Is there a choice to participate in RvR ? I prefer swg type games where I can duel or not (my choice). Otherwise, is there a PvE only server ? I'm really more of a solo player type who occasionally groups when necessary.

Yes, you don't need to RvR. There's an entire PvE game inside each realm. The RvR is only in certain zones. If you don't go in those zones, you'll never have to fight another player. They also have a /duel command where you can duel another realm member. Or... if you perfer no PvP at all, there are PvE servers where you can travel between all 3 realms and thier fronteers without fear of getting PKed.
As far as a solo player goes, this is the game for you. Any class can solo a blue con mob. Some may do it easier then others, but even a straight up healer could do it. It's much MUCH slower. It took my friend 1day 14hours /played on a character that started at lvl 1 to get to lvl 50. You just need to know where to group and develope a good friendship with some more experienced players. If you choose a PvE server, the populace is like EQ. If you choose a PvP server, people are more inclined to help you because it helps the realm and puts one more body out on the fronteer to help defend your relics, and one more body on the relic raids for other's relics.
You do not have to participate in RvR, and there is a "cooperative" server where it is non-existant (Gaheris). The good thing about Gaheris is that you can play characters from all 3 realms (that gives you 24 characters on the server) and travel to and through all realms. You can still get realm points in order to get realm abilities. Starting at level 20, you receive one realm point per level and there are encounters in the frontiers with NPCs (instead of players) where you can accumulate more realm points.
Even on the regular servers you don't have to RvR, but you can't get realm abilities if you don't and they can be pretty handy in PvE. However, if you are sure you'd rather not ever participate in RvR, go Gaheris
Don't sell the RvR experience short until you give it a whirl. Your probably thinking back to some open PvP game where level 1,000,000's could run around whacking level 1's and stealing there newbe shirts all day for kicks.
This isn't how it works in a DAoC. You can only RvR in a couple zones, about 75% of the zones are RvR zones. You must enter these area's of your own will. If your not in the mood to RvR, no one is going to sneak up on your and kill you in a normal PvE zones.
The lower level RvR zones are called Battle Groups or BG's. They are loads of fun. PvP in DAoC is very steral (witch lacks allot of the fun or PvP), you can't speak with people of the other realms, so there is no trash talk. You see a red name over someone head, you whack them. When you've had enough you do something else.
It's certainly worth giving it a try, if you don't like RvR do the PvE.
