I would make a female character just to get the special treatment that geeky teenage boys give to female characters. Someone gave my wife 50,000 gil and two rings in FFXI just because she was a girl.
I tried that once in World of Warcraft, but I had some guy hitting on me before I left the starting area. It was so sad, I couldn't even bring myself to tell him I was a guy. I just logged out and went back to playing my hairy, bearded male dwarf. I don't think I've made a female character since then. I don't want to know how desperate these guys can be.
heres what i think. men who play as girls probably dont get much irl or they are gay. some actually think its pretty funny to mess with other guys like that. to those people all i have to say is you have alot of free time on your hands or not many friends irl. heres why i play as a guy most of the time. i dont like women fighting. men need to be men and do the fighting not the women, they can use magic and stuff but leave the fighting to the men. its just my opinion.
You're joking, right?
I don't think he is!
PS I rarely get hit on in MMOs anymore. Us women are a dime a dozen these days. And quite a lot of us aren't boys! When it does happen and the person doesn't bugger off when I tell them to, I just ignore them.

I guess some people still have that kind of 1900s mentality.
Anyway, I usually have least one male character that I play in MMOs, female IRL. Personally I enjoy playing characters wildly different then I am, I usually pick beast races and sometimes play males because I like the look of them better and the females sometimes too frail looking for my tastes.
On non-RP server it makes no difference if you are playing male or female char. But on RP server... I once made female NE char in WoW... Every male char flirted with me, they gave me all kinds of stuff and wanted to help me with any kind of quest - and I was uber rude to them! F* horney prickes... By the lvl 20 I deleted the char, I learned my lesson. It's just too wired for me to RP female char and all the males flirting with me had bad effect on my manhood.
Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...
I am a boy. I play a boy character. I don't like the idea of being thought as a girl by a bunch of horny 12 - 50 year old players. I don't want free loot because my character has pixel tatties. I don't want to be called babe, girl, or toots. I am a boy, and I also don't want to be called hun by someone playing a female character who is actually some dude is Ohio. The thought of either of these situation makes my skin crawl.
Sure, it is a video game, but you are thought of by the gender of your character by a lot of players and their attitudes are changed via what one you play.
I'm a guy and personally, i have a mix of characters in both genders. For me it's not "something nice and sexy to look at while I'm playing" so much as, I don't think male rogues look right (WoW), all big and muscle-y, when they're supposed to be stealthy and fast, or little female warriors that are supposed to hit really hard and take the hard hits. I don't play on any RP servers but little things like that are just for my playing enjoyment, i made my rogue a human female because they look smaller and more lithe than the massive males and my warrior is a night elf male because he's bloody massive and looks tough!
personally I find it wierd that anyone would play a char that wasn't the same sex as them in real life, I know there are the arguments like: 'who wants to watch a guys ass when you are a guy' etc. but these are games and I have no more desire to watch a female char run about than a male one. I would, however like to portray as much of me as possible in my char so I stick with male chars. I have no problem with guys playing female roles, its just not for me.
You’re almost there, now just go a little bit further. Why are you assuming people should want to make a character that represents themselves? I already have such a character in real life why do I need one in a game? I want characters that I find interesting and one of the things I happen to find interesting is the opposite sex. Others specifically want to role play a character that is different from themselves, and so on.
As soon as you divorce yourself from the idea that people must want the character to represent their real self then you will understand why there need be no connection between a players real sex and their characters sex. This is equally true for any other aspect of your character btw…
I am not assuming that people want to make a character that represents themselves, I am merely stating that I do. I have no problem with how people want to portray themselves in a game, its just for me, I am happy with me and so in all walks of life I try just to be me.
I agree with seth (haha) but seriously when I was looking at armor becuase I was bored especially for rogues, their gear just looks better on skinnier models (undead or just a female class , besides fat dwarves) but he's got a good point thats just a problem with the game company like blizzard =D if they gave wow the customizabilty of everquest they would draw alot more people in
ps. I STILL LIKE WOW > EQ2, THOUGH eq2 did seem very interesting when i was making my charachter then when i made it i noticed the game play sucked (wasnt my style ... get your flamethrowers ready ) but yeah wow needs more definative features
actually i've never encountered that I honestly beleive games should have a male/female thing on the account activation form that make you have to make a male or female whichever one you originally chose becuase dealing with gender confusion is quite aggrivating and people abuse it too
I know a 100% cure for that. Get a girlfriend, and then you won't be so interested in hitting on hawt elf chicks that turn out to be guys.

Girls playing guys and Guys Playing Girls, if thats how someone enjoys a game whos to say that it wrong, does it matter that much?
If it does to you, perhaps you need to say, wait a min why do worry so much about other peoples lives?
Ever try to rp with an Atrox in ANARCHY Online. It gets really confusing then.
Usually i just flirt with engie or crat pets.

Just stay away from the leets and you'll be fine.
