Reasons why LotR:O will fail

Because internet is outlawed or stops working.

That is the only way this game will fail. Why I say this is as follows.

My power supply on my computer died so I got a new tower. New tower doesn't support AGP so I have no video card now. New system is as follows:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (2.2ghz)

Ram: 2 gigs pc2700

Onboard video card: GEforce 6100

I can't play Vanguard anymore because of having no card, but I downloaded LotR and started it up. I set my gfx to recommended lowest settings, but with textures on high and post processing effects on with bloom at about 50%. The game looks amazing for the crappy card I am running and there is almost no lag.

The game plays so solidly and I haven't seen any bugs or even a flappy polygon or warped texture. The quests aren't nearly as hand-holdy as I had thought after playing the intro, you actually have to look around a bit. Must say I'm enjoying it and look forward to getting home tonight and playing some more. LotR's strength is that I have basically no video card and the game looks just fantastic and there are no bugs that I have seen period.

Gonna say congrats to Turbine right now. It's not revolutionary, but the game is going to be a great success because it is solid, playable and fun.

    AMEN!

The game is very solid and a LOT of fun. takes very little to run it well and if you have the power to do it.. play on Ultra High setting.. game looks amazing

Define your version of "fail". Only a couple of games have made it to beta and not launched, and most games that do launch, make money. They will not be failures in this regard.

im guessing he meant failure as a game. not by failure to launch, or failure to make a profit. Im sure even the worst games that made it to launch made some sort of profit.

LOTRO has not only great gameplay and plenty of stuff to do AND look great.. but it has the potential to last for a very long time. If Turbine can keep up with it... this game will be beyond successful

Or the world falls into a depression and people can't even afford food.

I still maintain that this game will be second only to WoW. I know the AoC and WAR folks disagree and those games may do very well - but neither of them will be a blockbuster and I don't think both of them combined will do as well as LoTRO.

They could screw up bigtime and still pull in subs because of its name alone. If it was a quarter of a decent game it would pull in subs. If they changed nothing in the game for the next 4 months it will still sell because of its name. All they have to do is say we are working on a patch to add X land, X mobs, and X quests, and people will stay around for it.

I've been playing since closed beta. And have played the nebie areas for each race and tried my best to do all the quests. And still havent done all of the quests that are available in Breeland. I think that level of content makes it worth buying all by itself!

did you read his whole post?

LOTRO is a great game. I am a ex-Vanguard player (since about 2 days ago), and was very skeptical about LOTRO. Needless to say I pre-ordered, started up a Guardian, and played.

I have only one problem with this game right now:

IT MADE ME LATE FOR WORK THIS MORNING!! Bah..damn addicitons.

Good work Turbine!! Just don't get me fired. :P

a roving band of crazed sea turtles could go beserk, come out of the sea and assault all the land lines carrying internet signals rendering the servers useless. cmon people do i have to think of everything?

First, I'm playing it, pre-ordered 3 copies for me and 2 family members, and I'm LOVING it.

Having said that, there is one big reason that lotro COULD fail...  This is a PVE game. It does have the little battleground type area where some fighting can happen, and that will hold people over a little... but essentially it is a PVE game. Given that, Turbine MUST come out with new content, new areas, etc. at a "REASONABLE" rate. Not sure exactly what 'reasonable' is... but the game will depend on Turbine's ability and speed at producing new content thru time. That's the one 'negative' about a pve mmo...  Here's hoping they pull that off!

I thought that was a given?

If Turbine runs this like they do Ashron's Call, content wise, then there will always be things to do.  Turbine has been big on events, player ideas, and new content for years.  Things could have changed, but I think they have learned a great deal handling the Ashron's Call community.

Glad you all like it.  I got bored in 3 hours of playing.

    1. Go to City
    2. Get all side quests and main quest
    3. Do all side quests
    4. Do Main Quest Fight Boss (With a Fellowship)
    5. Watch the little story
    6. Go to new City
    7. Get all side quests and main quest
    8. Do all side quests
    9. Do Main Quest Fight Boss (With a Fellowship)
    10. Watch the little story

Rinse and Repeat over and over with some crap crafting and carebear Monster Play.

But  this is just my point of view and why I thought it was boring.  If you like it cool.  It's basically all we got out there worth anything right now until AOC or Warhammer comes out.

