I bought the Good vs Evil edition this Saturday, and have been playing non stop since. I've played Asheron's Call *maxed up to 126 Swashbuckler*, EQ maxed out a Magician and Cleric to level 65, Horizons level 55 Spearman, and WoW *warlock*. I think the past two days I've had more fun than all of the other games combined.
I get mission invites from other players all the time, and everyone I've ran into is nice. I love my mastermind Necro I started playing. I love having 2 pets out killing stuff while I DoT, and Nuke. I grouped with two other masterminds, and we did missions for about 5-6 hours nonstop tearing through them. I read prior to buying this the game was kind of boring, and was just a grind. Well, what game is not a grind??
Any MMO I played involved going up to a guy, and him telling you to go out and do something then come see him afterwards. First time I zoned in out of the tutorial some guy walked up to me and gave me 7,000 infamy so I could buy inspirations!!! The character customization is awesome.
I had a lot of friends trying to get me to come back to WoW, and I'm glad I did not. I played a month of WoW, and the past two days of CoV is more fun. It gets old playing the same fantasty Cleric/Warrior/Shaman/Druid crap over and over and over. This is a much needed breath of fresh air.
This game is a blast, give it a try if you are questioning it. I've played a lot of MMO's and this is one of the best, and most enjoyable experiences I've had. As for a pet class, the mastermind blows the EQ Magician/Beastlord, or WoW Warlock out of the water. It's the funnest pet class I've ever played.
Games played:
EQ1: 65 Cleric, 65 Magician *max level at the time*
Asheron's Call: 126 Swashbuckler
Horizons: 65/35/ Spearman/Blacksmith
WoW: 31 Warlock

Yes, that sounds like my first experience with the City of games as well. Much more friendly community than the average, though I still don't recommend you spend too much time on the forums if you value your health. Go to the forums only if you're going to your Server forum (Virtue in my case) or if you need specific information on a power (usually best to hit the Player Guides area for that).
The thing that newbies need to keep in mind is that it gets old to see the same content over and over, and the game highly encourages alts. To that end, I've personally burned through all of the level 1-30 content on both sides by and large. Having played the game for several years (veteran rewards are nice I guess, but...I'd rather have my Kheldian!), I just don't have much left to see. So I am waiting for the release of Issue 9 and all of the new stuff it'll be doing to the game.
Oh, one last warning though. Be careful if you choose to play a Scrapper or Brute. You may never be the same again. ;p

well the term grind comes from repetitive game play...
Does Guild Wars have repeditive game play?

Yes it is a good game, I prefer the hero side, with lvl 50's on both. The pvp is good, nicely balanced, there isn't a class that can't be beat, everyone has a weakness when solo. When in a group, either side, and the group fights as a unit... that's when the fun begins.
Base raids are interesting, when deciding which Supergroup to join, just make sure they have similar interests. If you like to pvp, find one that enjoys pvp/base raids. This makes the game much more diverse.
The Devs have done a really good job in making the game better, which seems rare these days in the mmo world, when the focus is nerfing. When I have written an in game ticket for help; twice I was contacted by a support specialist in game within 10 minutes, and resolved my issues. Some of the best customer support I have experienced.
The game can get boring if you concentrate on one aspect of the experience. My advice is to try all the different aspects. Badge hunting became addicting for me.
Have fun.

