It seems they gave all veteral players that cancelled their accounts b4 the NGE a 14 day trial. I'm gonna use that and see for my self what happened to SWG.
Actually, returning vets can get a 21 day vet trial by going to the SOE customer support Chat, and asking " is the 21day Veteran trial applicable to my account? " the tech will say, they will check and send you an email, normaly you won't get an email, and you just try to log into the game, if it lets you it's activated. (confirmed by 4 vets in my guild that this is the normal way of doing it)
So far as a Vet that is still playing, The game has progressed above the simplistic nature of the NGE, there is an expertise system as well as a return/rewrite of the Creature handler. Combat in general is now more difficult than it was after the NGE was launched.
Crafting Weapons and Armor seems usless as there is no decay, but with Reverse engineering of junk and looted armor, a Munitions crafter will defenitly find work in the way of making Armor attachments and Weapon attachments, as well as power ups (buffs armor/weapon with a numerical value to a stat for a period of time)
Currently a lot of the High end content is PvP driven these days with Restus. I still miss Pre-NGE, but given the current state of the game it's ok, I would like to find something new, but as far as the MMO market goes there are no other games that interest me long enough, i seem to go right back to SWG.
So i say do the 21-day vet trial, you get to use your old account, and will be able to see more of the game, as the 14 day free trial starts you off as a lvl 1 beginer, you don't get to see the full aspect of the game.
But on a side note, if you respec your weaponsmith to a combat class you'll start off as lvl in the class you pick.
I read on a post somewhere that they're bringing decay back. Let's see if that happens. At any rate, I was thinking about giving SWG another shot, since right now there's no other MMO I can think of that gives me that same "Feeling" I had in this game. Only problem is I was originally in Kauri, and that server's pretty much Dead right now. I created a new character on Bloodfin, which has about 10X as many players but I'm wondering, for the Eastern Time Zone in the U.S., is that the busiest server? Is there a way to find out? Also, I heard that they now let you transfer to another server, is there a fee to that?
As far as i hear, Bria and Bloddfin are the top 2 servers, Bria gets a bad rep from having an unforgiving Vet community, but a lot of that is gone these days.
Decay was proclaimed to be coming back in some shape or form a few months after the NGE had reared it's head, but no effort had been made to actually implement it, if it does come back, look for it to be ala WoW, where you can just go to a NPC and have your armor repaired, even if it is broken. Thogugh with the Trader re-vamp, and the reverse engineering of stated loot armor, it's unsure on this.
When looted armor and weps was brought in as a major way of getting items, it seemed munitions tarder was doomed, but with the revamp, i see a few more, since crafted armor still protects better, just never had the added stat bonus, now there's both.
In my opinion every former player should give the 14 days a try and then decide if the game is for them or not.
I have to say that so far I'm really enjoying the improvments they made, the game is very fun to play, has lots more content than it used to have and the servers are not dead like somepeople here like to think.
The game is cathing up and I'm enjoying the ride , but not everyone will like it, there are different tastes and different opinions and there always will be, Mine is in favor of the game, but you will find lots of people than are against, its normal and the best way is see for yourself and take your own decision
I would give it another try if I were you, as the game has improved a lot since NGE launched. Perhaps you may want to respec your armoursmith to some other profession, but first give the new RE crafting system a try with it.

Muahahaha 22 months later I gave it a 40 day paid trial. I found it Guilty of Fraud and Negligence.
Guys, seriously... don't go back... all it is is a WoW version of its former self, just trust me on this... we should all stand strong and ask for pre-cu servers in my opinion.

To the OP, if you are going back to craft you'll be disappointed depending on your philosophy of crafting.....Have a business or just make things for the fun of it. You are not going to make stuff that is better than loot drops. If someone asks you to make something, by chance, they won't be back for more because no decay. If you want to go back and be a fighter/healer type class, you might enjoy. Crafting, however, is not practical but, rather, a source of self amusement.

Eh i gave em a month to try and win me back ..So far its meh but beast mastery is ok, its something new i suppose..It needs alot more precu to it but as with the last publishes ive tried it still doesnt have a hold factor it once did..Reguardless of things the current players claim its still pretty vaccant..I highly doubt this publish will keep many vets just because the combat is still pretty bad..But pve is still pretty much the same..How can i call out the BS if i havent tried to see what so many claim? I cant so i am giving it a try to see if its improved or merely another bandaid..
I do find it funny as much as the current players love it the New beast mastery has alot of Precu elements to it..Its actually the first complex thing added since the fun factor removal of 05..Its easy to bash SWG when you havent played in ages cause it changes each publish. What SOE is good at changing the game regularly, at least it keeps you on your toes..You never know what it will be when you log in next lol...

For folks who never experienced the old SWG, it might be fine. Another in a same o', same o' line of clones. For those of us who DID experience the old SWG, there's no way back.
If you don't really care where you spend your sub money, and really want something with the SW logo on it, fine. Enjoy. You'll never know what a great MMO it used to be, but you might have fun since you won't see the garbage it's become overlaid on our beloved landscape.
As for losing only 20% of its population...well, you just need to go to Spamonet or Greed to see the real numbers. They got those nicknames for a REASON. On EVERY server, too, not just a couple. The NGE produced the biggest exodus ever seen in a game, and never even immagined in SOE's most hideous nightmares, I'm sure. To the point where SOE's now only buying titles instead of inventing them. I think the SWG debacle hurt them more than even we can imagine. And that's a good thing.
To the NGE, however, just say "no". There's really no point anymore. Try a newer game. They may not be different, but at least they were designed not to be different from the start.

Since we are looking at the chart noticed what Happen to EQ1 550k to 200K - WoW , I wonder what happened - muahahahaha - Love that Jestor!
No official subscription numbers have been released since the CU, that site is just speculation. Once again please use solid facts.
The official count was %20 left by Julio Torres. Countless others have joined and 'veterans' have returned,
There was no "count" since SOE doesn't release their subscription numbers for SWG, and hasn't for some time. Since the numbers aren't released, there is little reason to trust what Torres said. (especially since when the NGE came out, he boasted about how people were loving the NGE, and only a minority left. )
Me, I don't know how many people left. It's not the 30k still playing "Anti-$OE" people will claim, and the idea that the game is above 150k is quite honestly laughable, given the fact that outside of PvP gankfests, you can go sometime without running into anyone.
