This statement would be something of a historical one, but... people really don't care now. And there is no point denying it - Smed really admitted NGE (or at least going for it WITHOUT consulting the playerbase) was a mistake. Can you even imagine saying it more clearly than this?
I play the game and enjoy it, I like the current dev team alot. Smed on the other hand should have been terminated or demoted. It should have happened a long time ago.. Never to late to correct this mistake and deal with him now. His admission of such a colossal mistake with an IP with the value of Star Wars is reason alone. It may not bridge the divide between SWG and the Vets but it might help a bit.
It's not the first time someone from SOE admitted that the NGE was a "badly made decision" (to put it kindly). I recall a while back 2 SWG devs at a developer conference saying to other professionals not to make their mistake, with the players you have.
Personally I don't care if Smed admits that the NGE was a gross error.
I will side with what has been said earlier. Actions speak louder than words.
There's no intention of a rollback. There's no intention of even a Pre-NGE server. They intend on pursuing the NGE despite admitting their error.
Again, "Actions speak louder than words."

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Okay, several SOE reps have said that the NGE was a mistake. Fine. But last I saw, the NGE is still there despite our massive protests in the official forums and by the biggest protest: Cancelling accounts. There's no intention of a rollback. There's no intention of even a Pre-NGE server. They intend on pursuing the NGE despite admitting their error.
The tricky thing is that if they rolled live servers back to pre-CU or pre-NGE now, they'd piss off their existing customers and wind up in the same situation there was many months ago. They're not willing to hire additional staff to make a pre-CU client/server relationship work, despite the fact that they really could if they wanted to: the only true differences between NGE and, well, not-NGE is the client and user interface (and I'd speculate the client/server API as well). The devs could even add content to the game world using their worldbuilder and insert new content into both games, I'm fairly sure.
This is why SWGEMU is a bad thing, IMO. Those folks are doing the work required to satisfy the pre-CU crowd, effectively taking that responsibility off of SOE. If it wasn't beneficial in some way to SOE, the warhawks of law would descend upon the emu team and tear them a new one immediately -- especially because Star Wars is involved.

Smed never admitted the NGE was a mistake. He has said time and again that the the biggest mistake was the IMPLEMENTATION of the NGE, not the game changes. As we all know, it was a huge mistake, but he'll never admit to that.

