I'm curious in PotBS. If I remember correctly, there hasn't been many successful pirate mmo's, if any, and I really think it will be the first. When PotBS comes out, ill play it for a month or two and decide wheather to let PotBS go, or the game im playin when it comes out. More than PotBS, i will try AoC, and WAR. If WAR fails at first, I will stick with it because i have faith in Mythic after DAoC, and I think a lot of people will eventually go to WAR for PvP.
I do not think any game can live up to it's own Hype. The actual truth is always embellished to provide the best light to certain points.
What would I like to see in a game? - - - I would like to see a crafting system that is like unto a game all on its own because of it's breadth and depth, yet also intregal to the game itself.
No 8 foot swords mysteriously popping out of a little rats butt. No weapon and armor drops at all. Merchants selling only base grade weapons and armor and quests giving only slightly better. The craftspeople should be the ones who supply the world the good gear. It is so sad that people who take up these craft professions are never in demand because you can grind on a certain mob and get a drop that is better than what they can create. Making it no more than a time killer.
Crafting should be far beyond the fact that anyone who does "XXX" amount of repititious moves will be equally even in the art. Yes repeating should give you gains in being better. A weaponsmith needs to have strength to be able to hammer out a fine blade. But just being a strongman should not mean you can be a weaponsmith. Intelligence is needed to learn the skill. Luck is needed in a small amount to avoid flaws in the metals making. Dexterity is needed to a small degree in weaponsmithing more so in armorsmithing and mostly in leatherworking. A leatherworker can make studded leather but needs a blacksmiths skill to make the studs. All the skills need to be intregal to the others.
Craftspersons woiuld have a list of attributes to distribute a base amount of points into after chosing thier profession. The game would then add a random modifier that can be either negative or positive to each attribute that will be forever unknown to the players. This should help avoid the cookie cutter template and give the dedicated crafter the ability to become the most sought after.
I would also like to see games get away from the cookie cutter template alltogether. No more identical 3 month end game characters. Frankly I get to the end game and that is it for me. I am off to another game. Give me a game where I have to nurture and cultivate my character through growing pains. The game should have many hidden factors, and random modifiers, and never give out any numbers.
But thats me I do not enjoy knowing that there is one certain way to play a class that is the only way to be effective. That stops me from having the freedom to play as I feel my character would be. Ah well I have rambled on to long , it is time to shut up.
between War and AoC, because I don't trust EA and how they operate business with mmo's, AoC will get my vote. I hope that the 'M' rating will help keep it that way...
NOOOOOO, you got to be joking AOC isnt really made by EA is it?
Damn my dreams are getting smashed I really hope you miswrote or i misread or something.

I honestly don't know. I'm guessing WAR will mostly likely be the only game that lives up to its hype since they actually cared enough to push back its release date to polish it. It actually seemed they saw Vanguard's trainwreck launch and are being careful not to repeat it. I'm not even into PVP-oriented games but it looks good.
Also Bioware's MMO, they always release quality stuff and are a great company that gives a flying f*ck about their customer base so I hope the best for their MMO.
STO and SG:W both have 0%. i guess they are the two most likey to not live up to hype.
I voted WAR, just because I think that it will improve upon DOAC. Honestly, I don't feel that there are that many games that have had the hype of Vanguard since WoW. The current batch of MMORPGs in development don't seem to have the wow factor (no pun intended). I hate that all MMOs are going to be judged by WoW standards.
I pick WAR. Mythic has been incredibly open with the game development of this title. They have put out a ton of game development videos and in game videos of the current alpha stage of the game. All they've promised is that the game will be RvR/PvP focused and fun. They've shown a lot of what they've promised and are honest with the fan base in terms of how they are designing the game play and which crowd they are going for with this title. I think they saw what happened with Vanguard ( failure ) and then saw what happened to LOTRO with all it's polish and shine ( success ) and decided to go the extra mile.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
I really think that WAR could be the WoW "killer". WAR will most likley have great RvR / PvP, this should be obvious after DAoC gained much of it's success from amazing RvR / PvP. The only thing is, if i'm not mistaken, there's only two sides in WAR, having three sides in DAoC was great, it offered a lot more races, and classes. Oh yeah, and i think WAR will only have three races(please correct me if im wrong). I'm still expecting WAR to be a step up from DAoC, and can't wait till it comes out, until then, i think im gonna play either CoX, DAoC, or PotBS when it comes out.

Having two sides solves the gang bang nature of PvP that was seen in DAOC where one side would wait for the other two to kill each other and then move in. Or worst yet two sides teamed up against the third side and slaughtered them.
As for races there will be 3 races for each side upon launch. Destruction side will have Greenskins ( Orks and Goblins ), Dark Elves, and Tzeentch Chaos ( Chaos corrupted humans ). The forces of Order will have Empire ( humans ), High Elves, and Dwarves. People expect Mythic to add two more races when they launch their first expansion. Many believe and hope that it will be Skaven for Destruction and Lizardmen for Order as it easliy ties into lore and both are natural enemies/pairings.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Of the games listed Warhammer, and Age of Conan will live up to my personal hype, I can't speak on behalf of other people's sense of hype.
