if i'm understanding you right you shouldn't have too many problems playing one of the current games on a vista system, i haven't read too many posts about games not working. this IS assuming you're using 32bit vista. if you're using 64 bit vista i'd also have to assume that MOST games would work just fine, with a slightly less chance. and then there's the dual boot option, which is the route that i'm going to take just to make sure that if a game i want to play is NOT 65bit vista compatible i can always boot up xp and play away.
**edit.. i see you're using home basic, so scratch the 64 bit stuff i think that only comes in the 32 bit flavor. but you can still dual boot

Yup 32 Bit. Vista Premium and Vista Ultimate I guess have the 64 Bit.
My Specs, (If you could actually see a game for me).
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.7GHz Processor (ea. Core). Windows Vista Home Basic (16 & 32 Bit). 446 MB RAM Memory. DirectX 10. X2 ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M Series Graphics Card.

My Rig.: Toshiba Satellite A135 not sure what you're looking for in a game. see what type of game interests you first then check the publisher's page for the hardware requirements. this will narrow down your search to some degree. off the cuff i think warcraft can be played with those specs. the 446 mb of ram and running vista make it hard to tell what's actually going to be playable.
You might want to consider upgrading your RAM if you have the cash. RAM is crazy cheap right now, you could get another 1GB for around $30-$40, and that will increase your game performance by a lot.
Like the poster above me said, you should be able to play most games on Vista 32-bit.
I won't make any pc upgrade. (I'm still short in cash for now). O.K., I decided LineAge II And WoW. I don't know if this games have free trials, but i'll check them out. for a free game, I was thinking of silkroad online, flyff gives me game guard errors.

My husband just bought a new gaming laptop and found Vista too much of a pain for some of the games he wanted to play so he picked up a copy of XP. I thought it was funny. He has to work on a computer, he doesn't feel like fussing with one when he wants to play.
hmm...the only games i've ever really had problems with are the ones that have outdated versions of GameGuard (eg Phantasy Star Online, not PSU...PSO (Blue Burst)...and the Dungeon Runners Limited Release version gave me problems). Even MapleStory works...i've also had to run some games in compatibility modes (UO (either client) and EQ1) but for the most part, all games work one way or another but here's a list of MMOs that have been tested by me and work one way or another:
World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
EverQuest 1
Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn
Ultima Online (2D client)
Anarchy Online
RF Online
Star Wars Galaxies
Meridian 59
The Realm Online
MapleStory
Sword of the New World
Lord of the Rings Online (wow, that's a no-brainer :P)
Scions of Fate
Infantry Online
Dungeon Runners (had some problems with this one at first but the public release works )
Arindal
Clan Lord
Phylon
Project Winter Online
The Mana World
Lineage 1
Lineage 2
Knight Online
Rakion
FlyFF (works, but there's a Vista glitch where the screen shakes like hell)
Space Cowboy Online
Forgotten World
Age of Armor
City of Heroes/Villains
Voyage Century
meh, can't think of any more...if i do, i'll tell ya...anyways, NEVER install OpinionSquare (don't ask)...i don't care if you work from home right now or not...it blocks some of the ports that the MMOs use...and screwed up Phylon and AO on my comp for some time because i couldn't update for a while
EDIT: looking back at this post...the other thing is i have a 2.4 GHz dual processor and 2.1 GB of RAM so...i really dunno how it'll go on your comp but, i helped any way i could
EDIT2: we need to make an ever growing list like this and sticky it for future newbs
as long as you have the right hardware Vista will play 99.99% of games flawlessy without any configuring. under 1 gig or ram is definately a case on not having enough ram. I wish pc vendors would stop selling underpowered computers with Vista on them.
I won't make any pc upgrade. (I'm still short in cash for now). O.K., I decided LineAge II And WoW. Running two GPU's in SLI is generally more costy than one better GPU, and not always supported by games. If a game isn't coded to use a dual GPU set up, it will run as if you only have one. That said, I have no idea about laptops. I don't even know if you CAN run a SLI set up on them.
WoW has a free trial right now. I believe you just have to go to worldofwarcraft.com and create an account and it gives you a 10 day trial. Like I said before, you should seriously consider a RAM upgrade. That, or if you have XP, install that. Running XP, WoW should be playable for you, although it'll be choppy as hell in cities.
Originally posted by mcharj11 Originally posted by MuffinManXIV Jesus christ, are you honestly attempting to play games on vista with less than a gig of ram?
Vista basic doesn't use the Aero graphics though so it doesn't need the same amount of RAM as premium or ultimate.
Your post made me curious so I just ran a quick-and-dirty test.
If I close everything that's not needed, including Firefox, disabling the "Vista Ultimate" GUI, close the side bar and disable my anti-virus, Vista will still consume about 417 MBs of RAM to sit around and do nothing.
Unfortunately, this poster's computer simply doesn't have enough RAM to run games on Vista. They will probably have a frustrating experience just trying to run applications on their computer.
not anymore check the site...there's also arindal, which is based off of Clan Lord and is in beta right now (payment is not decided, if there will be any) but because of CL, it can't be in English (mutual agreement)
anyways, all of those listed have worked for me...i can't remember some though...and others i haven't tried...we really need to sticky a list for games that do/don't work on vista...cuz i've had major problems with Black and White 2 (major lag, and my comp exceeds recommended reqs) and Command and Conquer Generals (won't load up)
Aha. It does have a little link on the Clan Lord site for Windows, now. I remember years and years ago, my husband (who uses Macs for work) parked a character in the Library in that game. I wonder if it's still there?

