Why do you pay to play? (research purpose)

Hi everyone

I have just started to write articles for games for a major website. I want to write an article about why do people pay to play the MMORPG. What drives you? Why do you love playing even when you are paying for it? Is paying for the game monthly a huge turn off? How much would you pay (max) to play? Any info you can think of is good.  Other questions like, would you pay to play if the paying game offered a little bit more than the free ones.

Which game(s) are you paying to play at the moment?  These are just some questions I can think of at the top of my head right now but feel free to answer my original question as detailed as possible.  If anyone makes a very good point I will quote them, so if you do not want me to quote you please say so in your reply.  Thank you for your time.

I will also post this at other popular forums as well to get a better sample population

its cheaper for the amount of content you get

somepeople buy the latest ingleplayer game for say £50 then complete in a couple of days, then buy another and the cost of the game goes down alot.

paying to play saves you alot of money, if you play alot, since you can stick to that single game.

Are you being paid for your writings?

And if so, do we get some type of payment for our effort in answering you?

Do you pay to go to the movies?

Do you pay to go on a fancy dinner?

Do you pay your gym membership?

Do you pay to go to an amusment park such as Disneyland or Marine World?

Do you pay to watch cable?

That sums up why I pay to play. To get quality, you have to pay. The other thing is...$15 a month cost less then renting a months worth of movies/game rentals.

your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

I am not paid to write articles, I am a webmaster(paid) for the site but I volunteered to write stuff because I think I have enough experience in games to write some decent articles

I have tried google but I would like to write my own article instead of looking up other people's artciles and summing them up.  I want your inputs because it is up to date and i think it is more real, at least to me it is.  I am not dissing anyone for paying to play i am simply asking why you paid to play. I paid to play awhile back as well, and it was because I wanted to try the game.

Well, obviously theres the extortion factor as I like to call it =p. If you want to play the game, then you don't really have a choice. I've never understood the people who complain "omg you're paying monthly to pay that! I refuse to pay for a game after I bought it blah blah blah." Maybe because I have a fair understanding of how the industry works and know that the money being payed in actually goes to the upkeep of the game and people who support it. Bandwidth and staff aren't free. As long as prices stay below $18 a month, I don't see any issues with it. I was a bit irked when prices jumped initially from $9.99 to $12.99 because the way it was done seemed like it was unessisary and an attempt to just grab for more money. The current pricing for most MMOs are at a fair level for the most part with regards to content and service received. I think a balance needs to be kept between service and fees though. It doesn't matter if you're offering the most awesome service imaginable if it entails a mandatory monthly fee thats too large. I think Sony learned that when they tried to test out giving "exceptional" service to people on their legends servers for $40 a month. It doesn't matter how "exceptional" it is, nobody wants to fork out that much a month for a game. I think it would be best to keep fees as they are, and put any additional content or services as optional fees that can be added to your account somewhat like the EQplayers system. Once again, the question is if corporations will be responsible with it or start charging micropayment like fees for features that would normally be in the game anyway.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Very simple answer- Pay MMORPGs offer something the player wants (usually an online RPG) they can't get elsewhere, plus an instant community, unique exploration and an experience such as a 5-40 player dungeon not accessible in the usual solo/multiplayer game. Granted 40 player dungeon crawls are not my cup of tea, but that is what all the hard core players are doing in something like WoW.

    Past MMOs- Planetside, WoW.
    Current MMO:
    Current Games: L4D, Skyrim
    Tried- ATITD, EQ2, SoR, Vanguard,SL,LOTRO,SotNW,SWTOR.

I've come to accept that the mmorpg standard now is pay monthly to play.  If I dont pay I get the feeling that the game is not being maintained as much which leaves room for disappointment.  Then again i know of free mmorpgs that are great.

To me long term quality equals money.  When it comes down to it's " no pay no work".  Then again money corrupts.  In the end its just the standard and if the game catches my eye and I have to pay monthly then thats that :P.

Never ever paid £50 for a game, even for the xbox360... whoa... i know that the RRP is, but i have never seen them sold at that price ;)

Maybe £40, but after 3 weeks, you still get around £20-25 trade in.

Plus it's guranteed to work on the console without extra downloading, checking drivers, any upgrades etc and play to the manufacteres specifications ;) even better on a HDTV.

Yep i also pay for a couple of MMOs, mostly in windowed mode and play them while i chat. Getting decent time with my 360 is getting harder until more decent games come out. Hurry up Overlord, yep i prefer the 360 over the PC version, i like my controller in some types of games.

Would i want an MMO on the 360, well before EA took them over, Mythic did have a working demo of it playing really nicely on the 360 at E3, but when EA bought them over in June-July of that year. Any mention of it disappeared and looks certain to have died.

Weird though, you'd have thought EA would be wanting a piece of the pie.

I pay monthly subscription fees because the caliber of content, updates, and service of pay-to-play games totally eclipses that of no-fee MMORPGs. I'd rather pay a monthly fee then contend with in-game advertising and as an adult, dropping $15 a month for a few hours of enjoyment each week really is not asking a lot.

