I'm inclined to say Chrono Trigger, but there's some really old DnD modules and GURPS games I played even before most computer games came out that I really loved for their well written and detailed worlds. And no computer game has yet to achieve the amount of detail or complexity of gameplay available in tabletop DnD
I feel old now.

If it counts... Quest For Glory. You could classify it as an adventure game, but it has quite a few RPG elements in it also and a wonderful sense of humor.
There has never been a linear game that has as much replay value for me as that one.
after that:
2- FF VII
3- FF Tactics (PS)
4- Dragon Warrior III
5- Parasite Eve
6- The Bard's Tale (the original one). Could anyone recommend the best game in that classic Bard's Tale/M&M style to me? I've only played a few so I would love to check out that old-school 1st person dungeon crawling at it's finest.
Baldur's Gate 2 is my favorite RPG ever. I still play it today. When I was younger my favorites were Final Fantasy 2,3, and 7. I also enjoyed the Dragon Warrior and Chrono Trigger games.
albert oddesey, shining force 2, lufia 2, dragon force 1 and 2, shining the holy ark, shining wisdom, magic knight rayearth, zelda 3 theres so much more, i still play em to this day on an off using emulated programs...
sorry a little off topic but I played kotor 2 and thought the game was awsome, is kotor exactly the same game or is it different enough to purchase and play.
1.shining force 2
2.kotor 2 (as stated above, I haven't played the first one)
3.oblivion
4.pokemon (everyone just pretend I didn't list that one)
KOTOR2 has better graphics and more options as mentioned. KOTOR is a lot of fun and the cost is so low now that it's nearly free. You probably can get it for between 5-10 dollars. I highly recommand that game and also the Baldur's Gate series which is made by the same company a few years earlier.

The best RPG games I have ever played go back to the Commodore 64 days. #1 Wasteland #1A The Bard's Tale
Holy crap forgot about my commodore 64, yeah Bards Tale was the ish, and so were the gold box D&D games. WHat else, ZORK is another great one that comes to mind.,

Hehe, I LOVED ZORK, (echo..., echo..., echo...). Good ole INFOCOM.
Well, it's hard to pick a single one since I loved so many, but I liked BG and NWN as well as Revenant. Hmm, I guess I will go with BG2.
For MMOs, nothing brought the feeling that EQ did when I first played that. And no, it wasn't my first. The Realm actually was my first. EQ just seemed to get the world feeling correct more than others did. When it was dark, it was hard to see. So much so that sometimes you didn't know something was 5 foot in front of you if you didn't have a lantern or night vision. Scary feeling. Never had that feeling again and I am tired of the same old grinding of all the other games I tried.
#1- Good old D&D... we were fortunate enough that we had a GM who could transcend worlds... I know it's wrong, but it can be done. From dungeon crawls to ravenloft. Absolute gold.
#3- Werewolf, playing as the Nuwisha... haha, I still remember my werecayote "Xochipilli Chuckle Chuckle"...
PC
#1- Fallout 1 & 2 (and Jagged Alliance 2- I know it's not really RPG, but damn close enough... I love how your mercenaries interacted with each other)
#2- haha, Diablo2, we used to sit down and go through the entire game inc. ToB in the one sitting... they were the days when we had time to play games.
Console... eh... haha, does We Love Katamari series count?

singleplayer:
1) FF7 - ah the good ole days of great story lines...one of a kind and hard to beat
2)FF3 - for the SNES but still a great story line with tons of combat combinations
3) Chrono Trigger - I'm still waiting for this to go MMO -- time travel, fantasy and magic, sci fi, rolled into one great package
multiplayer: NVW2
MMO - still waiting. looking forward to POTBS, AoC, and WAR

Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 3
Earthbound
These are just some of my favorite RPG's. To all the people who say FF7 is the best Final Fantasy, it isnt. FF3/FF6 is.
Also, Chrono Cross is the best RPG ever, in my opinion.
Best MMORPG: City of Heroes
In my opinion.
