I think the funniest thing I heard was how LOTRO ripped off WoW's UI. If you look at AC2 and compare it to LOTRO, you know where Turbine copied it from... There own game.
For some reason people think that every MMO is copying from WoW. If WoW was the only MMO that you played, I could understand why you would think that. MMOs copied from MUDs, MUDs copied from pen an paper RPGs, etc.
That's simply because people know nothing other than WoW, then the comparisons from WoW to other games.
And pleasee. just please don't reply to any post with the 8 mill subs, and how WoW's better than others just cause of that.
For ME, WoW got extremely repetitive, and ofcourse I quited, I was also tired of the class unbalance and the crying about nerf this, nerf that.. Let alone the community
Most of WoW was copied from or improved on features from other games. UO paved the way for a lot of the features used so many other games. UO was the cutting edge of MMO's and the rest followed improving on ideas.
I have not played LOTRO But turbine has enjoyed pretty good success with there own stuff. Asherons call had a great big following for a long time. The original 2 year story line of AC made you feel as if you where part of something bigger, once MS started sticking there fingers in it it went sounth from there. The reason the second was such a flop was not due to the engine as much as die hard Asherons call fans loved the original combat system. It simply did not have the same magic as the first one.
Turbine has some diehard gamers that are the devs and unless things changed since i last spoke with any of them, they put a lot of heart into what they develop.
Half Life ripped off of Doom because it has guns, a 1st person view, a health meter, monsters, walls, health packs, ect. Sounds kind of stupid doesn't it? WC, SC and C&C ripped off of Dune2 because they have resource management, you can build structures and send lots of units to fight eachother and dstroy a base. Sounds stupid also right?
Blizzard took features people LIKED from past MMORPGs, removed most of the garbage people disliked and put it all together in a polished, more acessible package. They didn't go out to make an overlycomplicated MMORPG that would appeal to only a few people. They made something the hardcore players can sink their teeth into and a casual game you can play for an hour or so. Thats what was new. They made MMORPGs really fun for lots of people who found them rather boring. They got it all in 1 package and added even more stuff, something other developers couldn't manage. Did they invent a particular feature? Not so sure. But they sure made plenty of those features better, since 8 million people never wanted to play any single MMORPG before WOW. Got a problem with that? Get a life. No one forces you to play it, since there are so many other MMORPGs out there. Got a problem with those who think its great? Get another life, because yours is much too empty, since you're worrying about a game you hate and have no interest in=)
Well, when we look at the big picture we can see both sides to it. WoW players love WoW, although a lot know nothing about any game other then WoW, so when they see a new game they feel the urge to post something and they do, all whiling annoying people who don't care about what they think, since they don't know that much about other games. Then we have people that bash on WoW, even though WoW is a fairly good MMO, but like all MMOs, it gets repetitive and boring after a while and you move on. So, this thread started out wanting to make all MMO players aware that it doesn't matter what MMO we play, what matters is that we play MMOs and that is what unites us under this one idea; All gamers are created equal! Well, FPS probally take more skill then MMOs, since MMOs just require you to devote lots of time, while FPS rely on reflexes, reaction time and awarness, then we got RPGs, those are fine, but still only require time and I guess some strategy, like planning and stuff of and we gots RTS and TBS those are cool and require planning and thinking, but yea. ALL GAMERS CREATED EQUAL! JOIN ME IN BATTLE!!! ....
