If you had a choice to chhose what gender you want for any charecter then why would you pick what your are not? Is it taht you have allways wanted to be of a different sex? Its just not right!
This is probably the poorest argument I have seen here in quite some time. Play what you are in real life? You do realize that we are talking about ROLE PLAYING games right? By your logic we should all pick the human race in all games because thats what we are all in real life. Nobody should ever pick an orc, because you are surely not an orc in the real world (although I have some big fat drunken friends who could pass off if their skin was green). It's an RPG and it's game. It's a Fantasy setting. If I wanted to always be what I was in real life i would never play an MMO, I would just sit in my chair and be myself.
Any man who gets pissed that other men have female avatars shouldn't be playing MMOs.
This is how it works:
Man sees woman avatar. Man fantasizes about woman avatar. Man fantasizes about woman behind woman avatar. Man finds out that there is a man behind woman avatar. Man questions his own sexuality. Man gets scared. Man gets angry. Man goes on mmorpg.com and says that having a female avatar makes you a fag.
/edit btw i have a female friend (a straight female friend) who only plays as male characters. She told me once that she does it to "fit in"
Moral of the story is that you shouldn't naturally assume that every female character you see is a sex-goddess in real life who wants to ride your cock if you'll only link her to your myspace and stalk her on AIM
I was starting to slowly convert my model files in wow so that all horde males would be an alliance female, and that all alliance males would be horde females. Then 2.0 came so I never got to do that, at least my dwarf priest was a troll So in my dreamland all guys would be playing girls.
the best part about lineage 2 was adjusting the camera to look up dresses. I played a dude in that game though
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
Ughh..I simply had to post again. The more I read this thread; the more I get a chuckle. I’m likely to go slightly off topic in my reply. This is something that has always troubled me in the age of internet male ego. Many men and women (or more likely teen boys and girls) act in a way that they wouldn’t dream of acting in person. I have several female gaming friends. They (basically) all say the same thing. Men hit on women in game, period. Some think its funny while others find it tedious.
I rolled a female toon many months back and there is a certain bias to be sure. I always play male characters and when I pop in game nothing really happens. I get the occasional invite for a party, etc. As the female character, I got offers for items, questions on if I needed help or gold, solicitations for RP. The list goes on and on.
I prefer to play male characters. Blame it on some massive ego; but, I just can’t get into the role of a female character in the RP environment. The female friends I have seem to take everything in stride and never seem to get too upset. They are well versed with the block tell feature in most games and have no qualms using it.
The whole idea of men leaning on women players has been around since the inception of online role playing. The anonymity of being online with a pseudonym makes people act in ways they cannot act in real life. It’s really quite sad that women players even have to contend with this. That said, we men have had our share of emo females that will use flirtation and cyber to get what they want or need. All genders are guilty of using others; though, not all people are guilty of it. Some of us just want to gather together and play the game.
A dear friend of mine told me of how her undead warlock was getting hit on left and right on a WoW RP server. Her words were basically “An undead woman…likely dried up and cracked skin, unpleasant aroma…jesus…will men do anything?! Even as undead I’m not safe.” Granted, I got a huge laugh out of that; but, it does speak volumes of why some people play.
In the end, it’s the player that “falls” for such manipulations that is at fault. Who gives a darn what gender is played by what person? Those of us that have played online for any more then a year know the signs to look out for. It’s not men playing women or women playing men that are the problem. It is the OOC drama that can stem from it when someone falls for such people. If you get mixed up in a world where you can’t see the person, in a world where all you have to know the other by is typed word, what does that say about you?
If I feel like I want to play a grumpy swearing ale swigging male dwarf that likes to smash orcs why should I be limited to a stumpy barmaiden looking dwarf.
well as far as i know, i would not know, i never had to contend with the social side because i never interacted with anyone online, not even on shooting games or racing games.
the only way to interact for me online is the forums, but i still have to be very wary of people who want to start arguements, eg. People who are completly ignorant to the obvious. so i try to avoid any unwanted attention which i have just gotten away with the other day on this forum. but apart from that i would not make online friends or attempt conversation not even for help.
but i like to play any female character, and that will never change for me. but why would anyone would want to use the character for a porm accesory or sex object?
Xan, just RP for a bit in some games and you'll soon see how it's possible. I suppose I sound cynical; but, it's what I've seen in five years of online role playing games.
i think i got hit on once playing a female character, and I think it might have been a joke since my name was 'Reallyadude' I've played a female dwarf priest on an RP server, a troll hunter on RP server, aN Orc Shamn on RP server, all females, never hit on once.
sure someone might walk up to me and /dance, but hey I do that all the time to draenai chicks when I see them it's just wanting to see the dance is all.
This one time on my troll warrior I was waiting outside DM north and some night elf came outside the instance, so I started dancing with her, then she took her cloths off, so I did to, it was sexy dancing. Obviously it was a guy, and he showed me his characters sexy dance and I showed him mine, it wouldn't have been any cooler or less cool if he was an actual girl and it wouldn't have been cool at all if we both had dude characters.