haha, ok...it's not a bad game and worth a shot but, i seriously think people get biased about games because of graphics in today's day and age...hmm...well, Dark Ages was a success and doesn't quite have as much detail as CL and it's still a success...oh well...i still play Arindal (basically an international CL clone...with a little bit better mapping ) regardless of whether or not it's popular

I'm curious why you won't be making any PC upgrades and yet you are running Windows Vista? Unless you got a free copy of Vista somehow you would have been far better off to upgrade your PC with more memory like was suggested rather than install Vista.
My Desktop: Microsoft Windows XP SP2. Intel Pentium IV 2.66GHz Processor. 246MB RAM Memory. Intel Extreme 2 Graphics Controller. 96MB Video RAM. HDD1 - 20GB Memory. HDD2 - 20GB Memory. DirectX 9.0c.
-I was able to run Rappelz, SoR, WoW, ExTeel, RFO. <-HD MMOs. -Surely I got the lags, DC, and small glitches, but it was smooth.
My LapTop/NoteBook: Genuine Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic. Genuine Intel Dual Core T2080 1.73GHzp/core Processor. 446MB RAM Memory. 2pcs. ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M Series Graphics Card. 127/128MB Video RAM. HDD - 75GB Memory. DirectX 10.
-No games yet to run.
And lastly, A very UnStable (It switches speed from 300 to 500 and above. It is so crazy, but I find it Fast) BroadBand Internet connection of 386KBp/s - 512KBp/s. ----- I would not like to argue with you guys,
Vista sucks up a lot more power and ram than XP. So any game you play on Vista will not perform as well. Vista draws more power from the graphics card and can take up some serious ram. This is why I think people are starting to think about wanting 3 or 4 gig of ram in the computer and a nice card.

2 GB's for XP and 4 GB's for Vista 32 bit, that's all the RAM needed. Yes, Vista relies on GPU. However THIS IS A GOOD THING! Instead of having your OS graphics powered by your CPU, resulting in much needed CPU power being tied down to the OS instead of the gaming, you can let your video card handle ALL graphics and let the CPU do it's job properly! A single 8800 GTX can keep a vista OS happy as well as any game you can throw at it! Published benchmarks are already starting to show this...

Sure you can get Linux to look really pretty and do some cool stuff with Beryl. I doubt it will go anywhere though, especially for gamers. I can only think of a few (good) games that would natively run on Linux. Unreal Tournament 2k4, Quake 4, and Doom 3... I am sure there are a few more good ones but it seriously lacks when you compare it to Windows, or even Macs once ID and EA start doin some work and moving them to that platform.
