Does it matter what gender the person behind the toon is?

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

The latest article from MMORPG.com has stirred the pot once again on the topic of girls and gaming, guys and gender bending and such...so now lets do a poll on the topic.   I mean in my mind I don't care what gender the player is on the other side that is controlling the toon.   What I wish to know is if I team up with you will you get my character killed!

I've personally never cared.  Mainly because I actually play MMOs and don't treat them as a dating service.

I have to admit though, it's a little weird seeing that cute toon talk on Vent or Teamspeak and it's some guy with a voice deeper than mine.

    *tee hee*

It's getting harder and harder for gender benders to pull it off though anymore with the varies voice chat programs.  Although there are voice alteration programs I can usually hear the difference (at least from what I've heard so far).

Nope.  Until the chatting takes place outside the game...

I really don't care. Its just a game to me there's plenty of other places where a game isn't involved to go looking for something.

Honestly, it never comes up in average play. If I've been guilded or grouping with someone for a long time and we've talked a lot, I might be more interested because I'd just be more interested in getting to know the other person better, as I would with people I wanted to be friends with IRL. For the most part, I stick with "don't ask, don't tell", whether I am playing my own RL sex or the opposite one.

Why don't people get their panties all in a bunch about women playing male characters?

To answer your question.  I think the reason people do not get all upset about a woman that plays male toons is for the same reason they don't get upset when she wears mens clothing - it is more socially acceptable.   Why?  Who knows...who knows how the human mind works actually.   Think about it.  If you came home and you found your girlfriend/wife wearing only your clean pressed white dress shirt and panties...what are you going to do?  Throw her out of the house?  LOL!  I seriously doubt it.   Besides doesn't matter what we women wear...you guys still look at us with your tongues hanging out.

Hehe... If I came home and found my girlfriend wearing my clothes, I'd have to scratch my head and wonder when I became a lesbian. If I came home and found my husband in my clothes, I'd bitch him out for stretching the fabric. He's a lot bigger than me. :)

I guess I just can't figure out why it matters either way at all.

Actually, a lot of people try to find a mate on the internet. More than one would think. Why not real life? Well maybe they have issues, or shy or any number of things. I have dated online a few times and why? Because I do have issues in person, I have a mild form of Autism and my speech is a little weird and I'm really shy. So if I get to know someone ingame or anywhere else online, I know they probably won't judge me. I wouldn't keep my problems a secret, no, but I would let the person get to know me first before they know my few problems. I know it might sound weird to some of you, but it is actually pretty common these days. Like I said, one would be surprised by how many try to have a relationship over the internet. And sometimes it actually works out, rare, but it happens...but its rare for a relationship to work out in real life too so *shrug*

Just my opinion of course, I could very well be wrong, but this is from my own experiences.

I feel a lot more comfortable playing a male character for some reason.  Perhaps I'm insecure. :D  I don't have a problem with people creating characters of the opposite sex though.  It's a fantasy world and they can do what they want.

I think the thing that probably bothers most people is when a male is PRETENDING to be a female or a female PRETENDING to be male to further some agenda or to be treated differently. Now if the guy or girl playing the character comes right out and says I'm a guy or girl then there is no shiftiness going on and you know exactly who we are dealing with.

I remember when I played a female character before I had a mic and some guy was doing emotes to me and I was like "I'm a guy." He was like prove it and I said I can't I don't have a mic yet my 3 kids ruined the other one. He persisted to do emotes to my character until we booted him from the group because it was just getting to wierd. Also I have not made any female characters since then.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

I don't really see what the deal is, a toon is just a toon and the gender is just another option. So what if I'm not really a girl? I'm not really an elf either, acutally I don't know how to wield a sword in combat, oh, and I can't actually use magic in real life either... it's a game!

Yea that's basically the main problem, It's well and truly sickening knowing that there are people like that I just hope all future games have an in based voice chat.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

If you care what the gender behind the toon is, you should be logging onto E-Harmoney or some such site rather then an MMO.  As a guild leader I have often had to deal with girls in my guild.   In some instances we have had girls in our guild and they post pictures of themselves and it makes some of the guys act stupid around them.  People act stupid like they think they will get some action by playing the game.   I've made it a policy to treat everyone with an even hand, and try to disregard gender and age unless a pattern of immaturity starts to reveal itself.

