...don't get me wrong, I'm just making a view not stating fact but I feel like I can't be a two axe carrying 'zerker because I'm told by other players that I have to be one handed and shield. I can't be staff Bruiser because I'm told that I'm gimped unless I go unarmed in the beginning. I could just be being badly informed of course, or just getting it wrong myself but this is how I feel with EQ2 sometimes and why I don't feel I can stick with a class much past level 10.
Do what you want with one exception. If you are a plate fighter and tank in a group then use a damn shield please. Not using a shield as tank is having fun while your healer is working off his butt for your fun. On everything else you really should do what you like. Challaniging places are again another story, but i wont go into those details yet.
I play many tank classes so i get to here all the scuitany of other classes in my group.
My monk at one point was told to use a two hander for tanking, a bo, since supposedly at an early point in the game i recieved less reposte from mobs with less frequent hits. I still used duel wield and found i could hold aggro better with them .................. and surprise surprise the healer could still heal me np.
My sk gets infromed alot i should be using a shield when tanking so i can get the aggro off cash. I still use my two hand axe and can count the times i lost aggro on one hand all the way to 63 thus far.
The min maxers as they are called are actually very narrow minded ............ they go off numbers and dont consider other factors like skill or simple things like other ways to approach a problem. These are the people you see ask what is the best dps class, or tank, healer ect. If i would of listened to these people when i made my monk i would of never got her to 70.
Now not to say the min maxers dont have thier numbers right or are useless .................. just go with what you want to do ................. you might shock and impress them by showing them a diff and better way to do things.
I've played with a max level/AA zerker as a Main Tank on many occasions who would be in offensive stance and either dual wielding or using a 2-H'er while in the higher-end heroic zones.
Play the style you want and let the groups work around your abilities. Only the min/maxers and raid MTs care. Nothing stopping you from having alternate gear for special occassions too.

This happens in every MMO game. As others have stated do what you like because you won't escape this way of thinking that effects min/max'ers in every MMO. Also understand that you won't be getting a MT spot in most raiding guilds though because that is the nature of the best known as raiding which demands min/maxing.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
