New to MMORPGs, any suggestions?

Hey I'm new to the whole MMORPG thing. A while ago my brother bought World of Warcraft, and I love it, really fun game. I'm not too familiar with all the lingo and everything so I find myself a bit overwhelmed when looking for new games to play. So I was hoping maybe some of you would have some suggestions. Are there any other good games out there that aren't too technical and maybe more on the role playing side rather than pvp?

It depends on your liking. Most of these games are in the so called "fantasy" enviroment. There arent many differences between games in the term of creativity. And if you want role-playing then forget this genre becouse the rpg part is just a stereotype, it doesnt mean you will actually do some roleplaying, though some game give you this option too.

Tell us what do you like (besides the rpg) i.e: you like to grind (killing countles monsters) or do you a quest whore? Are you a socializer type or a lonely wolf? Are you a graphics freak? These criterias are more occurate then the type of games becouse 90% of these games are almost the same in the terms of the content and creativity (respect to the few exceptions)

Generally I would recommend a newer game for a newer player. There are subtle improvements that have been made since the days when the craze began. Better interfaces, easier to find quest givers, smarter chat systems, etc.  I would recommend three games and regardless of what particular aspects of WoW you enjoyed, they may each offer a unique appeal.

Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) - Excellent PvE experience. The game feels very linear much like WoW and EQ2 but it's the newest release available and unlike Vanguard, was quite polished on launch day.

Eve Online - Not necessarily easy to get into but it's the most immersive MMORPG available and offers a unique feel that some love and some hate. But if you love then you love it.

Guild Wars - Another unique experience. It doesn't feel so much like an MMORPG but the small team battles and breadth of skills you can learn offer a high amount of replay value for those that enjoy Guild War's content.

The only trial available for LOTRO is by finding a friend with the game. If that's not a possibility then I would go with Guild Wars first because you will find out pretty early on whether you like it or not. You will need to give Eve Online a fair amount of time and the only advice I can offer is to jump into the community ASAP. Its gameplay relies more heavily on player interaction than any other to have a good time.

I would also recommend a game but consider this only if you:

    - dont regret to play a graphicaly outdated game

    - love the sci-fi

Anarchy Online is one of the best games in the genre in terms of creativity, intimate background, balanced professions and i could list the ephitets if i would want it.

Things that the game can offer:

    pros:

14 unique profession (each requires different style of playing)

A huge and interactive playfield (actually 2 playfield, but more on that)

Complex skill system (Actualy in this game there are DIFFERENCIES between same professions)

Huge item database with countless social equipments and an option to roleplaying with your friends (and gives you the feeling of uniquenes which -lets say it- other games dont offer (respect for some exceptions)

Always changing economy, history and politics between the 3 factions

Friendly, active and very helpful community

Such support from a company that i never seen before in a game

I could continue it but if that wasnt enough then more of it wont be enough neither.

    cons:

    Endgame (oh well)

Sometimes you feel the scene a little bit empty

lack of content at the endgame

you can get bored after you played the game through 4 years (sily, i know)

    also:

the game can be played as a froob (f2p user) but you can subscribe for more content (and its worth it)

If this is your first mmo i would go with Lotro definitely. It is pretty simple and if you haven't seen the best already it can't disappoint you + there are no big bugs that you have to find a way around just to play.

    LotRO

Other than that wow is super easy mode.

I'm gonna have to recommend EverQuest II. It's a very polished and solid MMORPG, and if you play on the "Role-Playing" servers you are bound to find people willing to. EQII is, in my opinion, the closest thing to a story-driven RPG with other players online. NPCs have voice-acting, the quests are more about the history and lore of the world and developing your character is interesting as there are alternative "skill trees" to carve out your character to what you like (referred to as AA by many). Lord of the Rings Online is another option, and is more story-driven than any MMO out there if that sounds appealing.

If you wanna try EQ2 there are free trials at: http://everquest2.station.sony.com/promotions/playthefae/

    and

    http://trialoftheisle.com/

Good luck! Some of your most memorable MMO moments happen during your first 6 months-year of playing them. Have fun.

I'd have to agree, EQ2 is a very polished game, and has great tutorials, and a very intuitive gui

AO is a bit too bulky/indepth for a newbie to mmos.  That is not saying it is not a good game, just not good for noobs.  They will end up being an advy with heavy weapons and no nano pool or some such damned toon that cannot be salavged w/o a full IPR.

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

Phantasy Star Universe -   great action RPG MMO ... simple, fun, kill kill kill

Not too much to worry about, fairy simple and you can change your class if you are not having fun as one.

Search for pso-world and look at the forums. Great community except for one clique of assholes. But they aren't liked that much anyway :3

Edit: PSU doesn't get you on epic quest storylines and such. its just an easily accessible hack and slash game.

I second LoTRO.  It's a lot like World of Warcraft in that it's quest based, and it's the most RP friendly game I've ever played.  I mean, you can compose music in the game.  That's got to be one of the biggest features ever added to an MMO strictly to enhance Role Playing.  I don't think they named an official RP server, but there are entire guilds you can join that are dedicated to it.

I think that's the best fit for what you want.  Games like Eve and Anarchy Online have a learning curve, and while I would suggest a hardcore MMORPG player stick with it, I understand why you would want to stay away from it.

I don't mean to offend anyone by saying this, but people on this board tend to recommend their favorite MMO.  LoTRO fits what you want perfectly.

