so many ppl answers NWN but... it's not really single player is it? or will they say that all the time they played was the single player campaign... i kind of doubt that...
Anyway, the game that made me loose way too much time despite being bug ridden was Daggerfall and probably Civ2

NWN is more of an offline game then an online game. You can download player made campaigns, models, textures, sounds etc that you can use in your own singleplayer module (story) or someone else's.
For all time, I've gotta go with XCom: UFO Defense. Hell, I can still play that game. Predating even that, don't know if anyone remembers Empire. Explore the map, conquer cities, set production and patrols, then move on.
Ultima 7 probably comes up next as well as the old XWing and TieFighter.
Close runners-up would be Shogun and Medieval with Rome Total Wars coming out on top. Got a lot of play from the Diablos.
Sorry.... hard to pick just one... haven't logged the hours
Not sure how to answer that one. Was thinking The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Then I thought well not really because I think I spent more time in Daggerfall itself than any of the Elder Scroll sequels.
Got a copy of Icewid Dale and it's Hearts of Winter expansion I have put a heafty amount of time into too. Still playing with it as a matter of fact. Just yesterday my son and I rolled up a new set of characters . Sometimes he gives me a real challenge to get ahead with his choices but it is fun to try. Last year he gave me a set of 4 thieves one warrior and one healer to try to make it through. That was a challenge!
Baldur's Gate series easily. I've been playing it since 1998. The two games have so much to do and so many race/class combinations/romances/items/NPCs that you can play through it many times.
I put 40 hours into FF7 and then played it again for another good 40 hours a couple years later. I think that would be A. The longest game ever, and B. The funnest. I tried to play it again a month ago and couldnt the graphics on it are so terrible now.
Never take life too seriously youre never gonna make it out alive.
the golden chocobo annoyed me, i was so close at one point but missed out one of the choco's completely and got another one from a different continent... screwed up my whole process (which was random anyway).
oh how many times did i restart my saved game just to have fate mock me.
This would probably have to be Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind for me. I 1st played it on the xbox of all things and played it for about 18 months straight. Completing it ALL.
I then went ahead and got the computer version of it, and the expansions and loaded it back up on the computer and then started playing it again. I did all the main missions of each one and tons of side quests. I guess that's been about 4 years ago now total I spent on it occasionally. I still have it installed but its not played very regularly by me anymore. I did have a lot of fun using the world creation editor as well and playing around with it as a mod.
As far as SPG's go, that one is probably it for me. Although there's many I spent over a year on my computer with, this one got the most play time.
I'd have to say Oblivion. I finished the game several times through, then got the 2 expansions and did it a few more times.
In my current incarnation I'm a Breton with 100% Magic resist (Mundane ring), 65% spell reflect (spell breaker and aforementioned ring)and 100% +damage reflect (Amulet of Axes, Ring of the Iron Fist and Raiment of the Crimson scar) so I can now only die if I fall from high places, walk in lava or drown (though I have walk on water and water breathing spells). I'm also the God of Madness, Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, Archmage of the Mages guild, Grey Fox , Master of the Fighters guild and Champion of Cryodil. Been blessed by gods (and daedric princess and princesses) and have the NotN armour which I can't wear because I'm a compulsive theif and murderer. My basement is also littered with transcendant sigil stones. I tell you, those things are noisey en mass.
If we're talking computer games probably Neverwinter Nights, Warcraft III or CivIII not sure which it would be. If we're talking console games it would definately be Final Fantasy Tactics.

NWN2 was a major disapointment, i still have the box but it has a layer of dust on it
