Lol.. I love how they can pull any fantastical idea out of their hats, dragons, pegasus, unicorns... but ya gotta accurately reflect the attitudes with regards to sex, from a particular period, for full immersion.
When logic fails...
So True...so very very true.
As for all those accusing the OP as wasting time on this subject...this is a debate. OMG I've seen people argue over semantics, grammer and spelling....please tell me that isnt a waste of time. Not interested in debating...move on to the next post.
This issue brought before us, brethren, concerns all mankind!
Think that proves my point well enough. Yeah, discrimination is a bad thing, but calling something brotherhood instead of fellowship is such a silly detail, it simply does not deserve such attention. If you would like to fight discrimination start with something more offending, not something ridiculous like this. Talking about why Lara Croft is so popular, and talking about women models being close to nude makes more sense than this, methinks.
But then again, we (the male populus) are not the only ones to blame for this. I mean sure, in this consumer driven society it's only natural that women appear semi-naked everywhere, for that is what us males (presumably) want to see all the time. But step back a second and think about all the ass-shaking, boobie-showing RnB and Rap female stars who are more than happy to show their body as they would a product. This discussion is a double edged sword, for we men are not the sole reason why women appear half-nude on MTV and in games all the times, it's part of the new american pop culture I guess, led by brainless yet successful women like little miss Hilton, Britney and Lindsay.
Just wanted to drop a quick comment before this gets out of hand.
Seriously, I really understand the OP point of view and I must admit that brotherhood is a little dude oriented but frankly, do you honestly think that the dev named that game function to piss off every girls on the planet?
Naaa!
I believe the word “union” would be an overall better term. Then again, someone might jump the boat and say, Union is assiociated to marriage in certain cultures. Every word can be seen badly, it really depends on your point of view. What you seek is what you get.
While I’m sure you’re all bright folks that all have a degree in something, I’m sure you understand that Brotherhood does not mean “Boys only”. It’s just a word that is being used in a masculin form. It’s a bit like french where when you have the choice to use a masculine or femine version, if you’re using it to display a generality of a subject, then the masculin becomes the default.
I actually agree with you to a degree on this one Teala.
It's really not the term "brotherhood" that bothers me, because honestly, I could care less. What kinda urks me is that there is ENTIRE host of alternatives terms of phrase for this specific feature and they STILL decide to name it somewhat gender specific. I don't find it sexist as much as I find it plain ass lazy.
Mind you I'm fairly habitualized to the little stuff like this now, been gaming with boys far to long to know that they just simply do not think of these "types" of things.

With that being said I am not, I repeat, not a feminazi, I just thought that SOE didn't even bother to think about word choice "at all" and seemed to neglect the fact that, "yes Joe...there really are female gamers." and decided to go with a term with the conatation that these games are designed by guys for guys(hence booby sliders and jiggle vision) and there is no female gamers. ::sighs:: I've been at odds with game designers over this topic for a long time. Not just the use of certain words but also their lack of foresight when designing their games. Guy gamers are all for us girls to play these games, but if we so much as make a suggestion that implies it should be gender friendly - well we crossed this weird line of you can play but only by our terms. For instance EA is never going to add female avatars to a game like "BF2". Which really annoys me to no end. They don't even reply to e-mails regarding the topic.
Anyway...what does it matter the guys(males) will never see it from our point of view. I'll shut up about this now. Seems I was wrong to think that guys would even be somewhat sympathetic to this issue.

They should rename it to The Pink Sisterhood of Love.
There are many, many more synonyms... I'll leave you to your inept justifications that you pull out of your hat.
And you're point? That just proves that it's a just fine name for a group that has no sexist regards. I thought you were trying to defend the womanized side?

Yes, the gaming industry is among those where women are yet to reach equality, but they never will, since the new trend (and I don't know how women can swallow this with their pride) seen in MTV (and teenagers learn from that) is that women are but the bottom-shaking and boobie-size. Check out you-tube and the gazillion underaged girls shaking their bottoms in front of their webcams to some BS rap or rnb song.
Anyway, my point is "brotherhood" is but a sidenote if you compare it to other more irritating discrimination issues.

Whats wrong with huge boobies and miniskirts?!
If you don't like it then STFU and GTFO!
There is the answer to any questions regarding why guys and girls alike tend to discriminate in-game "female" players.

