Why is it, that NO ONE can make a GOOD MMORPG?

What is the problem here?

I have played WoW, CoH/CoV, EVE, EQ2, RFO, D&L, and SWG. The only game that even came close to a good MMORPG was Pre-CU SWG (and it was bugged to shit).  The rest have been garbage. I hate where MMORPGs are going. Everything in development is FPS or dumbed down so even a Caveman can master it. Even the highly anticipated STARTREK  ONLINE is being turned into EVE on Crack! And why does everyone feel the need to clone WoW? I hate that game with all it's Cookie cutter toons and epic bullshit!

Come on....CAN NO ONE DO ANY BETTER THAN WHAT I SEE NOW AND ON THE HORIZON!!!!?

Why not try Vanguard: Saga of Heroes? I remember reading Brad McQuaid's many posts on how it was going to be the next generation MMORPG, it was realeased earlier this year so why not try the 3rd gen?

I must admit I haven't bought it myself, so don't blame me if it's not up to par. Try to get a buddy key off someone in the Vanguard forums perhaps?

I have played EQ2 for 2 years and enjoyed it. I play Vanguard for the last 2 months and enjoy it also. Sometimes its not the games that are at fault but the people who play them. Not everything will be good for everyone. Keep looking maybe you will find something that appeals to you. But just because you havent , that doesnt mean that people arent loving the games you just mentioned.

Is vanguard really a good game to recommend? I mean... even if it is a good game... it feels like someone stabbed it a hundred times with a dagger called dagger of bugs +7

OP: it sounds to me that the real problem is that u cant enjoy what u allready have.

have u tryed to turn off ur computer and do something els?

or u could try to ask ur self a few questions... what are u looking for in a mmorpg ? what type of game? what type of pvp, and so on and on, insted of saying a "good game" u aint going to get any answers on that one.

u could also go into the dev forum, and make a loooong post with all ur briliant idea's to make them improve there games - allthought i wouldt suggest u to make a post there with big green font, and talk like u dont know much about games, and state some stuff insted of saying "good" "bad"

    There's one, Guild Wars.

(Please no replys with ''It aint a mmorpg!'' , because that's just a title)

Else, there proborally arent really any, LotrO will maybe turn good, but it wont be the cookie cutter.

VsoH is still very buggy, but it can turn good in some time.

I would suggest that you make a list of what you want in your mmo and then look for a game that fits your description. There never will be a game to fit all of your requirements though. You are right with most new games being cookie-cutter eq/wow clones. The problem is: This is what the carebearish majority wants and devs love the eq/wow style because it is easy to design, has lots and lots of timesinks and has been tested. Games requiring more thought/tactics/skill and less grinding are niche products (Guild wars is an exception).

FPS games: Uh, how many new fps games are being developed? I only know of huxley. I would love to see more fps games (if technically possible) because I hope that these games need more player skill (movement..) than todays autoattack/afk games.

Vanguard: Do not buy it before doing a trial. The game has been killed 10 times over on these forums.

Overall 2007 is going to be a better year for MMOs. Some (on paper) exciting games are reaching the end stages of development like: The chronicles of spellborn, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa.

PS: Why do you not like EvE ? Its a nice game.

I suggest Anarchy Online or D&D:O ... both games just pwn and are not quite to be mastered by "cavemen"

What exactly are you looking for Realm?  Star Wars Pre CU to come back? Just like UO pre-trammel, those days are gone, and will probably never be recaptured.

There's actually a lot of games on the horizon that look pretty good...  WAR, TR, GE, AOC to name just a few.... and some are going to be quite different than WOW.....

but most none of them will be like Pre CU.......   unless you can let that game go... you may be doomed to never enjoy another game...

    Vanguard defines cookie cutter grind.

The thing is, the economic success of WoW is making all the COEs go "H44TE!HATEHATEHATEHATEHATEH4TE!!1!!!" and "WAAAANTWAAANTWANAANANT!!!!!1!!" in equal amounts.

    100% agreed with the OP

mmo's today are overall clones of each other, id rather play a good rts like medieval 2

    ...and I do

point is some of us are tired of the same old rpg style of mmo's lately, i want to actively affect and participate in how the world in game changes and progresses or just create my own personal in game adventures, not follow the set path the dev's designed for us =/

Hey there, Mr Wolftenpride, If you consider all MMORPG a clone of each other. What about all these First-person-shooter. Then they are all a clone from the good old DOOM (Before that Wolftenstein) then. All FPS look the same, the interface is the same, about 7-8 differnent weapon etc. Same with RTS - Just build a base and crush the enemy with ya strongest units like tank rush.

Try DDO, it's definitely 'different' than the other mmo's out there. I think DDO stands out more after Vanguard releasing and LOTRO to shortly release.  The combat is AMAZING and some of the dungeons are a sight to behold. The art direction, graphics and attention to detail people are drooling over in LOTRO are also here in DDO..................!

