Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea

I'm hoping (and assuming) they are going to make a slightly different concept than WoW. It would be suicide to try and make a WoW clone when they already own.. well.. WoW.

I dont think it would be suicide because WoW has already been out 3 years now and it would be another 2-3 years before a SC mmo is ready. In addition, people like myself are also sick of the fantasy style mmos and would welcome a sci fi one especially if it is Starcraft.

An awesome sci-fi MMO, fine-polished  like only Blizzard can, would be so refreshing right now after all the fantasy MMOs.

Maybe fantasy isnt the best genre for MMORPGs, maybe sci-fi is. The MMOs just started with fantasy, and got stuck for a while because of it

One thing is certain, May 19th cant come soon enough

I hope they release gameplay footage!

there was a time in my life that i spent playing starcraft for about 5-8hours a day for 2-3 years! i can only hope thay make a mmo out of starcraft and if its mmofps that would be cool, me and a few friends played planetside when it still was popular and we were thinking how it would be with aliens running around aswell, Natural Selection for HF engine is rines vs aliens and its great fun and take it to massive multiplayer + another race i think it could be one of the best games out

I'd at least hope the game would be a little more complex and challenging. But yeah, so much for defiance, I'd play it as well, like the sucker that I am.

This would be a well timed strategy on the part of Blizzard.  I think many of us are orc'd out and want something sci fi.  Its also ideal in that WoW has probably reached its pinacle with respect to being a new, fun game.  It will remain the top contender in the fantasy genre for quite some time, but nothing lasts forever.

Every game has a point in its life where the entertainment value declines.   If a Starcraft MMO is true, then blizzard will be able to remain top dog amongst the MMO companies for quite some time.  There will always be a fan base remaining in WoW and Blizzard can only make billions more with a starcraft MMO.   Vivendi will then be able to show SOE exactly how to run a multiple MMO company the right way.  Maybe even a Craft pass to play both games at a discoutned rate lol  The question is where after Starcraft?  Diablo is another fantasy genre game.

I hope Star Trek Online and Star Gate take heed and make a great product so they can compete.  Personally I look forward to Star Trek.  I do wish there was a SWG2 on the horizon by another company as Star Wars has always been my true sci fi passion.

Triston Master Carbine/Master Swords (SWG Eclipse)
    Triston 29 Warden (EQ2 Permafrost)
    Weland 70 Hunter (WoW Hellscream)
    Suidan 36 Cleric (Vanguard Flamehammer)
    Suidan 50 Champion (LOTR Gladden)

If this is true Blizzard is really really really dumb. Starcraft MMO should be done and ready the minute WoW starts REALLY declining.  Don't get me wrong a Starcraft MMO can draw numbers, but a lot of the numbers will come from the WoW crowd. It will split a lot of the numbers. If they waited then they could get all those people who stopped playing WoW.

Ok its pretty much a certainty that the next MMO from Blizzard is going to be set in the starcraft universe, there are a number of reasons for this.

First off Blizzard making another MMO from another of their hit IPs is not stupid and will not take lots of players from WoW.  The only thing that will kill WoW is age and/or Blizzard.  There are many players that like Warcraft world or the Starcraft world but do not like the other.

Secondly North Americans and Europeans need to give up this weird disillusion they have that they drive the MMO market, because honestly they do not.  Sure WoW brought in a bunch of new players from NA and Europe and was a huge success in both markets.  However when WoW was fully released to the heavy hitting MMO Asian countries, most namely China and Korea, those numbers still dwarf the NA and European numbers.  What most people fail to realise is that the majority of the 8+ million subscribers WoW has is from the Asian market and not the NA and Euro market.

Thirdly Starcraft is a way of life in Korea, a country that has more readily embraced online gaming, much more so that NA or Euro markets.  So while Blizzard fans in NA and Euro may want a Starcraft based MMO, Blizzard is going to make one due to its insane popularity in Asia.  Blizzard knows that if they dump another 60+ million dollars into an MMO that it is a 99.99% certainty that they will make their money back from the Asian market alone, I wouldnt doubt if they get all that back form South Korea alone :P

So while people can argue and complain about whether making another MMO starcraft or not, the bottom line is Blizzard is a company, and like all other companies they want to make money.  And making another MMO, especially a Starcraft MMO would be a guaranteed money maker.  So while you can always doubt a companies motives, talent, or IQ never underestimate their greed, and desire for the green.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Don't be so naive.  Just because they announce the game, doesn't mean it's coming out anytime soon.  For all we know, the game could still be in its early alpha stages and far from beta.

If the announcement is indeed an SC MMO, then don't expect it for atleast 2 years, 4 max.  By that time WoW will already have lost a substantial amount of subscribers, which will be the queue for Blizzard to release it.  Ingenius plan I might add.  This will ensure Blizzard once again that they are king of the mmo genre ( Sub-wise )

True! The time frame could be right, but still it feels to soon. Well can't wait to see what it is anyways
  • You can maintain multiple mmorpg's in this market under the same company, it's being done by a few companies. If Blizzard made a Starcraft mmorpg and continued to support WoW, there is no doubt in my mind that both games would be a cash cow. I also don't think they would compete with each other. You might have a few people go 'eh, I'd rather play Starcraft,' but I think if they make the game different enough they will mop up.

They will make enough to justify it in Korea alone. Those people love their Starcraft.

I have a feeling Blizzard is just going to canabalize all the old starcraft ghost models and landscapes for the Starcraft mmo, makes perfect sense though.

Making so much noise you dont know when to listen.

No, I'm sure Blizzard will create a whole new engine for this game.  They recieved a lot of guff for having such poor graphics and the cartoon style of WoW.

Blizzard wont be making an MMO strategy game anytime soon. There simply aren't enough persistent online strategy game out there. This means they don't have a pool of ideas to harvest and polish. More over it means that they have no idea how big a market such a game would tap. No, until some other company makes a proof of concept game, Blizzard wont have a clue what to copy and call their own. I will put my money on a Starcraft 2 announcement.

One of the biggest problems with being an mmo fan is the excruciatingly long wait times. Worlds of Starcraft is a no brainer, and these May 19 announcement rumors are starting to look promising, but remember that it is an announcment only. Someone already posted in this thread that it will still be 2-4 years before we see the actual game, and I'd say thats a pretty no shit estimate.

But I guess hype around an announcement like this is to be expected. I'll be playing Worlds of Starcraft without a doubt, but am I going to married with two kids by then?

Most of my(inside) sources place the name of the project as StarCraft Worlds.

    Just letting you know.
