Maturity level

One thing I've noticed about EQ2 that every review, including this one, missed, is the relative maturity of the player base compared to other MMOs.  I thought WoW was a good game, but amount of kiddies/Chuck Norris jokes/ur mom lawlz crowd was too much. EQ2 is really a breath of fresh air in that respect, gameplay mechanics aside. Anyone else have that experience?

In my many years of EQ and EQ2 game playing I have to agree with you, the EQ community has generally been more mature than the rest of the MMOs I Have tried.

Well I attempted to read this article just to fast forward to the end. But in the end it states if you want questing/tradeskills eq is for you if u want a more pvp WOW. As for maturity level that is only due to the fact that WOW has a gazillion subscribers as EQ 2 has a spect compared. If the tables were reverse you would see the maturity lvl in EQ2 low and WOW like eq2 is.  EQ2 has dedicated everquest hardcore gamers. People who just love everquest and everything about it. I can remember play everquest back in 2000 and maturity lvl wasn't as high as everquest is now. In my opinion the more people you have playing a certain game you will see the maturity level go down. WoW has kids playing if from low teens to probably kids i dont know the youngest but im sure its a low one. Thats why the mess up raids and dont know what there doing when they finaly do reach the high end parts of the game. Because i remember back in 2000 Training people in Everquest laughin my ass off because thats what you could do to piss people off. Theres mature people on WOW just have to find them within the 8 million (last reports) of gamers most in china (figures). Its just numbers, you cant get 8 million mature players is where im going with this. a good percent arnt. Im not pro wow (i hate it) but i have to point out why it seems less mature vs other mmos.

Yeah, I made a thread about the community in EQ2 a few days ago.  It's definitely a breath of fresh air.  A player even paid my way to take a boat to the area where you get the secondary tradeskill.  He also gave me a lot of information about crafting.

    Looking for something new.

IF I may, ffxi has a pretty good community as well, and I think it is due to the fact that everything takes more time to accomplish, and all the impatient, want to rush to endgame players give up before they even get their subjob. In any case, yeah eq2 and ffxi, are some of the best communities.
  • lemons24lemons24 Member Posts: 3
I didn't know that about ffxi. I'd heard it primarily had a non-English speaking player base, so I haven't tried it out. Is that true? I may have to give it a shot if it has a free trial.

It would be interesting to see some kind of demographic breakdown on these games that had the actual ages of the gamers, because I suspect that part of the reason EQ2 seems more mature is that the player base actually IS older.

The thing I love most about EQ2 is the player base. They aren't childish or jerks. I've posted about how wonderful they are several times on here. Run by healings, the giving of platinum to random players, random presents... all from players. And I don't think I've ever seen leetspeak in the ooc channels on there. The player base is different from any other game I've ever played online.

I completely agree with JPR1985, FFXI and EQ2 has the best communities, with FFXI a step ahead of EQ2. If you wanna try FFXI (for free), you need a buddy key from someone who bought the game.

Your question: English is the major language in FFXI, but there's a lot of Japanese too. And German + French were added in a patch a couple of months ago. This isn't a problem since the game has a well-working autotranslate.

EQ2 has an absolutely amazing, mature community.  Even the "kids" that play EQ2 play in a more mature way.  Its very "buisness-like" but still maintians a high level of optimism and everyone has fun.  I think anygame that is without Norris jokes is perfect.

    It's a funny barometer, but it's true!

One thing I noticed when I started playing EQ2 was the relative lack of leetspeek. It was like, "Ah, that's nice". I didn't even realize how annoying it was until it was (mostly) gone, hehe.

I think the pvp server may be about the same as WoW maturity level.  It's the competitiveness that brings out that kind of behavior in people.

Btw Chuck norris heard what you said.  Sattelites have detected a roundhouse kick approaching your house at such an unheard of speed, that according to Einstein it should hit yesterday.  I should probably remind you that most house insurance policies have a "If you piss off chuck norris its your own damn fault and we aren't paying for it" clause.

You are the cancer killing MMORPGs. Even if your initial statement is correct, it gets disregarded.

I play for the community, and I lurk for a very long time before I consider buying, but EQ2 seems very promising. Anymore personal stories of people being awesome?

PS: Is there a free trial?

PPS: Is there a method of payment other than credit card/paypal? (Eg. Payment by phone/gamecards?)
  • Kriminal99Kriminal99 Member Posts: 377

I believe they accept souls as payment as well.

I stopped playing EQ2 some time back, more due to burn out than the game itself, but I will add this. I played on Runnyeye, one of the EU servers, and found the community excellent, friendly  and welcoming. I'll try to give you an example, it wont fit to you, but it shows the kind of people playing.

