totally agree with the OP here. I played this game in beta for a while and i got bored really fast. No open pvp, no opposing player factions, no player housing, just quests, quests and some more quests... oh and don't forget the /smoke emote w00t!
You know, it's pretty fun to see people whining about the wow endgame while at the same time they are claiming lotro is the best thing since sliced bread... it's mind boggling.
Just because there's no opposing factions etc at the moment doesn't mean there never will be. I never got to "end game" in WoW as I played it so casually though!
I was still playing DAOC at the same time though
Sadly if you don't like LOTRO or WoW there's very little choice these days, DAOC is still the best PVP game (in my opinion) and by the looks of it nothing will challenge it for quite some time.
Has nobody noticed that this was 100% a TROLL post??? The OP made one post and never replied. The OP has made a grand total of TWO posts in all time on mmorpg. So why is anyone even bothering to reply to him?
i'm sure it's fun and people enjoy it, good for you. I just love PVP too much, and LOTRO monster player aint my idea of fun PVP.
/nod.... I understand, you like to gank.... you're right..none of that in LotRO.
As to ratings, I haven't voted yet, because I think I should get a bit further into the game than level 22 to make a truely informed rating of the game......
Even though I like it... I won't be dropping all 9's / 10's on the game.... its not perfect....but it is pretty fun at times....
Its responses like this that turned me off to this game as well. Any mention of PVP during beta was met with a stiff backlash from the LOTR lore junkies.....was sickening. And yes the gameplay is nothing more than a run of the mill game with an LOTR skin on it. However the game is good and polished, and should definately be near the top of any of the games on this site, pvp or no pvp.
I won't rate the game myself, since I didn't play it and...I won't even give it a try. But it would most likely have rated quite low if I would have tried it...but my time is too precious for that and I just don't care. After all, a game like EvE has 6k votes, which sometimes I wonder how many % of the player-base is that?
When devs say that they are going to make a raiding game and that soloers are going to lack, I lose interest and stop reading or considering the game, as they have an incredibly deficient design and in the best case scenario, I still don't want to play that. Of course, I may do an exception here and there, such as trying a deficient game on the design level. But there better be a good reason. I tried Vanguard because I was an ex-EQ player.
Now now now...why should I consider a DESIGN-DEFICIENT game here? Do I consider this staff or the franchise highly enough as a gamer? LotR is an amazing litterature franchise and I read the books, watch the movies...but gaming wise? It has my interest, just like a spiderman MMO would. I won't try it because they catch my glimpse. The staff? Err..I heard they where able to make a good game with AC like almost 10 years ago...and since then...nothing. DDO is well done, but it isn't RPG per say...and when a company manage to mess a RPG when they have D&D in the title...LOL.
Raiding endgame and soloers lacking? Ask Boromir, he can tells you which game I am playing instead!

I travel around with 4-6 people that I know on a first name basis, but that I don't know in RL, and we just have an absolute blast.
That is the issue imo, if what I am hearing about this game is true. Since one single player has a really rough time going it alone, what is going to happen when the group players start getting bored and the play level starts to ramp up. Everquest all over again. The uber elite guilds will have all the best stuff while the common, run of the mill, player will never be able to get them. Bought it, played it, cancelled it before.

Dunno where you are getting your "info" from, but there is more than enough content/good gear for solo players. I do the 80% solo 20% group route myself
They deserve it. They released the best put together and bug free game since WoW. More immersive than WoW.
I applaud their results. It may not be the game everyone likes, but you can't please everyone. I thought it was very well built.

That's the difference from playing it and "hearing about this game". I solo a lot and i've got some nice gear. The same gear you'd get if you were in a party. I level faster solo but I just am not able to do the quests quite as fast sometimes. It's the difference between doing a level 20 quest at 17 or 18 and be in a party or do it at 19, 20 or 21 solo. Its the one thing that I liked about WoW. I can forsee being able to hit 50 solo all the way. Sure, eventually, bigger and better guilds will get better stuff than the guy who solo's everything but, come on. They're not gonna put the uber gear on stuff that can be solo'ed. Then EVERYONE would have it. Hence, it's not longer uber.