The thing that always puzzled me about WoW was its lack of substantial and frequent updates.  C'mon, Blizzard is raking in ass-loads of cash and the free updates are embarrassing.  Even with Asheron's Call having something like 100k subs (guess), Turbine has frequent and substantial updates.

I'm guessing LOTRO will be no different. I'm betting you'll see a major update of content (not just class balancing or  bug fixes) within the first month to two months from launch.

you do know that is basically what you do in all games.. not just this one. its a lot of games' definition of "content". and this is only to lvl 15.  besides there are more quests to do and find out in the wilderness as well as the loot factor.

People mention AoC and WAR as this holy grail, this messiah of MMOs that will come and save everyone.... sorry, but it's not going to happen. Not because they will be bad games--I'm sure they will be good. But these games will never live up to the expectations of those who always think the grass is greener in the MMO that they imagine. The reality of the game never lives up to the fantasy one has in their head.

Frankly, I'm tired of waiting for the next 'big thing.'

and i dont know why people complain about PvP or lack thereof in this game. the PvP goes along with the storyline.. it was meant to have all of these races come together for a common good. so the monster play fits right in. it isnt meant to have elf hunters stalking the forest for little hobbits or dwarves. that would defeat the whole purpose of the storyline.

and yes.. WoW had Alliance vs. Horde.. but the PvP doesnt have any purpose except for items and rep. woo. hoo. Its not that good of PvP. I know when i read history about wars and battles that I read about the many conflicts and hardships of a rousing game of capture the flag.

Well... sorry that you got bored with the progression quests in the game. But I did other stuff, like explore the world trying to get traits and new titles, and stand in Comb playing that BLOODY ADDICTIVE lute, learning new songs etc with Turbine's music system - which is a game in itself.

It's a pity that the quest stories didn't grab you though. I thought they were pretty well written, saturated with Tolkien's lore, and varied enough to keep me interested. I really enjoy story-driven RPG's though - baldur's gate, neverwinter nights, KOTOR, planescape torment - so I like the fact that LOTRO has got a good, multi-layered, progressive and solid story behind it all; that adds a sense of adventure to the game for me. It certainly beats the "no reading/thinking required" kill, collect, and deliver quests of other online games. The community is pretty great too - even in open beta!

LOTRO seems to be a great world that I can just kick back and lose myself in from time to time. It will definitely hold me over for a good, long while until WAR comes out. I might end up playing this and WAR if they are as vastly different to each other as it sounds - at least where playstyle is concerned.

For me (and a lot of other players ) the PvP is very  important part of any MMO game. Dont get me wrong the PVE must be great and even if you are hard core PvP player in most cases your game play is 90% of PVE and 10% PvP .  However lack of PvP is just big no no for me.
The best way how to describe it is to compare it :

In relationship the sex part is like 5% of all the time you spend together but lack of it is just no no.

p.s. I think that LOTR is a great PVE game and if they had some FFA PVP server Iam in. For all other careb* khm I meant PVE only players go for it you wont be sorry.

I am going to buy a lifetime membership on LotR when it goes live.... And pre-order War. I just hope that they get the dark everyone is basically self serving and evil and good is about to be crushed atmoshpere that I loved from the PnP rpg.

It HAS PvP, monsterplay is absolutely Player versus Player. If you don't like the concept, fine, but it still HAS PvP. I don't like a lot of PvP concepts, like the one in WoW where you literally have nothing to lose and (xcept new arena) nothing to win, or EvE, where you lose like... everything xcept your character when you die.... Still I'd never argue that they don't have PvP...

Keep it real, this game's gonna own hard and neither WAR nor AoC (the latter is my most anticipated mmo btw) will be able to change that. Never underestimate the license, I know I'm repeating myself, but it's LORD OF THE RINGS. John Smith and his mother know and love this universe ^^

Dyou know how long the sologames movie-franchise crapfests were on No1 "bestselling Videogame" here in Germany? 8-10 weeks if I remember correctly, so yea, you can pretty much sell whatever you like with the LotR Franchise and it'll sell. But besides that, LotRO is a very stable, very fun, in some aspects even original (real music, monsterplay, classes) MMORPG that runs on almost all rigs, more than enough for the vice-throne IMO.
