Might and Magic (not the Turn based ones although they are somewhat fun)
IMO these games set the tone for the genre, and were the precursors for the modern era MMO.
I still play these from time to time on Dosbox. Although you'll no longer see me up till 5am in an effort to clear Mangars Tower or clear out the dwarven ruins.
Wow. All those are my favs as well. Its so rare to find a fellow BT player.
Final Fantasy 7, hands down.. no competition. If you're a RPG fan and you haven't played FF7, then you are not really a RPG fan now are you?
Granted this one is right up there and it would be on or near the top of many fans list and no doubt is - even mine. I think of FF7 as being the second best single player RPG I ever played. However, just because I do not rate it as my most favorite does not mean I and others like me are not RPG fans. We just have slightly different taste.
honestly i would have to say Turf Battles or Planeshift i played them both for over a year i mainly liked Planeshft just because of the community and Turf Battles was fun but all there was to do was PK
I agree, fallout is one of the best series Ive ever played,
But im not sure if you could really call it an rpg, some people have classified the game as an adventure game.
But on this topic, is it generally for PC only games or does it include playstation and other systems?
Not an RPG rofl, are you totally insane, it's one of the only games in the computer history where you can pretty much do anything you want and still complete the game, even kill children. Kill the last boss by only talking, you can pretty much complete the whole game with minimal fighting. You can complete it by killing everything in the game.
Most "RPGs" nominated in this thread are no roleplaying at all, with sad NPC dialogs. Roleplaying games are about playing a role and do what you want, not walking after a long line to complete the game:D
Final fantasy 7, if a game can make you tear at the death of a character, it's got immersive points.
Diablo 2, just cause it was my first real addiction game. Not too immersive, but leveling up for some reason wasn't a grind.
SWG Pre-CU, just cause I was REALLY able to ROLEPLAY a character and have fun.
And just for the heck of it, D&D PnP 3.5. Getting 4 ppl + GM together, drinking mountain dew, and playing at the office for a whole weekend and until the employees come back on monday, priceless. The fact that our boss was the gm helped us not getting fired lol.
So many great games posted...Fallout, SSI games, Ultimas, and all of the Black Isle games.
Haven't seen Shadowrun for the Genesis listed yet. My lord, I remember putting in so much time on that bad boy...so damn innovative with its mainframe "dungeons"...as well as the different career paths you could take.

Agreed. Never in my wildest dream would I call Diablo a "rpg" but "hack'n slash". I still think it is a great game though.

RPG = Roleplaying game
Almost any game that has a story and you must undertake a role becomes classified as an RPG. Some just has more depth than others.
Comments

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Best RPG for sure Fallout.
Morrowind and oblivion aint RPGs... They are more close to STALKER than an RPG game.
