I've read the first 3+ pages of this thread and what I see is insecurity. Why would someone defend one sport over another. When you demean a sport (especially when you don't understand it), you are going to offend others. I have not been derogatory to soccer even though I never saw my first match until my mid 30's when the USA lost to Iran. Although I understand the game a lot more now the USA men's team is still rarely on television. Actually they can be seen more on Spanish speaking channels. I don't follow soccer like many of you do so it would be unfair to say it is a great sport or not. Actually I think those that would criticize another sport without knowing much about it is unfair.
For those who have never seen the movie Brian's Song I would really recommend it. It's a true story about 2 American football players in the mid to late 60's. What makes it special is that they were the first black/white roommates in football (1965) for the Chicago Bears and how they became friends. It is one of the best sports movies of all time and a real tear jerker (I defintely cried, couldn't help it). BTW Gale Sayers is one of the best running backs of all time. Brian's Song is a 1971 movie starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. It will make you cry (especially since it's a true story). It also helps you understand a little bit about American football.
For those that say NFL players aren't as fast as soccer players, know that Herschel Walker not only was an All-American football player and NFL star (86-97), but also an All-American in track. Hershel Walker was named one of the top 5 nationally in the 60 yard dash. Those that say that American football players are not as fast as those in soccer have no idea. Walker was also part of the 92 USA bobsled team that finished 7th.
And yes, I would take the fastest football runner over the fastest soccer runner. (Not saying which is a better sport, mind you) There are moments in football where sometimes pure fleetness of foot is ALL that counts, and being able to sprint your ass off faster than the guy pursuing you (or faster than the guy you're chasing) while wearing bulky cumbersome armor is what wins the game. Soccer players need to run and control the ball. So yes, I think that often pure footspeed is more important than football than in soccer.

But no football is tougher(difficulty wise, not physically), pure sprinting with a ball in hand, or chasing a person, compared to a soccer player in full sprint chasing a ball, getting control of the ball, and making a decision with a defender on his back. On the other end, you could of been given a through ball, so you would get control, while perhaps still going full speed dribbling and attacking, or slowing it up and creating something.
Pure foot speed? I'm sure some of that muscle is going to slow him down, compared to a soccer player.

Not all football players are made of muscle, and in fact I think the sprinters really arent. Control+speed and pure speed are two different things. so ya, I agree with him that probably the VERY FASTEST football player would outrun the VERY FASTEST soccer player but ya know there are middle grounds in both sports so shrug