There is a free trial on the website, try it, just to experience the combat and 'have a look at the graphics etc' if nothing else.............

You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.

  • Yea, but the problem with DDO is that you have to be a fan of Dungeon and Dragons universe. If you played the paper n paper roleplay and you really dislike it. Would you then try Dungeon and Dragon Online ?.

i wouldn't say i've been having this exact same problem. but i am fed up of the same tired mechanics being tweaked and given a new, but ultimately pointless, lick of paint.

there are a few exceptions in every genre mentioned so far, with the exception of FPS (though Huxley has the potential to remedy this)

The Dawn of War franchise from THQ completely revolutionised the RTS genre. In no way is it a 'tank rush' rts. try that and you'll soon get wasted. There is a high degree of *gasp* strategy involved in it's mechanics and given it's THQ that's also developing the new Warhammer 40k mmo,  i have high hopes of something fresh from them.

Guild wars, although technically an MMO in it's PvE aspects, reeks of animosity in it's PvP. It is incredibly difficult to get anywhere without a well traveled, group of individuals. And until you find that group, it can quickly become tiresome being rolled over time and time again by the more experienced players. But overall it is so far the furthest from an EQ clone than any other MMO. The last truly ground breaking MMO was Dark Age Of Camelot, i could still go back and play that now, as it's still fresh. If it had a graphical and somewhat more responsive control scheme update, it would be easy to think it's a brand new game when compared to the recently released titles. I haven't played EVE as the genre didn't much interest me, but i'm sure others can vouch for what it brings to the genre.

I'm not going to compare ANYTHING to WoW. Mainly because WoW in itself is the biggest clone of them all. The past 10 years of online gaming combined in a single game that's offered nothing new to seasoned MMORPG players. For new players it's excellent and although it's nothing groundbreaking in it's gameplay or mechanics, it's served it's purpose. Which was to raise the profile of the genre and introduce a whole lot of fresh blood into the MMO scene.

Warhammer Online: Age of reckoning, is the only up and coming MMO that stands to introduce any kind of fresh content to the genre and it cant come quickly enough for me. And i'd truly love for people to read up on it before making any sort of comment. The same old 'looks like WoW', 'cartoony' and 'EA sucks for ruinng X game!' are being thrown about far to frequently, many with absolutely no information to base it on other than screenshots. And many also of which are unaware that WoW was based on the warhammer universe in the first place! I'm tired of the 'realistic' graphics anyway, developers spend too much time and money on them when most players turn them off for raids and large scale events anyway! plus they look rubbish lol. Give me some fun looking avatars any day over some deformed sense of realism.

We need to move away from games that reward basement soap dodgers with accolades purely for how long they have played and not on their ability. The main culprit is the concept that better 'loot' is an acceptable substitute for more content. it's inherantly flawed. Once the loot is obtained, there's no reason to play the game anymore, this is the EXACT problem WoW is facing and why so many people are leaving it and looking for something new to play.

If you want my advice, i'd break out the consoles, maybe play some regular games instead of MMOs. Unless you have a decent guild to play Guild Wars with or can find enjoyment in competing in FPS games, there isn't a whole lot (for me) out there in online games for the moment as far as fresh MMOs go.

Hey bro. If you like SWG pre-CU I recommend DAOC. I noticed you have never played it. Start on the classic servers. Should be fun!!

I'm surprised you haven't tried Guild Wars. There's a reason its campaigns occupy the top 3 spots ;) I say you go ahead and try it...was definitely worth the buy :D

I also have the same problems where the rest of the mmo are nothing but mostly the same thing.. even EVE online but just with a different theme. How I originally got into the mmo thing was my first online pay to play game called Jumpgate. The reason why my decision was to pay for this mmo because it was very different on how the combat and control system was pure twitch based apart from the point and click type of methods.. While playing this mmo, I grew up with just liking that and favoring that over anything else that is point and click and dice rolling.

As of today, my favorite mmo is not even popular anymore as if no one has ever heard about it or even is interested in joining it mainly because outdated graphics and very low online numbers. I used to complain about how mmos are all the same but not anymore because I changed my interest to something different.

I do have some programming knowledge but to only make 3d mostly simple demos that simulate newly innovated mmo concepts(which I have never done as well).

screw mmo's all together, go for a week long camping trip or maybe a hike in the woods and think about stuff rolling around in yer head that may have been buried by trying to live in a make believe world with false sense of gains and no true revelations to any of your problems that we all tend to run from and forget about in the wonderful world of drugs ermmm...i meant mmo's.

You need to play Anarchy Online bro. You can't say you haven't played a good MMORPG till you play that.
