I am gonna chuck in another 2 pence worth.
I think that this system is just asking for abuse, because the powergamers are gonna own all the castles (eventually) and they are gonna have huge taxes and huge armies and ruin the game for most others.
I dont know how ownership of castles is going to work, but i imagine whoever is highest level will win the fight and thus take ownership, therefore what i just said will happen.
If taxes are too high, people will move on, reducing income, and reducing the size of any potential player army, so such a Baron would be impotent, and easily defeated by a better loved Baron. There are other checks and balances, but players themselves will have a powerful influence on who does well.
Each Baron will most probably specialize in gaining SXP (social experience) over FXP (fighting experience) therefore developing political skills and abilities over normal combat skills. They of course will be people that spend a lot of time in game to maintain their stronghold, but this can only be done with the goodwill of other players interested in defending and developing that stronghold. This is a group effort, and no "power-gamer" on his own will ever succeed!
Originally posted by stephen_sof lol 10,000 players peek hours thats way to low probly 100,000 or so on peak hours for a bit untill the game gets more players allready about 100,000 signed up for beta.
Well beta signing means nada.Since all reasonable mmorpg have over 100k people signing. It is free! Also you have people that sign like 20 times to increase their chances.
I like the look for DnL but like been stated it has strong competition. So if the live version can get 20,000 to 30,000 peak time its great news.100,000 people at peak time would mean this game would have close to 200,000 accounts altogether.Which would be great but doubt DnL can achieve it.
i don't think either that there will be large scale abuse of this system because you are freely to decide if you want your char able to fight when you are not online.
So if you don't wanna they can't use you and if a certain lord is rude everybody leaves and throw him off his trone so he is left empty handed.
One day all will die, surely you but never I.

I will also add that barons and the other higher nobles will be elected. Once an alignment takes over a majority of the fortresses in a barony the fortress owners of the majority alignment will elect its baron (thereby kicking out the baron of the opposite alignment). Of course to be a baron a character must have the skills and those skills are derived from the social experience points that are only gained from helping the community (like fighting MOBs that raid the towns, supplying mana fountains, etc.)
Not posted much on here as no one really seemed intrested in discussing DnL in the past, but glad to see some threads on it now. I probably know as much as anyone, (outside of NPCube and Farlan) about the game, will try and settle some things.
As was posted, there will be no underwater cities in the game, at least for launch. Lack of time and a focus on more important features is the reason for this. There will only be a fraction of the quoted total number of barronies, fortresses etc with launch, will depend on the number of players that are in the game. As was said GM's will have a huge control over the game, and will be employed full time by farlan entertainment to do the job.
I was recently in LA as a guest of Farlan Entertainment, and these guys really know what they are doing and have big plans, you aint seen nothing yet.
Also as one of the few people who can actually say they have tried the game (through playing a version at E3), what you see in the video is what it is, truly awe-inspiring. Sure ive missed some points I wanted to correct when reading over the threads..... but this will do for now
Also visit SoF site ( www.sofdnl.com) for the E3 DnL CD, will be up in its entirity very soon
Im sure they wont have more than 1 or 2 servers because of the size of the world, and it is going to be popular due to its PvP, and overall uniqueness.
Will only ever be one world, one ganareth, one story. If it gets more popular, they add more hardware to their server farm and can then cram mroe poeple into a smaller space. Or increase the land-mass. Either works. They also use a very nice server technoology from big-world( www.bigworldtech.com ) which resizes the area one server controls depending on the amount of poeple are in it. So an emptyish area will be one server controlling a massive landspace, where in a large town, it could be 5 diffrent servers covering a very small area each etc. Alot more information and a better description on the site.
is this the same game that uses your char as an NPC to defend your fortress when you're offline? Are NPCs inhabiting these castles for color? Perhaps they could defend their homes... I mean, somebody has to be in those fortresses when you first log on, right?
Yes there will be NPC scripting for when you either experiance lag, or are not online. But only for a set amount of time. Also you will have the same risks if you do this as you would normally, if you leave yourself in the command of your leader and die, you will suffer the same as if you dies when you were controlling your character.
So, if you´re in a high social position, you´ll be able to make war with other prices or thinks like that, managing an army of players. No one knows how will this run, but Devs have said it a lot of times. So, everyone can try to make a really big army and start conquering all the kingdoms.
We did get info on this at E3, it may be released in an article twill will be releasing (hopefully soon) but it is still undergoing approval by the guys at NP3. If it's not included they may wish to keep it quiet a little longer.
What is up with this stupid 2 Degrees download client BS???
They are using it now as a test for a future release of their game client. Ive had no problems with it so far. If there are problems with mozilla I'll pass on your concerns to the developers.
I think that this system is just asking for abuse, because the powergamers are gonna own all the castles (eventually) and they are gonna have huge taxes and huge armies and ruin the game for most others.
The developers are very aware of some possible problems, and powers may be given to GM's to deal with problems in this area. However there is alays dark vs Light, so you can only get so powerful
I dont know how ownership of castles is going to work, but i imagine whoever is highest level will win the fight and thus take ownership, therefore what i just said will happen.
Ownership of castles will work through initial seazing of a castle, and then through removing the current leader in one form or another. Through siege and battle, or if you are on the same allignment, you could simply have them voted out, or even buy them out. More detail on this hopefully with twills article.