Firstly, there's no need to be rude. If your attitude is a reflection of the CoV community I'll never play it.Secondly, no, it does not have grind. The definition for grind by wikipedia is "Grinding : To kill relatively weaker creatures repetitively over a long period of time.[1] This is often done to level a character, improve a skill or gain money." Guild Wars has a low level cap, you do not need to kill creatures repetitively to level up or gain skill. If you have a brain on your head you do not need to even do it for money.
OP asked the question, I answered it. Grow up and deal with it
On another note, I loved the missions I did yesterday in the Port City *2nd zone* in CoV. I did a mission for this crime boss that had me track down a book that the Hellions had.
Was a 4-5 part mission, and was a blast. So much better than the typical "Go kill 50 mobs, and bring me item A". Plus I got this awesome jetpack that I fly around with. So easy to get around in this game compared to others where you have to run for 15 minutes, or ride a Gryphon for 5-10 minutes.
Only cons that I've had in this game is some lag issues. I play on the most populated server though. I chose it because it has more players, so I'll deal with it. I may need to add some RAM. I'm only running a 3700+ Clawhammer, 1024MB of Ram, and a 7600 GT.
It's nothing like Horizon's lag, but then again nothing is that bad
Guild Wars I enjoyed for a while, but dropped after I'd beaten all of the campaigns and collected all of the 15k armours I wanted. Just wasn't much left for me to do except PvP, where I'd be accused of cheating, hacking, and general tomfoolery. Lawl on them, I'm a Beastmaster and have been since beta. ::chuckles::
The story arcs are one of the biggest reasons to play PvE in my opinion. The very earliest you can fight an Archvillain as a hero is in your low 20's, where you can accept a mission that involves you investigating some unusual kidnappings and that eventually leads to taking on Dr. Vahzilok himself. Very epic battle, that one.
Performance can be a bit rough, especially if you're redside (villains), because it's a newer game in all technicality and therefore uses more bells and whistles. My own system is getting pretty dated these days and while it can run the game, I have to do some serious optimization and toning of world settings in order to get a decent FPS. It's not usually quite as bad blueside, but we do what we can. The player guides forum has guides on what features you can adjust in order to improve performance if you're feeling too much lag.
Edit: Oh, most populated server is Justice I believe. Not my preference as I'm a roleplayer, and Virtue is the unofficial RP server (and thus where I play). Hopefully you're enjoying yourself and making several friends. ^.^
Hmm,From what I was told the pvp base raids r on hold due to some lame excuse that all supergroup members are prevented from goining on missions during a raid or base def. which imo is a good idea. But the carebears cried about it so now dev's are saying it's a bug.The pvp is usually 20 heros waiting to jump 3 villians. The lag in this game is horrendous, well over 300ms pings from the midwest.Thats enough to cause ping pong effect routinely.I have never seen that in a pay to play game.In 8 player pve my sli 7800,amd 64 3500+,2 mb ddr400 dual channel, with 2 wd 10k rpm raptors in raid 0,has been brought to less than 5 frames per second.I think my acct is on hold because Im on vacation and was going to decide when I get back,if issue 9 is out wether to renew.
I made a similiar post on the official forum and within hours the entire thread "is cov dying" which wasn't even my thread vanished.
I think since issue 8 there is a BUG in base raiding. But it might be our base because other Villain SG's are still base raiding with no problems. Our last base raid we fought Heroes. After we defeated their first wave of atttack, they regrouped and entered our base the same time. 16 heroes spawning into our base the same time is not good. It Booted all off us villains out. And this wasn't just a regular Boot..It was a DC where you have to verify images and all. Heroes were able to drop pylons and WIN.
PVP in Freedom server is pretty active. A well organized villain team can beat heroes even when outnumbered 2 to 1 in PVP zones. The arena is a different story, Heroes will almost always beat villains. Last night I spent a couple of hours in RV, it was fun. You'll find 30+ PVPers on nights. Even more on weekends.
For all you interested in PVP. Justice for All league SG is hosting an event 2:00 p.m. pst (5:00 p.m. est) on 04/21 on Freedom.. called PVP 101 education event. Top PVPers are going to help out those who want to get into PVP. Lots of good stuff there
Instant base raids are working as they always have been. There may or may not be technical glitches but any two SGs/VGs can plan a raid for any time if they both agree. These are "practice raids" you might say, and any items destroyed are returned at the end of the raid.
The way the Cathedral of Pain is supposed to work, when you have an Item of Power you have to agree to make your base raidable at certain times. The IoP owners don't have the option to say no, they have to accept a raid during that time. Any items destroyed are gone (though a chance exists to recover in the workroom). And if the IoP's anchors are destroyed, the attackers get it.
The CoP is not working so the "real" raids don't work. But instant raids, the practice ones, are still possible.

Other than that *which isn't a big con* I am having a blast still. I am breezing through missions destroying everything will relative ease so far. It's still a challenge, but this Mastermind is a very powerful class to play it seems. *maybe not for PVP but oh well*.
Glad you are having fun. MMs are almost definaly the best class for solo PvE. PvP they can be deadly depending on who they are teams with.
Best MMO out there, definitely.
- Sidekick/Lackey (Examplar/Malefactor to a lesser extand, but something is missing on the other way around)
- Real progression, a level 1 take on 2 minions of it levels...a level 50 can take on 10 minions, 3 lieutnants, 1 bosse and 1 elite boss; all levels 52. You evolves, you become stronger, in every possible way.
- Grouping and raiding endgame, you pick whichever you prefer, as a player...
- Endgames aren't crushing if you don't like them, a player that doesn't do it ever is formidable, same hps, same AC, same damage on attacks...yet, for the players with tons of time, the endgame still improve your character, it is like adding more slots with heavy restriction on what you can add, so usually they will have a slightly faster refresh on attacks, less endurance cost and so on, while in solo these difference would be huge, in group they are usually trivials with all the buffs you receive anyway...as you have plenty endurance in group...and your powers refresh extremely fast while grouped!
- Incredible powers diversities....sooo many choices to pick from, even if a player would pick the same primary and the same secondary sets, then are unlikely to pick the same alternatives powers...and may even not pick the same in primary or secondary, and definitely won't slot it the same way you do...there are over 125 possible combos of primary/secondary, and each one of them can be fined tuned the way you want.
- Characters outlook, it costume, it size...simply amazing.
- Instancing as much as you want, while the game world exist and is big enough for you to explore and check it out, at warp speed or as a real explorer, walking, you pick.
- Full vertical movement
- 4 travels powers and boats/metro/copters between zones....awesome...just awesome!
- Auto-level-to X in some zones, so every player is of the said level in a particuliar zone, yeah higher character still keep the slotting of better enhancements and more slots, but still, everyone is of the same level, which make it interesting in these zones...yet you can avoid these zones if you don't like it that way.
- EPIC AT coming with I10 most likely...*start drooling*!
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
Glad that you are still enjoying the game. Nearly everyone agrees that there are some lag issues with this game and that they are worse with a new release and slowly get better. There are several ways to possibly decrease your lag issues including making certain you have over 1mb RAM. There was also a suggestion to turn off the game sound and that solves much of the lag issues.
Masterminds are the easiest to solo because they are a ready made team. Don't forget to try some of the other character types. One of the beauties of the game is the dynamic character creation system.