I do not suggest any games that are buy to play then pay to play. This meaning, you have to first purchase the game then pay a monthly fee.

Reason being, every single game that is out with that rule is incredibly BAD.

I played WoW since 2005, and will happily tell you that it's a bad game that was smartly constructed.

Honestly, I kept myself busy with Last Chaos for awhile. Who wouldn't? Hours upon endless hours of grinding.

And now I spend my days writing pointless reviews on all the free MMORPG's i've played, which totals at around 40. It makes time go by, and gives you something to do until a game worth your green comes out.

You don't NEED to buy the PC version of PSU *cough cough no cd-key*

    $10 / mo. too

I agree... just wait.  There hasn't been anything good out for a really long time.  Of the ones coming out, these are my most anticipated:

    - Pirates of the Burning Sea

    - Huxley

    - Warhammer

World of Warcraft, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest... all good role playing options if you must jump in now.  I can't stand Eve.  I wouldn't waste my time if i were you.

To OP, I'd say if you are familiar and liked WOW then LOTRO is probably a good game for you. Very limited PVP (Monster play only) and Roleplay is pretty nice as long as you pick the Landroval server.

If you want a really good community, try Saga of Ryzom, it's one of those games you either love or hate. No music, all ambient sound, pretty cool.

The most solid choice for you though is definitely Everquest 2. It wasn't too good on release, but has gotten better and better for a long time. You can grab the game and all 3 expansions for only 30$ now, with the free month. It's got so much content it would take 3 solid years to see it all, and it's all high quality content. I hop you like questing though :)

If you ever get sick of fantasy MMOs, try EvE online.

IF you enjoyed World of Warcraft the mmorpg a lot, then you should check out Anarchy Online. Diablo 2 + Anarchy Online = World of Warcraft. You can buy AO or download it for free. It also has a free trial. Sometimes they change the free trial from 2 weeks to 1 year!

Anarchy Online is where Blizzard got 50% of all their ideas for WoW. Tons of instancing, aka personal dungeons. Lots of mini-boss and boss camps spread out worldwide.  AO continues to have some of the most brutal dungeons out of every single mmorpg ever created. One example is Temple of Three Winds. There are no zones. Mess up, and there litterally is no where to run, since you can get the entire dungeon to come after you.... every single level. AO is sci-fi with fantasy undertones. You can still use swords, knives, melee weapons, etc...

I suggest you pick Martial Artist as your first character while you learn the game. Next easiest would be Soldier, Enforcer, then Adventurer. Adventurers have the easiest time shape-shifting. Physcists can fly. WoW is roughly 80% Level based and 20% Skill Based. AO is roughly 50% Level Based and 50% Skill Based. The buffing system in AO is another revolutionary feature no other mmorpg has come close to copying... you can perform surgery on yourself installing implants in different parts of your body. The high end game involves buffing to get buffs, to get the target buff. Installing implants to be able to get a certain implant in order to get the target implant.

Feel free to browse the AO forums on this site, and ask questions there.

AO was my first MMO i was completly lost and totally disoriented it was great !

I think it may be a really cool first MMO as it get all the features of ancient MMO and all the features of the "next" generation MMO. if you begin with AO all the other MMO will seem childish....

it's ideal if you want a true feeling of being in an another world, if you want to play easily and have fun, stay with WoW which is easy to grasp and really fun at least for your first leveling character, after that if you don't join a raiding guild it's of limited interrest (at least for me).

    good luck.

nota : AO look somewhat good with AA setting x4

The only way to find out what kind of a MMO that you like is to try out the current popular ones and possibly some of the asian MMO:s that are free to play.

And if you want roleplaying, try out EverQuest II or maybe Lord of the Rings Online but roleplaying wise I would go for EverQuest II.

Vanguard in its current state is way too buggy so forget about that one for now.

There really isn't that many options right now:

World of Warcraft, which you have played.

Lord of the Rings Online, the new kid on the block.

EverQuest II, a true fantasy roleplaying game.

Star Wars Galaxies, a sci-fi game in  the Star Wars universe.

Plus a bucket load of asian MMO:s where the majority is free to play.

Definitely go for LotRO. It's simple to learn and if you've already played WoW you'll pick it up right away. The EXP grind is basically set up around questing so if you love doing quests this is your game. Social aspects of the game were still really developing when I played in beta so I'm not really qualified to comment on them now but they seemed to be heading in a positive direction when I played. The graphics are simply wonderful even on the lowest settings so you'll have no issues there either. I didn't play after beta just because it simply wasn't a game for me but you sound as if you'll love it so give it a shot.

I to will agree with Bren also, cant beat it if ya love questing, crafting, socializing and more. Very easy to get into and doesnt take long at all to pick everything up. Im currently playing and new content coming in june is going to be pretty impressive to say the least. Theres 2 more content updates scheduled before winter hits, late fall at best. Things are starting to slowly change to keep things fresh so expect some good stuff soon. If you love grouping then this is the game. Give it a try and Im sure youll love it especially if your new to MMORPGs.

Hey everyone, thanks for the game advice, I really do appreciate it. I got the Everquest II 7 day trial the other day....wicked awesome. I agree that it is better than WoW....though (so far at least) there seems to be a lack in communication with others....I really don't see many other people on there, but that is definitely weighed out by everything else it has going for it. Thanks again.