I'll finish with some more features missed out in the initial posting and some corrections.
Only one server (40,000 sqkm), - not for launch, as obviously no one is going to be able to reach the upper kingdoms for quite a while. It solves the initial small population / large land mass area problem also.
- Constellation management. (magic will be influenced by the stars and planets) - can expand further on this in saying that almost evreything will be affected by stars and the moons. From magic, but also including smithing etc.
Guild Managment tools can be awarded (not in for launch)
Individual relationships with your god
No spawn points for mobs, but more intelligent creatures that will roam over an area undefined.
it is only sounding better and better to me, now i only hope my computer will be able to run it decently but for this game i really wanna buy a new graphic card.
bluenose it is great that someone who really knows what is happening has posted here on this forum (maybe you can get me in beta ).
I am going to save some money because i really wanna play this all year long.

The combat system will be a traditional combat style. (Of course, all the MMORPG developers says they will make the combat system that will innovate the genre to make the same think we´ve seen lots of times) There will be a auto attack system with one click, with some special attacks, magic attacks or spells, being able to make "combos" and attacking mounts and things like that.
Keldar is sot on with the archer aiming thing, there will be a mix of styles, some of which arnt totally decided yet as far as I know.
As for getting into beta, there will be 2000 - 5000 added in the next version, so theres more chance of you getting in, i'll point you guys out if im asked for any names.
The article I was talking about written by twill has been reeleaed, at least the part that evreyone can see has. It is at the following link.
K i will keep you at that promise (my name as given in the betaprofile off Dark and Light is Gradi and i am a member since 16/9/2003) can't wait till next betaphase and hoping to get an email in my inbox

In DnL will be not able to loot normal items, but sometimes, some important weapons that you´ve got with quests and things like that can be lost and looted. You´ll respawn with all the items you had when you die, but the better of the item, the more time will take in respawning in your backpack.
The PvP will be dark vs light, fighting to conquer mana fountains. U can teleport from one of you realm´s mana fountains to another one (of your realm). So, conquering new mana fountains and the strongholds and cities near them will be the pvp system of DnL.
(I´ve try say it in english, but i think i´ve not done it very well )

I took the last DnL video with Two Degrees client at about 450Kb/s. It's like BitTorrent : a secured client without spy or corrupted files.
More people use it more the dl rate is good.
Try it (dont find the link, watch on Dark and Light official website).

What I´m wondering about is how the combat system works. I never managed to find out that part in the mansite nor on the forums.
The question is: is combat handled in traditional MMRPG-style, with autoattacking, or in some kind of twitch style?
An other question: any news/speculations on the release date?
The combat system will be a traditional combat style.
(Of course, all the MMORPG developers says they will make the combat system that will innovate the genre to make the same think we´ve seen lots of times)
There will be a auto attack system with one click, with some special attacks, magic attacks or spells, being able to make "combos" and attacking mounts and things like that.
I have seen it said that range attack will be twitch based, whyll melee will be traditional MMORPG combat only!
Maybe Bluenose can confirm that!
Open beta -> Novembre
Game release -> January 05
(Provisional dates)
And, yes, with an archer you can use a skill to use the bow in a sniper way.