Why? Because I took the given statement, read it and understood it? Or because I DIDN't take a statement and twist it to say something it didn't but instead something I wanted it to say? Seems like the former is a much better trait for a judge to have then the latter.
Taking that statement and saying it means Smedely says the NGE is a mistake is the same as seeing a Papa Johns add that says "Buy a free large pizza and get another large pizza free!" and saying that papa johns is giving a way free pizza's. Maybe he just answered a question that the interviewer asked him...
Smed may have admitted the NGE was a mistake, but hey, it's SOE. They will undoubtedly come up with all new mistakes to torment Vanugard players with, many of whom were of course former SWG players who left due to the NGE.
And admitting it was a mistake does not mean that there will be "classic" servers. Those days are dead and gone, even if they put the code up on a server it would not have the community that made the game so special, as a lot of the entertainers had left before the NGE due to bad design choices (Christmas Holocrons and never addressing AFK bots anyone?).
To me SWG simply illustrates that SOE lacks the ability to turn dreams into reality. They actually can make (or at least resist breaking completely) some fairly decent games, such as EQ2, but I doubt that SOE has the will or the desire to try and make Vanguard take flight; just as they allowed SWG to fall into darkness before the NGE with those little things like making various spaceships obtainable only by doing ground missions because they were too lazy to make some new space-based quests and stick to the original design that space was space and the ground was the ground, and the two only met at shipwright, droid engineer, and faction points.
Dream - capital ships, boarding actions etc
Reality - no real content in space beyond the non-dynamic levelling missions.
I guess that dream died a long time ago and will never be back. I wonder what SOE is really about to crush out of Vanguard's dreams?
Okay, several SOE reps have said that the NGE was a mistake. Fine. Yes, as time progressed, the chances of seeing any Pre-NGE servers or a rollback have lowered (and they were remote to begin with). No going around that. Trials of Obi-Wan / The NGE hit the fan, IIRC, Fall / November 2005. We're almost halfway in 2007. It's a safe bet to say that nothing will officially be done for even a Pre-NGE server for the reasons you stated.
As for the SWGEMU, I have my doubts if it can make it, but if it does, then good on them. Whether legal action is taken on them has been up in the air. They're not exactly "hidden" and SOE knows about 'em.
They're providing a service that SOE vehemently refuses to do, something that we've begged for on the official forums when the NGE hit the fan.
Either way, if the SWGEMU works or is slammed by the legal measures, then the "Evil Empire" still does not get my money!
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. LOL. Smedley is one of the slimiest, twistiest execs in the MMORPG industry - 'All our research focus groups are telling us that the NGE is precisely what the players are begging for!. This little admission is very funny and provides some validation for those of us who played for three years and then saw our game ruined in a hilariously clumsy, cack-handed attempt to leech the idiot WoW audience.
Shack: Yeah, it seems as if many players are mostly happy with the gameplay as it is. Performance issues and bugs seem to top the list of desired improvements. Do you know if those areas are going to be an immediate focus of the team?
John Smedley: Absolutely, you know, performance improvements, bugs, definitely at the top of our list. We're not going to go in and make some broad-sweeping changes. We tried that with Star Wars Galaxies, we screwed it up, and we're not going to do it again. [laughs] It really is as simple as that. We try to learn from our mistakes. Maybe we're not always perfect, but in this particular case let's fix the things that are broken, not the things that aren't.
Good attitude, IMO! Just 3 years too late for SWG.
The entire article is a good read, although it can be summed up in one word: spin. SOE is letting ex-Sigil develop the game, SOE working on bugfixes, SOE not going to do anything to the game, etc. Remains to be seen. There's another good quote about why they bought vanguard into the SOE Station Access fold that i found humorous.
Shack: F13.net recently posted an interview with an ex-Sigil employee. In the interview he praises Sony Online for its support after your prior merger, but also recounts feeling confused at the time as to why Sony would want to buy a game that is essentially a direct competitor to EverQuest II. Did that apparent conflict of interest ever weigh on your original decision to become involved with Vanguard?
John Smedley: Not even slightly. To be honest with you, the way we look at it, we thought Vanguard was a very strong game all along, and we knew that it was a game that was kind of core to the audience that we have. We thought it would be a good fit. That's why we decided to add it to the Station Access plan. We figured we'd give our player base an opportunity to play something that's a little different than what we already have, and let them check it out. It just seemed like a natural fit for us.
So, Station Access is really just a farming tool for EQ subs, eh? You don't lose subs when you control all the games, after all.
I'll give it to Mr. Smed, undisputed master of the spin.

I had a full suit of RSI, I could hunt most Jedi (when they weren't hiding on kasssyk). NGE killed that game for me...so what....move on, really.
rofl "provide the same level of service as our other titles"... somehow that doesn't make me feel better
maybe if smed actually made a formal appology, like a 2 page essay about how badly it all went down, and how badly he screwed us over SOE wouldn't be so bad.
And Smedley.. I learned one thing when it comes to SOE and their devs.... I don't trust a single thing you say.. LIES LIES LIES most of the time.. You'd say anything to keep customers or attract them.. Anything for the almighty dollar... Smedley should be a politician

***Another Sixth Months later*** " Two!! Two Million on Vanguard"
***Present Day*** "Yea the NGE was a pretty dumb*ss decision."

If A=B and B=C does A=C?
1. Smedly saying they have learned from NGE, not listening to players was a mistake
2. players speak out against NGE, players left game due to NGE
3. SOE does not listen to players and pushes out NGE despite players speaking out
so:
A=it was a mistake to not listen to players (who were saying not to publish NGE)
B=if they had listened to players, they would not have published NGE
C= publishing NGE was a mistake
...or something like that, hard to force this into an A B C equation
