So is Vanguard dead?

I quit VG about a month and a half ago...not because of the poor performance, or the bugs...but because I couldn't play the class I wanted to (Rogue) with the time and patience I had available to dedicate to a computer game. Since then I've heard little blips about the game collapsing, mass subscription cancelling, a buyout, and now server merges.

So...is it dying already, or do the new developers have actual plans to completely renovate the game, and if so does anyone know what direction it is going to be taken in?

When I first got the game, I was pretty much thinking the same as you. Except, I had lots of time to dedicate to a video game, however grinding is something I don't like doing, and is something this game had a lot of, and therefore it didn't hold my interest. I read up on it when I got it, and it seemed like the Ultimate MMORPG, and when I played it... it was great.... until I hit the grind from 10-13 (where I stopped). I haven't heard anything about it, but I wouldn't be surprised that the game is dying.

They created the game to appeal to the hardcore gamers, but then they lost that demographic when they tried to appeal to a broader audience, similar to the way WoW does. Hardcore gamers didn't like this, and left, and the broader audience they were trying to attract are still playing WoW. So they pretty much kicked their current players in the face, and expected them to stick around. I wouldn't be surprised that the game is dying.

Yup i didn't enjoy the grind after level 10 too : The thing is aswel that it just isn't fun gaining XP in Vanguard like it can be in other games like WOW from time to time.

The game was good, no doubt about that. It looked and played fantastically. The only problem was that it was too big, with not enough to do. It looked incredibly good, and that was also nice... but when you are running to the next questing/grinding spot... either I want to have more to do in between those areas, or I want those areas smaller. The game was awesome when I played it, I only stopped because I had to take turns on the computer that could run it with my dad, and that just wasn't cutting it in a game like this.

Also, something that definitly killed it for me, like the first time I played WoW, was that I had no one to play the game with. If you don't have someone to play with, ANY game can be boring :-/.

Hey look.  Someone created another is VG dead thread with an alt account.

Wait!  This thread is different because it starts with so.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

Not according to the 150 or so in my guild. I play everyday and a few weeks ago there was a fairly big drop in numbers but its picked back up and going strong. Always new players and the ones that have been around for a while now really love it and are in for a long time. Its only getting bigger and better so its actually the opposite.

    it was never alive

Is it dead? No. Not yet.

Is it on life support? Yes.

The true state of the game, however, won't be known until they merge servers in a few weeks.

This is not an "alt account"....I've never posted, or even been on, this site before today.

There truly are people out there who just play the games, and rarely feel the need to talk about them.

leveling any character on this game is something that will take time. it is not WoW and hopefully never will be. (and a little secret --- Rogues are one of the best DPS classes in the game at higher levels and wonderful little tricks when you take up poison and such)

A MMO is like life. It is something to cherish and enjoy upon in it journey. So why race to the end of it. In life at the end you die.

so you're telling me all 150 players are always online when you play? i highly doubt it, this game has been going down hill even before SoE bought it from sigil, if you dont believe me just look at most of the starting towns majority of the players there are crafters not adventurers...halgarad barely reaches 10+ people all day dahknarg is even worse, tursh is a good spot for crafters to hang out, rindol field shouldnt even be considered a town because its so small compared to other cities, leth nurae is filled with crafters but most of the time there arent more than 15 players there since its so big...

i'd say if your guild is a raiding guild you'd have 50 people max that logs on, and if its a casual guild you'd probably have around 30 people who logs on when you do, but 150? im sure 25% of em are alts anyway...

Vanguard is now in the hands of SOE. Can someone print out a toe tag?

    Unaware of the Jestor?

    Its probably dead right now.

There are basic root level problems with the way the game was encoded that have never been addressed. These effect they way that your hardware runs the game. The short version is that the game fails to take advantage of any of the advanatges of modern GPU hardware and makes your CPU sweat overtime just to do basic functions. The development staff has been cut in half and they have given no indication that they are any closer to changing these root level problems (assuming they can). Beyond that, you have a ton of midnight oil content at the higher levels that was obviously thrown out at the last moment as a desperate attempt to fill the world. This stuff would all need to be rewritten -- but given the root level problems I doubt they can do that.

The server populations are dropping from week to week and it looks like there are literally only about 800 players on each server willing to stick it out. The fansites are all filled with bitter ex-players and the "vanbois" have vanshed into the web.

I'm not sure what SOE criterion will be for turning out the lights. Most people seem to think they'll keep it around to fill out their station pass system.

But as far as being a playable MMO -- its already died.

Keep the faith brother.  According to Riotact007 it is not only alive but growing.  Ain't that a kick in the pants?  Maybe VG is making a turnaround.   At this rate VG will top the video games sales charts!

I'm just saying, when this thread was started there was already one thread right there, with the exact same title, in plane view, and impossible to miss.

And I forgot the question mark at the end of my first sentence.  It's supposed to be put forth as a question, not a statement.  My bad.

    No the games not dead.

How exactly do a bunch of people that don't play the game know if it's dead or alive anyways?

    Wish Darkfall would release.

It's hanging on by a thread, but I still see some potential if Sony acts fast.

i've played this game since february until may and quit, my character's name is ruthless on the thunderaxe server level 27 or 28 adventure and level 30 weaponsmith...i've already travelled to most of the places on all 3 continents ( only places i couldnt get to was the level 30+ areas where the monsters aggro from far as hell)

if you guys read my post from earlier it explains why this game is going downhill...

If the tragic premature release, terribly generic feel of the whole game,  the identity crisis btw wow and eq, bad press, successive confessions from Brad, patches gone borged, people who left in hordes, Sigil shut down, 50 developers fired, the premature adoption by SOE and the upcoming server merges have not convinced you about the vivacity of the game, what will?

To add to that the game was just short of having it's servers turned off were it not for Smed coming in at the last minute to save it like Spiderman.  However, you have to admire the tenacity of the VG fans.  They don't seem to be as hostle as they were when we told them initially how bad the game was.  I think they realize that the servers may be shut down any day now.

Care to elaborate on that for those of us that were unaware that the servers were about to be shut off?

    Got some inside information perhaps?

Just speculation.  If they keep bleeding Subs how can they keep the lights on?  Maybe in like the Matrix Online but what is the breaking point?

Edit:  However, if SOE did not buy VG it would be history and we would not be talking about it right now.  When Sigil fired all their Employees in the parking lot they were out of money.