I think the developers mentioned that a majority of the good gear rewarding contents will be fellowship sized content (6 man). 24 man raids will NOT be the only source of high-end game gear. Crafting will play a big role on the end-game too as well as fellowship quests and fellowship epic quests. Yes crafters will be able to make end-game gear based on rare drops off mobs that is on par with raid dungeons.
Don't agree with the original OP or the title of the thread.
I must admit I wasn't over-impressed with LOTRO when I played the beta..so I went away and tried EQII again after a few years away.
It was worse, plus I'm like 5 expansions behind everyone else and I couldnt be bothered to invest that much money in a game that I'm not even convinced I like...and I'm over WOW....and COX just doesn't have the depth to convince me to come back...and there is nothing else really on the market which enthuses me.
So, I'm back to LOTRO. I subscribed and have been playing for a while now. A couple of quest buggettes...but otherwise solid. Good solo play and 99% of the community seems cool (except for the ones who insist on making the comparison to WOW or the ones who want to string up the other European players for daring to use their own languages.
Group (or fellowship) play is fun. I like the trait system. I like the dread system. I like the graphics and I like the music.
It is growing on me. And it's fun to get in on the ground floor while everyone is learning the game, and there is a relatively small game area to learn. No, it didn't knock my socks off when I first started playing..but for me (and apparently many others at the moment) it is the best available option.
As a serious EVE player, retired COH player and a bored WOW player I must tell you I approached this game with a bit of apprehension. I really expected more of the same.
I was at a friends house the other day and saw the game in action. The graphics where very nice, even on his lower end system. I liked the LOTR story and all and thought that it would make a great backdrop for the game. As I watched him I made this comment, "Yeah this looks great but Tolken will be rolling over in his grave with 10K Gandalfs running around."
I about fell out of my chair as he explained the game has no true wizard class. The Loremaster offers a bit but nothing that can ever approach a true Tolken wizard.
As I sat there I had to ponder this. let me get this straight we have a company that only only used the LOTR name but REALLY used the backdrop and story. They did not "fun up" the game to appease a bunch of lame power gamers?
I played the 10 day free trial for about an hour before I went out and bought two copies of the game, one for me and the other for my wife.
Now dont get me wrong I still love EVE and think it is one of the best games on the market today and of all time period. However if Turbine can really pull this together and keep this game pure to the Tolken feel (well as pure as you can and still make it a game) then this could be the best fantasy MMORPG bar none and will rival EVE for it's originality.
Wait I hear the flames building, let me explain. TRUE Tolken fantasy is RARE at best in gaming, in fact until now I would say none existent. IN true Tolken style the heroes are larger than life but not larger than God. Magic was truly mysitcal and mysterious in true Tolken fashion. Armies feared true wizards and regualr players should be terrified.
No one has yet had the guts to really try and pull this off in fantasy gaming, no one has tried to make it really hit the genre at its origins. The only fantasy base game to EVER come close was the Thief series.
In taking this step Turbine has risked losing some power gamers but I think in the end this will pay off for them. This is a fresh approach to fantasy gaming and I would love to see this push the genre back to it's roots.
Well done Turbine and they are well deserving of their high rank, just as CCP has earned it's place with EVE.
(The key now is will Turbine hold fast to it's vision and thus keep deserving this ranking)
....and COX just doesn't have the depth to convince me to come back...and there is nothing else really on the market which enthuses me.
hehe CoX has way more content and depth then LotR, plus has great character models, unlike this game, and is equally as well put together.
What is dosent have though is a well known IP to suck in the sheep.
Honestly, in a straight up 'Top Trumps' contest between LotR and just about any other current major MMORPG, LotR would lose. It's only high score would be 'Stability: 8'... It's just supported by a truck load of hyped up casual players right now who are suffering from a case of the Emporer's new clothes, until the next shiny game comes along.

The main thing lacking in depth is the game system itself, rather than the pure story based content.
By this I mean that:
- Combat is extremely monotonous and completely unchallenging.
- Character customisation is virtually non-existent -and before anyone brings up titles, traits and so on, they mean very little-.
- The cities are bland and static.
- The game world is on the small side.
- Npc's either say nothing at all or bombard you with uninspired chunks of quest related text. The writing style is of course a matter of taste, but I find it to read more like an article than a LotR story.
