AD&D Pool of Radiance series. Nothing will ever top those 4 games.
It's good to see that the AD&D gold Box series got several mentions. To me they are like your first girlfriend that you never really forget. They were the first computer games that I ever played and to this day I have fond memories of playing all through the night until the break of dawn! LOL
Well at my age and after so many RPGs it is a tough decision. So after reviewing these are my picks of RPGs of all time. Cant say one is better than another for they all were unique addictive and very fun to play. Wizardry series I-VIII, Next up Elder scrolls starting with my favorite of all time "Daggerfall"(first open-ended rpg ). Next on my list is Final Fantasy , favorites were III and VII. Next up on my list is EYE of the Beholder I-II. Then for a strategy RPG Shining Force I-II were top dogs. Suikoden was also very fun. And last but not least.. Shadowrun for the Sega genesis.
Had to add I worked for SSI(Strategic Simulations Inc) back in the 80ies. Eye of the Beholder series were the best of D&D/AD&D games of the genre.Still not my favorite though. All of us that worked for SSI were gamers. More board/minature/book based gaming than video.
Also was into Status Pro football lol.. Still remember playing Renegade, Renegade legion. even made a video game from the board game. shadowrun, AD&D. For video games we liked SNK stuff back then. Didnt really like our games tooo much. but of course we made them.
We used to hold sessions almost every night after work for our passion of the time.Usually Renegade or Battletech. also liked Cosmic Encounter, Civilization(Board game) Panzer leader. Played gamma world,traveller.. a few others.
Might and Magic (not the Turn based ones although they are somewhat fun)
IMO these games set the tone for the genre, and were the precursors for the modern era MMO.
I still play these from time to time on Dosbox. Although you'll no longer see me up till 5am in an effort to clear Mangars Tower or clear out the dwarven ruins.
I think it's kinda strange that no developer has modeled their game after the Strategy group based engine used in Baldur's Gate and also some of the other Infinity engine games. I'm sure it could be done in a 3D enviroment and I know Bioware is working on Dragon Age that will probably use a system like that. It just seemed a great thing to be able to control a whole group in real time and be able to equip them all and form stragegies as a group to defeat the mobs.
Breath of fire 3, breath of fire 4, breath of fire (1). Tales of destiny 1 & 2. Final Fantasy (entire series). Valkyrie Profiles. Tales of Symphonia. Gotta say the 1st ultima game is there for me too. In terms of non-console multiplayer games I'd say. World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, Guild Wars, Sacred and Sacred Underworld. To be honest though it's really hard to put a finger on the best one even in my own opinion their are so many fun RPG's out there. I think to me though every new generation when Final Fantasy comes out w/ it's next title i'm always blown away by Square's ability to keep forming great ideas, and state of the art graphics. FFVII, FFX, and FFXII all did that for me, and I here there new game the last remnant looks incredible. Anyways just my two cents, actually looks like I gave a quarter, guess my brain must go recharge.
PS: Baldurs Gate, NWN 1&2) would have been mentioned earlier but everyone said those already.
Just RPG? The original Final Fantasy series. Hell, i think ill go out in storage and get my nintendo out and flashback. Hope i can still blow out the cartrages...hah.
The greatest single player roleplaying game of all times are: The Elder Scrolls III ~ Morrowind.
But I haven't yet played The Elder Scrolls IV ~ Oblivion, and that game will probably push the other down the throne.
And for the greatest online roleplaying game, I don't know, the only truly online roleplaying game that I have played were EverQuest II and that game contained too many bugs and shortcomings to be enjoyable.
they are like michael jordan back in the 90s, indisputably greatest basketball player of all times
someone might say gusta non disputare but still we can evaluate any phenomenon in any reality with a specific set of criteria to come up with a pattern that is close to perfection
as for world of warcraft I hope it will get dethroned by Age of Conan and eventually warhammer online

Live long and prosper
LOL. Now that's funny. The thought of elves in Fallout makes me smile.
Best RPG I have played is Lucas Arts' OUTLAWS, followed closely by DIABLO. Both of these games are from the 1996-1997 era, and both were fantastic.
Really miss OUTLAWS.

I have yet to see anything wow me in a game like Nei's moment or Darkforce in that one.....

Best RPG game: Jagged Alliance 2 (and it's a damn good turn-based war/strategy game too!!), with Fallout 2 coming as a distant second.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
