeptical people who don't actually know anything about the game or its maker.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I believe youre mistaking fiction for fantasy here. The Fantasy genre has many subcategories, like high and low fantasy aswell as swords and sorcery (wikipedia has it pretty expansive), but from all i've seen PotBS doesnt qualify for fantasy (well the apparent lack of pointy ears and magic (yea i know re-animated skeletons are KINDA magic, though its more of the curse, voodoo or necromancy variety than the true arcane magics) but merely for fiction, with strong roots in real history.

Wouldn't suprise me if they threw in a occasional ghost ship or sea monster into the game, either as a occasional  quest or even as a ingame event (like having Ghost ships roam the seas during Halloween). It would be nice to see some of those sailor supersticions take flesh in the game.

I think this game will do ok among the new releases coming out to ,its original and seems like it has a good game play,it will be a nice change of scenery to WoW  and others like it.

I hope they stick to more real world fiction than another Pirate MMO (POTCO).

Still sticking to real world fiction you have a large variety of truths today at the newsstands. Seeing a Loch Ness monster or Bermuda triangle might be too much. Ships with no crew and half eaten meals would be about the limit of what I would prefer.

Zombies and skeletons are not something I would like to see.

I know I'm probably in the minority.

You come in here and throw facts in the face of rumor boys and hype queens?

I love you guys... Suddenly I got all cuddly inside.

Its good to know that the devs are willing to come and lay down some facts about the game outside their official forums, shows that they do care about their palyerbase and keep them informed instead of forcing them to come to the official forums to try and find answers.

I, for one, am quite happy with their focus on history with the occasional Sci-Fi adventure tweaks.  A skeleton crew doesnt detract from the immersion. In fact , like posted a ways back, it brings to life some old sailing myths and legends.  :)  I just hope they take their time, do it right, and pull off an amazing game!  :)   I can wait quite awhile for something good that doesnt involve wizards, dragons, and spellcasting magic mumbo jumbo.

i think a little bit of fantasy would do this game good. seeing a sea serpent or kracken (hope i spelled that right) would be cool

The game does take place in the Bermuda Triangle... some fun could be had with that area, like a mission to go discover the reasoning behind a missing ship. Ships did go missing back then, so it is possible to run into a few ghost ships

I agree, it is a rare site to see a dev in a place like this.  You would think that it would happen more often than not, but it doesn't.  Anyhow, I salute you and look forward to hopping onboard and hitting the high seas.  Yar!

I think that the voodoo aspect of the game will be small and completly optional but don't quote me on that.

I think personally it should focus more on history and aim to be more realistic, of course a few of the old curses and myths in the game would add to the excitement, though I would hope it to be extremely rare... to see such a thing. Don't want to be sailing and see a ghost ship every few hours. Perhaps once a week... month...

I read that the supernatural stuff is purely optional. The example they gave was thus:

Rumours abound about a ghostly ship...so you can choose whether to dismiss it as rubbish and take it no further, or go sailing to find the ship!

    Sounds good to me!

You don't have to sail in this game, you can just port around.

I agree 100%!   When I first heard about this game way back, it seemed to be focusing only on being historically accurate but it's good to see the developers have loosened up.

For those crews back in Great Age of Sail the supernatural WAS real.    If you asked any sailor they would have sworn on their mother's graves that sea monsters existed and that they had seen at least one.  The oceans were terrifying places of mystery and wonder and horror.  Don't even try to tell a sailor that curses and magic weren't real either.

A game trying to do only historically accurate sailing would be dry and empty of that wonder.   We know that oceans in the game are just full of storms and rogue waves that sink ships, not krakens and dragons.    There would be only the chance of finding broken hulks on reefs, not mermaids and ghosts.     By incorporating some supernatural elements into the game, PotBS has brought back some of the sense of mystery and danger that was possible only when we didn't have satellite maps and GPS tracking systems.

    I say, well done.

    It's true.

Wait... that's not the word I'm looking for.  What's the word for 'opposite of true'?

Are you denying the ability to port at all in PotBS from one docked ship to another docked ship that could be half way across the game world?? If you say yes but it's limited then you just lied.
