In spite of people saying swg is dead, its actually not doing that bad

For all of you saying that SWG is dead, swg is not doing that bad concerning sales.

I never claimed SWG was dead....

    Just dead to me.

However it's still a long way from the population of pre-CU, otherwise there would be no need for a sever merge.

It's amazed me also how many people are playing that are not happy with the direction this game is going. I get the sense that any new MMO coming out can have a seriously negative impact on tthe population of SWG. It feels like the current population , which is not particularily huge, is teetering on the edge.

Back in 2000 when EA put Trammel into UO one of the big things said in the uproar about it was "UO will be dead before mid 2001." It was said again back in 2003 with the changes that went in for Age of Shadows...

Tho the Pre-CU will most likely not come back, and yes SWG will never do WoW numbers (remember a TON of the WoW numbers come from the game overseas, and well Blizzard like SOE, NCSoft, EA and other's will lie too.) SWG isn't dead, but right now it is on life support. SOE just needs to really work on the game more then they have been, Chapter 6 will bring in new content, but my big fear is SOE will do a 360 (not the system) and start working on more systems like the GCW System, rather then work on what the players have told them to work on.

Yeah but ask anyone to look with a straight face and say EA didn't destroy the spirit of Ultima Online.... Hell, ask Lord British himself.

I'd still be playing if they'd billed me when I offered the money... but no......

They were good enough to give me 48 hours extra play time so that I could give away all my stuff and credits though. Always found customer service to be excellent contrary to what most people say.

Also the x-fire statistics shows that there is still an active community in SWG, for me however, Ill never go back to SWG, quit right after the NGE - taking my WS business (I was one of the leading WS on Bria) out of business in a single patch. Yeah I remember Coronet and Theed absolutly packed with players pre CU..nice times.

Yeah but ask anyone to look with a straight face and say EA didn't destroy the spirit of Ultima Online.... Hell, ask Lord British himself. UO was slowly becoming a nitch game tho, the whole open world pvp idea that UO had wasn't a 'bad' one however much like other good ideas that mankind has had over the years it just didn't work when you put humans into it. UO's fault was just like SWG's big fault, they redid the game after it had been out for 2 years and the playerbase that EA (or SOE) wanted had gone to *title of MMO here*.

In UO's case it had to be done, it was getting killed by Everquest and later Asheron's Call. For every good honorable Player Killer you had ten kiddie grief players who where just looking for 'phat lewt'. The best question to ask and look at with UO was and most likely will be, where would UO be a year or two down the road with that old system in place? Knowning EA (and believe me I dislike EA alot, tho Command and Conquer 3 rocks and a Wing Commander game is in the works for Xbox Live Arcade... Hey I'll take what I can get with Wing Commander...) UO would have been shut down and it's servers used for The Sims-Online later on...

In SWG's case and what I feel is 'why' SOE went ahead and did the NGE in the first place would almost be the same question. As someone who has played MMO's for a good long time I feel that 'if' the Pre-CU or CU system was still on live rather then the NGE we'd be looking at a game filled with a ton of Alpha Jedi. That was the fault with SWG dare I say in the long run, SOE went for systems that where nice in the short term, bad in the long term. The fault with Jedi was there was no real way to keep the numbers down, you had new Jedi coming in every month. And it's still going on with SWG even now with the new GCW System, short term it's fine and fun. However what's PvP going to be like a few months from now when most of the PvPer's are at General?

This is what I do hope the dev's have learned from SWG's past, you have to think long term with an MMO. Adding new content and 'balanced' things for the players to do is the best way to go about keeping your MMO up and running. Putting in 'Alpha' systems or something that really hasn't be tested fully may help the game in the short term, long term it's going to drive players away.

I got two trials, and both were empty.

I don't think any of those figures are either accurate or have any real point of reference.

Since when does vague numbers from certain selected, minor MMO sellers, ever show anything?

Last time I visited SW:G the streets were so empty that I felt lonely...
In a place I once avoided due to the amount of people and lag.....

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Um its dead to the majority that played it long ago before the CU and NGE..Now those of us that do resub and have free trials know better..Its very empty on many many servers..Even the ones the shills claim are populated..Sad so many post about how great and good it is getting..But yet so many times ive resubbed and saw none of these great feats they say are in..But hey if you love it by all means go play it..No amount of post about it will change facts the Devs themselves posted. Its bad and SOE knows it why they keep trying to put Precu and cu things back in that crappy engine they made..

