Warhammer Online ship date Q1 2008

Taken from the recent news letter:

"We have made the decision to move our ship date for the US and Europe to the first quarter of 2008. (Release dates for Asia will be announced at a later date.) Since our acquisition by EA, we have been afforded many wonderful development opportunities and we plan to take full advantage of everything that is available. This includes taking several additional months to make the best MMORPG possible."

I'd much rather play a game that is well developed and released a few months later after their rough projection at first, then have less fun then watching paint dry. I hope this just means more time for beta!

Here is why they pushed it back, something I feel that it's of the utmost importance to note in a release date push:

At this time we have completed most of the work on our first racial pairing – Dwarfs and Greenskins – and the team is now building Empire and Chaos. These new zones really kick butt and the team did a fantastic job of incorporating the feel of war and Warhammer into these areas. This racial pairing is the embodiment of all that I hoped for when we made the decision to partner with GW.

However, when we looked back at our work on the Dwarf and Greenskin pairing, we could not say the same thing. While these areas were good, they were not great and glorious. We have always said that WAR was going to be great and we will not settle for anything less. So the team has gone back to our initial pairing and conducted an intense review of their work. They have implemented new ideas and applied all that they have learned over the past nine months. What has already emerged from this dedicated time of focused polish is nothing short of spectacular. In the Dwarf and Greenskin zones there is now more war, more Warhammer, and more of what makes WAR great.

By extending our development time, we’ll be able to do these in-depth reviews several times prior to launch to ensure all areas of WAR benefit from the experience of ongoing development. EA is totally supportive of our decision and are behind us 100%. We all believe WAR will be the next great MMORPG and being part of EA affords us the time we need to make it so. It is EA’s ongoing commitment to quality that will allow us, and other EA studios, to deliver great games, now and in the future.

The pushed release date isn't because of anything other than Mythic wanted to go back over their work on the Dwarves and Greenskins and make it look like the work they did on the Empire and Chaos. It's only been two years in development and they are way ahead of where other MMO developers were at the 2 year mark. That's why I am ok with the pushed back release date. The fact they want to go back over their racial pairings and improve them can only mean good things.

I'm really glad that EA/Mythic is thinking of something alot of others don't.... the game, content and players. I'm sure if they halfed ass the entire game, it could be out in Q3 07.Mythic "We care and it shows." (not offical slogan but it's true) Man I want to play WAR so bad.... maybe Beta 1 will be Mid Q3 (Aug)?

My guess is: Beta (starts) around Aug or Sep. Stree Test in Nov or sooner (multi stress test also). Release Feb-March, Jan would be ideal for the holidays and all, but a month or two wont hurt, it will only do good.

I will have to agree, if the developer says he needs more time then it is our job as community to support them 100% on this. It is in our best interests to get a solid game and not a half assed MMO that we tend to see so many of now days.

It sucks but I'd rather have them do it right to begin with and take a little more time than have it be half-assed *cough*Vanguard*cough* and out early.

Cheers to the Mythic crew for making the choice now to make the game as solid as humanly possible.

I thought they just pushed it back cause Paul knocked over something important while flailing his arms around during a podcast.  But yeah, I don't mind sitting around another couple months.  At least now the release won't interfere with hunting season (a sad justification, but a good distraction while I wait for my next mmo fix).

Its good they announced the delay this far in advance..nothing wrong with needing more time to work on your product.  Its annoying with you announce delay after delay close to the original release date...or..release a game that is not ready for launch.

What they are doing here is increasing my "hype" of this one...it seems to be handled well and the community that is awaiting the game is being informed early that they some more time..thats the way to do it.

When your financially backed by the guru of gaming (Electronic Arts) you can afford to have a pushed back release date.  I think this decision by EA-Mythic is very well supported and will only increase its sucess.

On a more personall note, Im sick of half finished games being released.  Take the time and finish the game.  I relize that game developers run out of funds...  All that shows is poor management and terrible financial planning.

Cheers to Mythic for this decision.

I work for a pretty major (not really major..but pretty major) software company that has a lot of competition for our slice of the pie.  I am not a part of development..nor very upper management that makes corporate decisions but I am seeing a software company trend to just rush out products and try to lure in buyers even if you are not delivering what was advertised.

If the competition has a new product coming out...you must as well...even if they planned ahead and are more prepared for launch..no I dont agree with this..but it seems to be the way a lot of the software world works.

From working in a setting like that...I am glad WAR is pushing back their launch, yeah it sucks to wait longer...but there is a bad trend with software lately that is to promise much and deliver little...you may make a quick buck but you wont compete in the long run.

Why?  I think they look fine.  I mean, why make a game with such superb graphics that the only people that can enjoy it are the ones with super computers?

LOL!   You could actually see that happening :)

I'm also fine with Mythic delaying the release to give them more time to develop and polish.    We've all seen what happens to MMORPGs when they are released before they're ready, I think the community has realized that it's in their best interest to wait until a game is finished (so long as the Developers know what they're doing and Mythic certainly seems to)

I will admit I was disappointed to read that announcement but in the end we all know the delay will help to make WAR a better game.

bah,People get mad when thier pizza is twenty minutes late, yet they don't mind their entertainment being 6 months late.I personally dont beleive it's just one pairings graphics that caused this decision.Imo they may be rethinking group size, classes, and the strategic rvr system as a whole. If there doing that then I guess they had no choice.Thanyou Myhic I lost all my bets for realease date.so q1 08 is what, march 30 '08. almost a year from now.

Woah chill out kid, this is a good thing. I'm glad to see a company announce a pushback way way before the release of the game instead of a month before it is supposed to be released. This is a PLANNED pushback and its not because of setbacks but because they feel they can make the game better in areas they already been over.

I wish alot of games had this much enthuasiasm.

I'm suprised to see such a good move by EA but since its EA-Mythic I'm not that suprised. Mythic is pretty much getting all control over the project and EA just wants to profit off of it. Mythic is the MMO maker not EA =).

Oh and your Pizza analogy is horrible.

People pay for the Pizza first, then expect it to be on time.

We havn't payed for jack yet on WAR.

Ha ha no wonder EA is giving them time after seeing the Vanguard Berezina.

    My addiction History:
    >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
    >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
    >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

I dont need a press pass to know why they would push it back. After I saw empire vs chaos adn then looked back at "dwarves vs orks" I knew they wouldnt be bete testing in the summer like plaaned before.

All of the "wow clone" cries stoped when they changed the graphics to what you see now with Empire. Now insted of people saying "this looks like wow" they are saying "this game looks like whooooaa!!"

nothing like getting boost from partnering with a company that has a $16,267,956,210 market value to improve a game eh?

    This is good to hear.

Seems that companies may be listening and learning from others mistakes / successes (VG / LotRO).

Just need to look at SWG to see what happens to a game that is released unfinished.

Im glad Mythic are delaying WAR, because simply if it needs delayed, it needs delayed. We as the consumer will be better off for it.

    So  Mythic.