Tabula Rasa I'm confident enough to say will live up to my hype and the majority of its followers, because they are very controlled in doling out information. Another company to do that was Perpetual entertainment with Gods and Heroes. Both of these games have a very specific list of features that seem reasonable for a development team unlike the bloated exaggerations of teams who tried to make games like Dark and Light or Vanguard.
I have excessivley high expectations for Spellborn. Certain things have made me wonder about the state of the game at release and based on their own estimates provided those things which have been delayed to not be available at release should be availble 3 months afterwards. If those features fail to materialize by four months from release I will be dissappointed. It really has the potential to be a million+ subscriber business based on the faetures it has planned for the immediate future.
Originally posted by paulscott TCOS has the most accurate hype out right now. and almost none of it is showy we're going to have this, it's what they actually have.
They seem to have misstepped on Shard Conquests. We'll see if that feature planned for release actually makes it back in or within ~3 months time.
Ragnarok Online 2 is the only game in development that will meet the hype its generating. I mean the only people truly hyped about it on these forums are a couple people who played and enjoyed Ragnarok Online. The game itself has the financial backing and development time to be the greatest MMO ever made. No other game except for Reqiuem has had such a dedicated development time. Also its features put it a cut above the rest. Not to mention how smoothly the beta's have gone thus far.
War is definetly the victim of over-hyping. Everyone seems to think it will be the greatest thing. In addition its development time was incredibly short, it hasn't even began testing so chances are it won't be out until 2008. Also if Dark Age of Camelots is any sign of its PVP, it will be... unbalanced at first. Not to mention not even compare to Korean Counterparts. There are also a few possiblities of short comings in the game. With too ambitious of a project you could potentially not deliver the features to a good enough quality. Also the more features you add, the lower the amount of people you could have per server.
Age of Conan looks way to ambitious to be good. Its system specs are going to be high, also its somewhat twitch combat is going to be a bandwidth hog leading to latency issues. Also beyond level 20 in the game thus far has been vague which could mean a content issue.
The Chronicles of Spellborn hasn't been making much press rescently. They could possibly live up to the hype, although with so many games on the horizon promising more then they can deliver, a game like Spellborn could go unnoticed.
Darkfall is vaporware. Its development has been very long and very little to show for it. The vids they have shown thus far are lacking in every department.
Tabula Rasa needs some more press to be good. Its made by the developer of UO so it could be great, its also a shooter sci-fi. However, they have also been quite rescently and could be overshadowed by other MMOs.
Pirates of the Burning Sea. Graphics look clay-like. Current games similiar to this could make people not want to try this game.
Stargate Worlds. There really isn't much to go on to base content on for this game which could make the game cheesy. Also the concept behind Stargate could be beyond the scope of current technology.
Star Trek Online. No way it will live up to its hype. No Star Trek game has.
2Moons. Why is this game even on the list. Its a Korean Grindfest for sure. Its f2p w/ Cash Shop. It may be good for a f2p game but thats about it.
Games that shoulda made the list: Huxley, Hero's Journey, Gods and Heroes, Aion, Guild Wars 2, and Lineage 3.
I voted for 'Other', becuase i think Bioware's MMO will be my only hope ( provided it's science fantasy/science fiction i pray) Otherwise, i am sick to the bear bones of swords, dragons, orcs and such ilk. if i never play another one of them i'll be happy. I pray it's KotOR online, but any science fantasy will be good. Also i know EVE is sort of science fantasy, but it's a sim really, i am not a ship, i want an avater to Edit : don't even mention to me that ungodly clusterf**k of SWG: Post NGE FPS Trash, quit that on Nov, 16th. Remember, remember the 15th of November
u are the ValimChe from Bioware's forums right?
completely egree with u, am waiting for Biowares MMO for 1,5 years....
I would have to vote for Other. In my opinion, the most popular (or well-known) games always tend to be over-hyped. They may be really good, but the expectations people have on them are often even higher. Thus, I'll say that the game most likely to live up to its hype is Infinity: The Quest For Earth. There's not really that much hype about this game (except on the game's own forums), and the promised list of features is greater than those of most games in development today IMO. The fact that there's already a playable combat prototype also goes against the claims of it being vaporware, too.
Im waiting for Darkfall, say its not coming out blah blah whatever, but when it does come out every mmo gamer will try it out. And with its listed features blowing every game out of the water, when it does come out i think it will deliver. Ppl say a game that has been in development since 2001 must be vaporware but in reality its been in serious development since 2003( 4 years for a game with the amount of features and vision of Darkfall isnt very long at all).
But ill play POTBS untill darkfall. Might try AOC or WAR but imho im not looking for another level based, item based grind fest.