I don't really care a lot about the gender of the person I'm playing with. But I usualy ask if the person joins my guild or starts playing more often with me, just to know how polite I must be, since I usualy say more bad words than most people, and how much of my aggressive part I can show lol. Other than that I really don't give a damn. I'm not really into virtual dating, y'know.

Heres my opinion on the fact.. personally i like to play female characters ( and i am a Guy yes) for the reason being if i have to stare at the a$$ of something for aslong as i feel like playing.. why not it be something i like to look at and to me the slnder body of a female toon is much easyer on the eyes then a bulking hulk of heman lol
Originally posted by maniacfox I don't really see what the deal is, a toon is just a toon and the gender is just another option. So what if I'm not really a girl? I'm not really an elf either, acutally I don't know how to wield a sword in combat, oh, and I can't actually use magic in real life either... it's a game!
This is the most perfect post on this subject. I couldn't say it better.
It's a game. Anyone who treats someone differently based on their character's gender is creepy anyway. If you really play a great deal with a certain person, and get to know them as a person instead of a character, that's different. I know some people from MMOs personally, and we can carry on a sort of friendship outside of the game, even though we are far away. I also play sometimes with people I already knew from "real life." The point I am trying to get across is that I treat all characters I meet in the game as just that--characters, until I have known them for a while and befriend them.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman
I don't care becuase their all males unless there two toons that always play together and they are a couple.

Well, get with the program. I use magic all the time, especially in tight situations. And I can't hardly get through the day without drawing a sword and lopping off someone's head.
i dont care if the toon is male or female as long as the person behind it doesnt try to gain something from playing the female toon .. im just as likely to help a male toon as a female one if the person playing isnt TRYING to pull a fast one and get something for free because of the gender of the toon
.....Think about it. If you came home and you found your girlfriend/wife wearing only your clean pressed white dress shirt and panties...what are you going to do?......
I'd be a little upset. I only have one clean pressed white dress shirt and I wear it for all 5 of the weekdays straight. It's a guy thing, really......
I like staring at a womens rear more than a guys too, but it doesnt mean I want to be one.
theres enough female toons in MMO's to stare at and check out.
besides, I dont want the unwanted attention. if a guy gets his jollies from looking at his own female toon so much to play them primarily in an MMO, imagine how he must feel to have someone else admire his female toon made-to-order.
It just comes down to attention really. the excuse of "rather look at a female than a male" is nothing more than an excuse. theres plenty of other people playing female toons to look at. they just like BEING one and having the extra attention and oogles (or maybe a closet barbie fanatic?). has nothing at all to do with what they prefer to look at.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Actually, in EQ 2 I play a female troll bezerker named "Urexwife". Isn't really sexy at all, isn't enjoyable to oogle, and I'm not usually mistaken for a female player. At least I think not, as I have never been hit on yet by a guy.....
I would also like to play a short, fat, balding, manic middle age man in a MMORPG, but none of the developers seem to think that would be popular....go figure.
Everyone wants to look like Brad Pitt, or Angelina Jolie. I want to look like Meatloaf....
What a world? Anyone else think the Wicked Witch of the West was hot?
I nearly always roll female characters. I've been with the same guild for years, since Shadowbane beta, though we don't always play the same game. Most of the guys seem to roll female characters, too. A large number of them are in their 30s or older and married with kids. Some of their spouses play. My husband is in the same guild. There are gay men and women in our guild. None of us care, we just enjoy ourselves. None of us worry about what the people in the rest of the game are IRL, either.
Like Nechia, if gender mattered, I would probably choose with game options in mind. I also primarily enjoy skull bashing and melee. I suppose, however, like the one lad explained, that RL gender would be an issue if I were looking for love in an MMO. I suppose he just has to be extra careful or make sure he chats to the person via TS before they become romantically involved. Evidently, there are now online dating sites that cater to gamers. Maybe that's a safer option?
excuse to rather look at a female then a male...... if its an excuse then by god im sticking with it... and in any case.. who the hell are you to say what im thinking or anyone else.. we have our reasons and they may be differant all that matters is what ever the reason is we are having fun playing a game the way we want. i dont use my female toons to my advantage i dont roleplay so there is no need for me to stick to what i am in real life.. and if anyone asks " are you really a girl" i tell them "NO Im a dude" and thats the end of that
I've found it pretty funny when a female guildmate pops into vent and all the guys are stumbling over themselves to be helpful/chivalrous to get her attention like a bunch of dogs in heat.
Anyway, it's just human nature.
Maybe it's kind of nice for girls who don't get noticed in real life to all the sudden be the center of attention.

"Oh for the love of all that is holy - not this!" it fits my view on this gender faking thing perfectly!
Seriously? I have no problem with what people play their characters as, male or female, it doesn't matter, it's a game, in some RPG's and MMORPG's I've found myself making female characters just to look at a game story from a different point of view or to pick on the uptight priestess and paladins that you see quite often roleplaying in games
As some people have said though, I agree with them, it shouldn't be a problem if they're honest about what gender they are out of game, it's when they try to fake their gender in real life that it starts getting personal.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
It does not matter in the least to me what gender the person controlling the avatar is. I am a roleplayer and when I create a character I create it based on the role the avatar will play.
