But is WAR playing it right? Will they hype themselves out of the market like many other MMO's. People can only take so much hype for so long before they lose interest and find something else, maybe the hidden gem which has dodged the hype meters until release.
Lets just watch and see, speculation is nothing compared to reality
Brounding, did healforfood say that not doing the engine,or IP,or funding in house was a bad thing? Please avoid drawing unsubtanciated conclusions.
I can't see anywhere where/how he/she cares the game is made.Personally I could care less if it was made in a Beijing political prison camp so long as it works and comes out on time.btw your analogy is so innovative compared to healforfoods.Instead of having your neighbor build you a car(which can take almost indefinately, but ill take your word it averages 5 years) you order it from the factory(lol, yah you just call the ford river rogue plant in dearborn direct, dah),you can't order a car factory direct you have to go to a dealer to order it.
Lesson learned from Vanguard, always beta test it before u buy. Too many viral marketing and a$$ kisser now a day, u cant really trust anyone's word.
Better still, never pre-order and buy the game after release. Sure you may miss the initial rush, but give the huge crush on servers that might not be such a bad thing.
Of course, this doesn't apply if you get into the beta can get a chance to check out the game beforehand. I actually have to give credit to Turbine for doing their World Tour of LotRO, it's a great way for people to look at the game and see if they want to put down the money for it. I'm not one of them, but that's just my personal tastes, I can see people who would probably enjoy that game and now they don't have to worry about getting ripped off if they pre-order.
It would be nice if those kind of 'Tours' became a standard practice in the industry though I've heard that EA Mythic won't be doing that with WAR.

They won't be. Sanya has specifically said they will not be running a traditional open beta where anyone with Internet access can download the game and play.
Taken from the WAR Herald:
Final Beta: No NDA. Because there is no NDA, people often refer to this as "open beta." But I wanted to be really clear with you guys - we are not planning the kind of open beta where everyone with internet access can download the game and hop in. That's nutty. Right now, we are tentatively considering having everyone who pre-orders the game invited to this phase of beta. This phase will also invite winners from our big media promotions. STARTS: TENTATIVE DATE: Summer 2007
You can find it in the November 10, 2006 post titled Beta Defined at www.warherald.com

I think this will be a trend for games that are reasonable confident of success, they'll restrict the final beta to people who pre-order....

I don't think Mythic knows when the game will be done.Major races still seem to be incomplete. My guess....no later than late November the game's getting kicked out the door to the public...what ever the state of polish is.
you can test a game for 10 years, and they will still need a patch 2 weeks later.Warhammer newsletter is not "the internal classified report on the progress of WAR".Mythic doesn't know when thier game is being released ,EA want's to surprise the mythic staff.
Why is it so unbelievable that the largest game company, with an experienced developer,an IP,and a licensed game engine that they already use in thier other game.Cannot get a product out in time. This isnt a manned mission to Mars you know.
If they were making some out of the blue in house engine, then ide be sceptical.
But even with Mythic working efficiently at lightning speeds, the game world is looking to be huge and complex. 6 races, 24 classes, 33 zones, 33+ scenarioes, 6 cities, a few large dungeons and probably tons of instances.
That dont sound like alot of work?
-Every class need exclusive models, sounds, textures, animations, a huge veriety of gear (that also needs to be modeled, textured and balanced) and a bunch of spells, skills and abileties of various forms. All that also needs to be carefully balanced (relative balance, as real balance in a game like this will never exist), witch is next to impossible.
-Every zone needs to be filled with content. Monsters, towns, quests, RvR area etc. And all this also has to be balanced up against everything else.
-Not to mention how much work it has to be to make all the scenarioes, cities and dungeons.
And I havent even mentioned game mecanics, UI, lore, RvR, weather etc. The list goes on.
Dont come saying that making MMOs isnt rocket science (You know that rocket science is just a grade of difficulty right? It goes like this: easy, moderate, hard and rocket science ^^). MMOs are easily most difficult type of game to develop.
What would be an overwhelming amount of work in the eye's of one,are simple step,by step tasks for others.
The lore is already made by gdw.the mechanics by emergent tech. There's tons of graphics people looking for work.I wouldn't be surprised if EA can reallocate some,or just outsource more if needed.
You know it would really be nice for once to see a gamer that complains about delays and everything under the sun to actually freaking design a game themselves. Most of these people work 15+ hour days and the overhead far exceeds 20-30 million. Every gamer has the ultimate freaking answer but I have yet to see one build the ultimate MMO. I have faith in this project and Mythic anyhow. DAOC was one of the best MMO's made and is still a top ranker six years later.

Be careful with over enthusiastic hype and over extended expectations. I suggest wait until there is something solid on this game before jumping on any fan wagon.

15 hours a day, since when has EA gotten so soft. I did hear EA implemented Flex time, you can work any schedule you want as long as it adds up to 84 hrs a week. Most people could care less when they go in wal-mart what sweat shop what product comes from.If its any concillation EA is pushing hard for more H1B visa workers and pushing more work offshore. So alot of EA workers will get a nice long vacation by the middle of next year.

Its not a simple step by step process for anyone even experienced developers. The lore and the mechanics may be written out on paper but the programmers still have to code it, build it in the compiler (which could take up to hours for a build if the project is big enough), and test it that it basically works before sending it out for more testing. There's always something that has to be tweaked or rewritten or changed because its not working the way it should. There's always someone sick or injured or on vacation who's work has to go unaccounted for (or reassigned) until they return.
Hell even with the graphics engine written by someone else you don't just plug n play. You still have to program an application around it that uses it. You still have to program interfaces over the interfaces they program so it does what you want when you want.
Artists don't just slap polygons together and say "hey this model is ready" one model could take an entire day or several days depending on how complex it needs to be. Animators have to repeatedly test and test and test to make sure the animation is working right and tied to the right models.
There may be tons of 'graphics' people looking for work but ever think they're looking for work because they're not up to the standards of the game industry? That maybe they can model and animate but they can't do it fast, efficient and make it look good?
Hell the two artists i work with do a great job for what we do but they're definitly not up to par with people who make and animate models for games. Even EA doesn't just 'reallocate' work' or outsource work to people who don't work within the team dynamic, your workers need to all get along and work well to some degree otherwise ... well there's chaos!
A typical game team not counting who's hired on aroundlaunch to help maintain is maybe at most 20 - 30 people per game and definitly less if its a smaller game otherwise the costs would get even more outrageous then they already are!

I'd like some links to prove this perposterous theory. EA maybe a slave driver but outsourcing to visa workers thats usually not how its done in the game industry not even in Japan otherwise you get substandard products. And its definitly not the case down in here Florida where they're constantly scurrying for new programmers from some of the schools here.

game designers were gods in the 80's and 90's.But now are treated like dogs. You said they are scurrying for programmers in of all places Fla. ,you just confirmed the criteria a business has to meet to hire H1B vista workers.I could spend a few hours finding out how many EA has.But It wont tell me what unit without going deeper.Weather EA uses the savings from these HIB workers, which are fairly common in all major fields now.To push more local assests into anther project,is nothing more then coorperate juggling imo.If EA doesn't send idle employee's to other projects, what do they do with them, just downsize them when they are done.