If the game isnt dead how come it has been made a punching bag in the media? A need for housing purges? A need for server merges? Those reasons alone tell me that the population is very low across the board. Those two things alone in ever otether game ment very low populations. Another fact is that the devs are jumping ship left and right..Heck even TH is moving on..When everyone jumps ship it usually means its sinking..

Completely dead nope its not..Its just not very populated would be a better term..

Well , i know that swg is not like it was in pre-cu, but it has been busier than ever since the changes, i was p[easently surprised to see people spamming like mad outside of tat to buy this or there selling this, and the cantina was absolutly packed with dancers, since i started again after a lil over a year of being gone i am seeing more and more familiar faces coming back, i am on the bria server btw.

When the 300k players come back then it will be alive. Just because it might have gone from 2-5 players is nothing to celebrate lol.If anything it should be on ripleys believe it or not for bieng in existance still.

Wait a second, the guy in that post is judging them by their Amazon.com ranking. And the newest Star Wars Galaxies boxset is listed at #521 in the video game section on Amazon. The site doesn't even let you browse that far back. How is this a sign of the game's success? Can anyone on here name even a hundred games? And there are 520 games that are selling better than SWG. Maybe my standards are a little different than yours but, to me, that's doing pretty f**king awful.

The empty servers just emphasize that point.

Okay I guess my only question is why someone would come to the veterans forum and post this.  Its not like anybody that posts here regularly is going to say "Oh, guess I was wrong.  Where did I leave my disks?"  This is just another post meant to enrage the veteran comunity that is still suffering from the death of the mmo we shared.

True Galaxies hasn't dropped below roughly the 75th percentile (though its close) people tend to forget the huge gap between the top five or so games and the rest. If I showed you the 400 best selling album, or DVD, or film in theaters, you'd all be scoffing at me about how dumb it is.

Besides, its still selling worse than the bulk of A-level designed MMOs with the exception of few.

    LOTRO #5

    WOW #22

Yea, right... Apparently everyone else is the deluded whan they report WOW:BC being the biggest MMO genre seller in history.

That list is as worthless as NGE.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    Hmm.

Do you have proof that it is doing as bad as you think it is? Hard numbers? Sub counts?

    Didn't think so.

Proof i guess some could ask the same of your proof it is growing..Fact is you wouldnt have to defend it so much if it was so great..The game would stand on its own and wouldnt need defending at all..Truth is if you want proof you just have to log in for yourself and make your own judgement..Just based on the few things made public by SOE lets see what we can determine about SWG..

Fact- Talk of server merges means low populations..Every game that merges isnt exactly growing name one game that merged their servers that was growing? Smed wanted to rush this cause he knows empty servers and sparse populations are accross the whole server base..I have logged into those so called populated servers and only seen people in Retuss and no more than 150..But dont matter what i think..

Fact-Housing Purges--Hmm if people were playing why would you need to remove their housing?Um if the game wasnt dead wouldnt we still be playing??If it didnt suck wouldnt those houses be occupied?

Fact-Devs jumping ship left and right even the die hard Thunderchicken moved on-Not a very stable enviroment if all your Team sees that gaping hole in the ship filling with the waters of failure. How many have jumped ship and made sure they added the games is fine to each goodbye post??..Hmm wouldnt need to add that in if the game was doing fine ..If a game is good it wont need reasurance over and over and over..lol...

Fact- Smed himself has made post  stating how bad things are..an how bad things were handled but yet they wont even offer a old version server..Odd to me considering i know that old version server would be full...

Fact- Over the past two years every Gamesite has bashed the game based on SOE massive changes and have stated how empty the game is..

Fact- If you love the game just go play it..

SWG: COA is currently ranked #947 in video games at Amazon.com.  That means it has dropped 502 spots in just 3 days.  My meaningless statistics paint a much grimmer picture than your meaningless statistics.

When a MMO is "actually not doing that bad", the president of the company that is running the game doesn't make statements about needing to "fastrack" server consolidations.  Companies also don't severely slash the operating budget of a ongoing product that is doing well.