  • JebzillaJebzilla Member Posts: 2

It's like a magazine subscription.  You pay to read the material and enjoy it.  I approach the fees for a MMORPG the same way.  I'm paying for the entertainment value.  The monthly cost is around a non-matinee movie ticket with some popcorn or soda (not both that's just way to much).  It's just a cheap and fun hobby.  Right now I'm playing DAoC and I'm waiting on WAR.

I am an old school D&D and Champions RPG player. I love RPGs. I played 'em in high school, and then in the summers on college breaks, with my oldest and dearest friends. After college those friends all moved away, and so did I, and nobody in my vicinity (at least nobody that I know personally) is into RPGs. I have no way to play them locally, therefore. However, online RPGs provide me and some of those very old, dear friends, a very real way to get back together just like in the old days, and play an online version of those RPGs we loved. It's not about the particular MMO for us, but rather, about being able to "game with friends" as we did in the old days when we were young and lived nearby. It lets us stay close, even when we are far apart.

Is paying for the game monthly a huge turn off?
Not if it's a good game. Not if my friends are all playing it. Not if I am having a lot of fun. When those things cease (such as, if my friends get bored and cancel or even just stop logging in), then I stop subscribing.

How much would you pay (max) to play? Any info you can think of is good.
I think $15/month is approaching max unless single player game boxes get more expensive. Those have hovered in the $50-60 range for as long as I can remember. If we start talking about paying 1/2 or more per month of what you would pay for a whole entire game, I start thinking it's not worth it.

Would you pay to play if the paying game offered a little bit more than the free ones?
Pay games generally do offer more. That's not really the issue for me. The issues are:
    1. Are my other friends into it?
    2. Is it a good game?
    3. Are we all having fun?
If the answers to those questions are 'yes', 'yes', 'yes', then we're in a good place. If not, it's time to look elsewhere.

Which game(s) are you paying to play at the moment?

No MMORPGs. I've been fooling around with some single player games, most recently The Movies, which is a lot of fun. Why no MMOs? My friends and I can't agree on one we all want to play just now. One guy is in WOW, but the other guy and I are not... And we aren't interested in WOW, and the guy playing it is still into it. So we figure when he gets tired of that we will all try something else.

The only other thing I can think of is that I don't mind paying $200 up front for a lifetime subscription. If more games modeled this I would probably have more MMOs.

As a family man, I find great advantages to MMOs.  It saves me a great amount of time and money per month.

$14.99/month is much better than $100-$200/month on console games.  And, because of the wife and little one, it is not exactly easy or cheap to go to the movies:  $20 for the movie.  $10 Popcorn, Soda, $30 dinner, $20 babysitter.  Total amount spent for one date with the wife = $80.

It is definitely worth the $14.99 for me.  Other hobbies like model railroads, cars, robot building, etc, can be fun, but much more expensive.  Maybe in my next life, or if I hit the lotto, but realistically, I can't afford more expensive hobbies.

"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"

I used to buy bout 1to 2 games a month.Mmorpg's provide me with more fun....a better gaming experience and is overall cheaper then how i used to play. Now i haven't played a single player gamesince i played DAOC when it was released. The experience is just not comparable to a regular singleplayer.I only play P2P because the F2P never are to my liking.

    Hi there!

I pay to play because the content is worth the money!  Playing MMO's is one of my big hobbies, and the cost is actually cheaper than a lot of other hobbies that my friends and family have.  I also love the social and community aspects of MMO's.  I'm willing to pay because I end up meeting and making friends that I stay in touch with.

Just recently, actually, a found a great group of people in City of Heroes/Villains and The Matrix Online.  I do not plan on leaving, as I am having more fun with them than I ever have in any MMO.

I also love the satisfaction that you get from MMO's.  There's nothing like getting that new piece of gear, or hitting max level.

Unlike most of the trolls on these forums, most MMO players enjoy playing MMO's.

The $200 for a lifetime subscription really isn't a terribly good deal unless you're one of those who can stick with one game for a long period of time. To make it worth it, you really need to stick with the game for at least a year and a half.

Too many variable costs to factor in a lifetime sub (including YOUR life variables for it lol), plus it doesn't exactly give developers motivation to create new and interesting content, if the majority of the player base are lifetimers anyway.

In Britain obviously you'd pay around £100 (around $200) but with our prices probably around £120-140, then of course broadband/DSL/Cable, so thats around a basic £14.99 a month.

Whereas some people will play a MMO max around 6 months before they hit the end game, done everything, and get slightly bored and want to try something else. Most MMOs like LOTRO had a price for the 6months for pre-order people for £5.99. (the normal price is of course £8.99 for us, around $18, the VAT is the killer)

    now £5.99 times 6, is £35.94.

    A saving of £84.06-£104.06.

Now if more games could do a 6 months pricing scheme like that. i'd be happy.
