Why are many people still addicted to STAR WARS GALAXIES (pre-CU)?...will there ever be another?

Can anyone explain.....what "IT" is or in this case was???

The game (pre-CU) has been gone for 2 years now and I still have a strong desire to play that little bugged out gem! Everytime I come here I see post after post about SWG. I see posts about classic servers, SWG 2, and KOTOR ONLINE. Why does everyone still love this game so....I don't understand. What is the Magic that made that game so addictive and fun????

It seems that if there were enough people like us around. The market would demand a return of replacement of a Pre-CU SWG.  I wonder if we will ever see a MMORPG that would bring that magic back. I would give almost anything to have the fun I had with that game again...SO WHAT WAS IT ?????

What made SWG so special to so many and will we ever see a game like that again?

Could be it wasnt a me too game it allowed player options galore..That and the combat was so involved and not just about gear..Players given the choice to do what they wanted,be whatever they wanted..Then the choice to change profession without starting over from 0...One of the best to date crafting systems in any MMO..I could go on and on but in reality it had it all except competant Devs who didnt get it...

From what I've been reading, the Lucas Arts is potentially looking to license SWG to a new developer.  If that is indeed the case, you just may get to have what you are looking for.

That rumor has been around for almost three years. Do you have anything concrete to back that up? I'd be stoked to hear it. Pre-cu FTW!

CU and pre cu where not that differnt mains divergence was no more totally overpowered buffs and requirement of more armor. I like CU as much as pre-CU .... well not as much but it was not that bad.

the real reason is that becuase you can't play it anymore. REally if people could they would discover its flaws etc, instead they just remeber the feeling they had most of the time.

I would play SWG if pre-cu or cu was back otu tho, NGE is REALYY bad. and CU wasn't grand.

Nothing more that the pieces of news that pop up now and again toying with the possibility.

Until then, I suppose you will have to play SWG in its current form, or something else.

No mmo's for me these days, although I have been doing the world tour for LOTR. Completely unlike Pre-CU SWG, and rather boring.

I would, given the opportunity, pay for a Pre-CU server subscription. Let us hope that SOE will someday hear our 2-year old cries for such a thing, and either give us our wishes, or get on to SWG2 and make it like the initial retail SWG we all loved so much.

    Yes...

But what is the element that SWG had that no MMORPG has cloned to date? What is that one thing that keeps us wanting it back. What is it????...I just can't put my finger on it.

What i loved with pre-cu was:

    SKILLSYSTEM:

Beeing able to choose exacly the proffessions that suited me and the ability to change them if my mood changed.

    CRAFTINGSYSTEM:

Lets face it, It was gold.  The range of quality of your resources and the experimenting made up for a realy complex crafting.

    SOCIAL INTERACTION:

You had to interact with people, battle fatigue, wounds, deseaces, 10 minutes shuttle wait, player cities.

There were bugs and the graphic engine wasn´t the greatest but most of the game mechanics made up for it tenfold.

Community is what really made that game great. From rivalries between rebs and gimps to chatting up that hot green twi in the cantina. It was all about the community. Gameplay wasn't always the greatest. Bugs were horrendous (still have a picture of swoop day), even the crafting system had flaws (like factories) but still community held it all together ...and it was a star wars community at that. Before the dark times!

I highly doubt that in the near future any game will make a player based economy... All the games currently out or coming out having crap for crafting.... Uniqueness is what SWG offered and now that it's gone.. Ultima Online is the only game to have it now.

Fall Earth guys. It looks like NGE combat system done right, mixed with the pre-cu stuff. (No classes, built around crafting, tons of skills)

I have not seen Fallen Earths crafting system but so far their graphics are meh... I hope they come out with a bang up game, I really do... I just doubt they will have an in depth enough crafting system to sustain a player ran economy.

I heard there were a lot of resources collecting and such. I'm not sure. And yes the graphics are pretty meh, but I could careless as long as it's fn

I guess you are right...It's hard to determine these days.  When I log in I see almost no one these days.

I really am finding it hard to get into another game besides pre-cu swg. it "ruined my taste" for mmo's in a good way. So im trying 9Dragons now... Its okay

That's what I've been hearing...  with any luck that will be the case, and it will be done right.  I'd love for there to be a Star Wars MMO which is done right.  I was never really happy with SWG... it didn't really capture the feel of the movies IMHO.

When will you people learn.  NGE was not brought about by the devs, it was the suits who thought they knew better.

Go read Ralph Kostner's site sometime, it has a wealth of knowledge about how they were told to do it with no options.

From what a lot of the people I knew in SWG-PreCU was the Social interaction.  How many people in WoW do you see hanging around the "Inn" in Ironforge?  Only those who just stoned there and are AFK.

Now, go into SWG (obviously pre-cu when we had the most ppl on all the servers) and you'll see the cantina's in Theed, Coronet, so jam packed just hanging around, chatting it up, flirting, showing off guns that were crafted, you name it.  We hung around and did it.

Now let's compare ohhhhhhh, let's just grab a random game out of thin air.. say........................ WoW.  If you hang around in one spot in there you'll probably end up with A.  Eye strain from staring at NOTHING, B. WHispers out the wazzu for someone wanting you to take them through Wailing caverns, or C.  200 duel requests, (150 from the same person, and the other 50 from ppl 20 lvl's higher than you).

SWG pre-cu was SKill based not LEvel based.  You didn't KNOW how skilled someone was unless they let you know (either through title or conversation).  Sure it was a grind based game but it was the unique aspects of it that made it such a hit.

    Crafting:

    • Experimentation
    • Resources making all the difference in outcome
    • custom naming
    • numerous options
    • Coloring of armor to make a semi-unique statement
    • enhancements (krayt tissues, rancor bile, etc)
    • Many unique items crafted and the various ways to get the ingredients

    Social:

    • Overall community was there to have fun and chat it up, I often described it to my wife as mIRC with graphics
    • Guild management could have been better but it was good none the less
    • Player HOusing, even before player cities we could host parties in our own house and decorate it
    • Cantina's and player cantina's to watch dancers, cure fatigue, flirt with others

I'm sure I can go on and on about the best aspects of pre-cu compared to current mmo's.  SOme of these things still exist but lets face it, they aren't the same.

Another thing we need to remember when bashing SOE (I for one hate them for ruining the game but when hating them we need to remember this) is this.... "Careful what you wish for or you just might get it"

Let me explain, a lot of changes they made to the game engine were resutls of players complaining.  "TKM is to overpowered, he pwnt me, nerf CH, nerf Commando, WAA WAA WAA, etc etc etc"

A lot of what ppl complained about had some impact of the changes that SOE made.  I've often posted in the SWG forums "Careful what you wish for cuz you might get it" and sure nuff.  We got it, and the ppl complaining COMPLAINED more about the changes they wanted done in the first place.

NOW, IMO what they should have done was fix the existing problems at hand.  Kept fixing those, the piece by piece and taken their time making changes, properly testing, proper research whether a change would benifit the WHOLE and not the ONE.

Anyway, I for one am waiting on the next game that's similar comes around.  SWG Pre-CU was my home for a long time and made lots of long lasting friendships there.  When I logged in for Cu I gave it my best shot and said "this isn't so bad, not great but not bad" then came NGE and I said, "that's it, Im out."

threads like this make me think mmorpgers really are hard done by. A game players once enjoyed and then altered so as to alienate players. DAoC, EQ, SWG and not to mention games that players were enjoying to be shut down;- E& B and AC2. Who would play mmorpgs eh?