I have also played several female toons because in some cases they look better then male counterparts.   One example was a Night elf I played in WoW.   I wanted the racial traits, but didn't want to look like Michael Jackson.  It is surprisngly silly how people will automatically assume you to be a female and treat you nicer like your going to "return the favor".   Always assume everyone is guy until proven otherwise, when proven otherwise, treat them like a guy.

What gender a person chooses doesn't really matter, I mean surely anyone has played Tomb Raider(or any other game) where you play a female while actually maybe being male? So the choice isn't a big deal. However, I think you can wonder who you are grouping with, for isntance, is knowing the ages of people in your group a big deal? Well,I guess in a way it comes down to what kind of experience is your priority ingame, a social experience, or a playing experience? For instance, the one experience(playing) where it doesn't matter what age/gender someone is behind the keyboard, or the other experience where people may want to be more social and create some sort of social-understanding beyond mindless play. For instance take the situation of knowing you have a 12 year in your group. Of course the maturity of the 12 year old needn't be questioned but knowing their age it may help knowing where that person is coming from in terms of the responses they make and the actions they take. Eg, this 12 year old ranting in your group, you have two options of intepretation- is this a person a raving looney? or is this person simply young and maybe immature? Your way of reacting to this may alter according to knowing their age or not knowing their age.

Why should a person care what gender is behind the keyboard? Seems trivial. /shrug

nope the real person's gender is of no consequence, im just there to play the game. male...female...who cares (or even should)

it doesn't matter what gender,  if i'm grouping with a male who plays a female toon, or female with male toon, the only thing i care about is if the person is nice & not a jerk

I didn't realize there were so many WoW clones...seeing WoW was the first MMO ever made..oh wait, wasn't there something before WoW, another MMO or 2 or 3 or ....

Nothing really to add to the thread other than I find it amusing watching the obvious male kids play female characters.

I voted for the zombie one. I'm not sure what it means, but zombies  are cool.

I voted no, but if i had a choice I prefer to play with female gamers for a few very basic (and I'll admit generalised) reasons.

    1. Better downtime conversation, there is more to the world than Sport, Cars and Ultimate Fighting

    2. Women multi-task better, the real female gamers I have known in guilds were on average better players than most males.

    3. Less aggressive and greedy behaviour, generally more generous and open to sharing in a NBG situation

    4. More open to RPing their characters, which is sadly lacking in this Post-WoW 'OMGROFLCOPTER' generation.

Maybe this just a reflection of my real life, the vast majority of my best friends are female. And no, I'm not gay before anyone asks :)

I have a whole family of characters from PnP RP days, which I always roll into whatever MMO I am playing, several of which are female. If someone has a real problem with a guy playing a female char, I've found its due to some insecurity on their part, not the cross gender player.

I just wish there were more female gamers and less testosterone driven, big-mouthed, posteuring morons.

Gender doesn't matter. It doesn't make someone, anyone a good player or a nice person. The individual personality does.

Whats even more entertaining is watching the adolescent males get pissed when they realise they just  over a dude. hahaha

Then jump on forums and act like they arent the ones with the problem!   -  ROFLMFAO!

I could really care less. Their gender, race, age, religion, none of it matters to me.

If I meet someone in a game that I really enjoy and we have a good time in the game together, I can't see why in the world any of those things would hinder and or help that.

i found it irritating to a point. where these people are allowed to be anything they like.

i play the female characters only and yet i am a 19 year old male. I do not like playing a male character at all.

but i am an experienced fighter, i know how to race wheel 2 wheel against other people in racing games, i know how to headshot when its required, i even know how to sabotage without raising too much suspicion so i know how it goes when some joe gets overly stupid. but i have also been an admin a league owner and clan leader at some point and ran it with complete maturity. the only reasons why these league clans and such have gone is because gender and racisism issues, i just disbanded them after that and never looked back.

i will never play Male Characters ever again, my reasons are never going to be broadcast. i now play females only, is because i feel more comfortable, and it seems i have more luck with Female characters big time. for me avatars are a big thing, but for everyone else, i do not care.

sorry for giving you all my life story.