I am male and I understand and completely agree. What some people fail to see is that if you want to make the gaming world include men and women you must be gender neutral or someone is getting the short end of the stick. It is fun to game with men and women, and people from all over the world. Why would you want to limit your in game social and gaming variety by not creating an environment that is friendly to everyone who players the game? It is obviously issue enough for a female player of vanguard to discuss and for many others to agree with, I don't think it is fair to just blow off with "less qq more pew pew." Gender neutral terms promote equality, diversity and opportunity to all people. While this is not possible with all languages (masculine and feminine conjugations), were talking in English and we have the opportunity to be inclusive. Not trying to use a better word to include all the players of a game says to me that they didn't even think about it because no one really said anything, which is why I'm glad at least Teala posted about it.
I have the time to discuss gaming philosophy on a gaming forum, and I personally don't think that my time discussing it is wasted.
This thread fails bigtime. It's a classic chick-whine about chick-crap that no one but a female ( & a small portion of them, might I add) would care about.

Oh yea...well in the immortal words of Pat Benetar, "put up your dukes and lets get down to it..."
"To the guys that play Vangaurd, how would you feel if it turned around and it was called "sisterhood" - hehehe do you think it would be appropriate? I mean in my mind sisterhood looks and sounds better then brotherhood so what would be wrong with sisterhood?"
It would be odd and it's already odd to call it the brotherhood but humm...
then I look at a game like CNC with The Brotherhood of Nod and I never heard any complaining that it should be known as the sisterhood of nod.
<--- she's the Nod commander until the return of Kane.
Not trying to start a big bruhaha or seem to come across as a feminazi or something, but isn't the term "Brotherhood" kinda the wrong word to be using in place of the Fellowship system? I dunno about any of the other females that play Vanguard but this kinda strikes me as being considered a second class person to males of our species by SOE/Sigil. Again...I'm not some feminist nut case I'm just little average Jill gamer here OK. Surely SOE realizes that this word is seriously the wrong word to be used in this instance. To the guys that play Vangaurd, how would you feel if it turned around and it was called "sisterhood" - hehehe do you think it would be appropriate? I mean in my mind sisterhood looks and sounds better then brotherhood so what would be wrong with sisterhood? Any other females feel a bit bothered by this term brotherhood?
Okay this PC crap has got to go. It just has to. On onehand you have women screaming equal treatment with men, on the other hand theyll glare at you if you dont hold a door, or pay for the date, or buy them flowers. But oh yeah they want equal treatment. (as long as you throw in the perks).
Okay that little rant aside. lets be as un PC as possible. You are obviously troubled about the use of the word brotherhood when elsewhere women have been, are, and will be exploited. And this is your biggest concern?
Okay I digress, im not trying to be mean or rude. But Cmon, youve really gotta invest your time elsewhere, youve gotta be able to find a bigger fish than that to fry.
P.S. I teach both my daughters that what you can do or cant do as a person hasnt a thing to do with your gender. But you cant explect equal treatment AND preferential treatment as a woman in this day and age.

Who asked for equal treatment and preferential treatment...we're discussing the word chosen by SOE to depict EXP sharing system. LOL! What do you think this has something to do with me asking for more exp then a guy or something if we participate in this system or what? All I am asking is why didn't SOE consider a different word to be used that was a little more gender inclusive. Talk about me getting my panties in a wad...this guy has me beat.
SOE should also redistribute the game in 2 versions
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Vanguard: Saga of Heroines
I don't know... I think ' Vanguard: Saga of She'roes ' sounds better. As far as sisterhood, like i said anyone concerned with that is being just as silly as someone concerned with brotherhood.
I don't know about the Pink sisterhood though pink is too light, and makes me look even more pale.

Think of what male sympathy to this cause would mean!"unisex gaming groups" today
no boobie-slider tomowrrow
no more miniskirts next week!
Do we want that?!
Truth be told I understand where you are coming from, and agree with you (don't look at me like that, me brothers, I am only saying it to get in her pants ... joking).
I too would like to see women more elevated on an intellectual level, I am so bored of the "no substance, only looks" ideology. I am past the age of looking only for a great body, I look for a great person.

SOE should also redistribute the game in 2 versions
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
and
Vanguard: Saga of Heroines

Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

It is wrong ... wait, since it's my taste we're talking about here ... in is not interesting enough if a woman is as shallow as a miniskirt and a big boob!
I am saying women are more than that, not that I don't look at a good looking girl passing by on the street.

Come back when you actually make some sense.die.
This thread fails bigtime. It's a classic chick-whine about chick-crap that no one but a female ( & a small portion of them, might I add) would care about.
Na, you came here looking to pick a fight. Females make poor trolls? Who knew...

SOE should have known better though.
They always make the wrong decisions in everything they do.
They continue to prove it,.
They should have know changing fellowships to brotherhood would have made females complain, cause females love to complain.
I blame Jeff Butler. if fellowships would have been impleMENted correctly the first time around, this would have never happened.