My 8 year old son had a character on my account he would play at weekends, any group he joined I would demand he tell them how old he is. We tried a WoW trial at the same time and most times when i asked him to do the same he would very often be kicked from the group or teased until he didnt want to play. In EQ2 he was welcomed, praised and made regular friends who would contact him to group when he came online. These ranged from teens to 40+ adults and all showed kindness and tolerance, he even got invited to a guild on his own merit (he was a damn good little tank :) ) outside of the guild i was already in.

Good People in EQ2, coming in a close second would be CoH who treat him in a similar manner.

I have lots of stories of people being awsome on there. Heck, I've even braodcasted a public thank you to people who've been cool to me on the /ooc channel. Unfortunately, we still have some dipwads in the game though not as many as seems to be with other games.

There is a free trial. Play The Fae/Trial of the Isle. You get to play the newbie areas. On the Isle you don't get to go past lvl 10 though. Not sure about the Fae since I haven't played that trial. Just go to everquest2.com and the link for the trial will be on the front page.

You can buy game cards. Just go to Best Buy or EB Games or some other place like that.

Thanks for the replies guys ^_^

Tamalan - That's pretty awesome, glad to see you're raising a good tank, need more of them XD

Moirae - Thanks for that, I'll get right on it. :)

You're right, even though I had not really thought of it until I started playing LOTRO for a while. People tell me that LOTRO chat is a lot better than WOW - if so, then WOW must be REALLY bad, because I have certainly seen a high percentage of immaturity there.
  • MarchusMarchus Member Posts: 88
I'll just go ahead and say I disagree. EQ2 is just as bad as WoW. The only difference is people get bored with EQ2 and the lack of decent PvP and alternative activities  post-40 and on PVP servers at least will lock their exp, or just quit. However, I play on Vox, which is one of the least populated servers in existence and any channel those pre-40 players have access to is still constantly filled with Chuck Norris jokes and e-drama. All that's really different is that you know what channels to turn off in order to avoid it.

I still do not fully understand what it is about Chuck Norris. LOL.

I am not subscribed to EQ 2, when i tested it I liked it but something was missing, but the people I know that play Vanguard and EQ 2 are awesome and all very mature.

I am seriously considering getting a station pass to play Vanguard and EQ 2, but I am somewhat waiting on the new expansion.

Let me tell you this. If Neriak is ANY indication at all of what to expect from the devs in Kunark... it'll be the best damn expansion to any game to date. TONS of evils are packing up their stuff and moving to Neriak. It really is cool to see how much heart and soul these devs are putting into this game.

    He was joking...  I think.

Yes, there is a free trial.  Everquest2.com has a link to it right on the home page.

As for payment, they have game cards.  SOE is probably the best publisher in the MMO world as far as having readily available game cards, etc.  You should be able to get them at any game store, and probably some more general stores that happen to also sell games.

I loath playing evil because I don't like freeport in the least. But Neriak is great. I've never had so much fun playing evil as I have in Neriak. And its free content too.

I completely agree with OP. Maturity level of community is huge deal for me. I think eg WoW is a good game and I did get to level 60 there but I simply couldn´t stay there because there is way too many downright obnoxius people in the community.
  • RizlawRizlaw Member UncommonPosts: 150
EQ has more of a community and tends have players who are more mature. This is probably because it's been around longer than other MMO such as WoW
  • ArleonenisArleonenis Member Posts: 69

Unfortunetly i cant agree with OP, community was the reason i left EQ2.

Game is pretty well balanced considering power of character and needed raid loot to achieve that with one exception: ranger (unfortunetly my char becouse this was only one i liked)

When you play end game ranger you start to see true nature of the peoples. Mostly here is bow issue. Rangers are only DD, nothing in utility really, but to be good dps they require raid quality bow, without it no matter how hard they try they are crappy dps, its extremally hard to achieve anything better than 1.1-1.6k dps with raincaller, depending on encounter.

Unfortunetly in few guilds i was in whenever bow droped bow went to one of the oldest member that have more dkp points, no matter of his class, warrior or scout. No one think about fellow guildies even when i asked before joining if there is NBG (need before greed and i ask always) and got positive answer (wouldnt join if it wasnt) when phat loot drop everyone is jumping on it and raid leader didnt cared which profession need it and which one want it just for show (pimp up toon). Community seemed nice at all just to this critical moment when true face is showed, any sane raid leader want improve raid force in best way it can and leaving one of most active raid dps with subpar equipment isnt best way to do it.

And before you start bashing (without knowing profession) that i was pissed before i didnt get it... nope i was pissed other rangers in guild was treated the same way, i dont care if i get it or other ranger get it, it isnt wasted but when warrior get that bow becouse of "stronger pull" once per raid time becouse pulling is mostly body pull as mobs are social than i think there is a big issue.

(edit spelling, im not native english speaker (splitpaw is euro server)
