    To complex combat system??

    WTF??

There are many MMOs with a very simple combat system that have been around for years. I dont like em.

Finally when we are to have a "complex" combat system......some begin to complain???

AoC is the beginning of how a MMO combat system should be

And if someone dont like it..go and play those damn point and click instead

i totally agree, its time for point and click to move over i say. its obviously going to seem a bit confusing at first. Also i must say that i have bought games on pcgamers recomendations that have been sh*t and also avoided games they have slatted that my friends have played that have been good.

I've waited so long for this game and its new combat system that i wouldnt care who slatted it, we are all well overdue for a fresh change.

Well then you'll be glad to read this.

2.11 Will you be able to queue attacks?

Yes, you will be able to queue attacks, but only a few. When you make a strike, the game will put this into queue and perform it when your current strike is complete. So you can line up strikes, or attacks, if that is what you want. Or you can fight dynamically and perform strikes as they are completed. There will not be a macro system for the real-time combat.

    Hope that helps. :)

I was saying in a earlier post macros from hacker programs. Everquest has macroquest so somthing along the lines to that the hackers will create for this game was wat i was saying regarding macros.

Yea but 3rd party Macros can to some extend be discovered by the devs, both by the simpel, discover the program on the web, sue the macro program makers for braking their codes, and by monitoring the players, if a player performes the same actions agian and agian, at the same area, it is grounds for further investigation, and if they are directly monitored it would be easy to discover if they are using macros.

Please do read a bit about the game. That's the melee combat system that's been descriped. It also have manually aiming arrows and spells, "homing spell", spells that do AoE in a triangle ahead of you, and an all-new spellweaving weaving system, where you can combine spells for deadly results for either you or the enemy.

AoC is going to be more hectic and complex than other MMOs.

One thing is for sure. This game willnot be for everyone. Most people that love to run macros to fight and eat pizza at the sam time while talking on the phone are not going to neccesarily like that they cant do that., thus you might get some negative reactions. This is something new. And it very different from what most are used to. So honestly if you already think that the fighting will be complex, and hectic, then its probably not for you.

    I have a Question:

Apart from the Combos you can do and the 6 melee attack Buttons...

Is there a Skill-Bar existant nevertheless? With skills like Slows, Snares, Stuns, disorients, interrupts?

Same with the Manual Aiming of Arrows, will special arrow-skills be there? Like Net-Arrows, Burning Arrows, I dunno how magical the world actually is, but if an archer can weave soem magic as well, frost arrows, Poisoned Arrows, maybe Traps and the like?

Because if AoC lacks a skill bar...sorry, but most MMORPGs have more than 6 Options at a time (maybe 7 if blocking is another option)

with aiming there will by arrow combos, where the last arrow or sumth like that has a designated efect like a snare or dot, and there is a caster bar that casters have to pay attention to to prevent soul weaving, and there are other abilities for melee, like dark templar has a life tap, and health transer abilities, conquorer has group buffs, etc, a lot of the information can be found on the AoC website and in the videos

Yeah, if you want to play by pushing only one or two macroed buttons, may as well play WoW, EQ2, or other macro games

The film has got nothing really to do with the game, when are the press going to realise this? Its the I.P of the Lore and not the Film they are working with.

    Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

    Format
    PC

    Funcom

    Genre
    Action, Role Playing

3-Jul-2007 Played: The MMO that breaks the rules

Funcom is taking a warhammer and bludgeoning MMO conventions by fusing elements usually reserved for the single-player world with traditional, developed features in the genre.

Primarily this fusion is occurring through the game's real-time dynamic combat system, but the developer is also drawing on its experience with adventure titles such as Dreamfall to flesh out and add colour to NPC interaction and quests. It's including a dynamic AI system for NPCs that it likens to Oblivion's Radiant artificial intelligence.

And then there's the fact that you'll spend a good portion of your way to level 20 playing on your own (and the developer assures us that players will be able to play solo to the level cap of 80, but that's by the by). But it's a combat system generally unheard of in the MMO genre that's grabbed the headlines.

    WELCOME TO OUR WORLD

Age of Conan's world is dark with a mature flavour, which is reflected in the art direction. This is gritty, brutal Conan. It's certainly an eye-catcher; one moment causing eyebrows to raise at the quality of a sprawling city while at other times it's the huge open vistas that run into gorgeous mountains capped in snow that form a lump in our throats.

The world of Hyboria players will be presented with is broken down into zones, so no seamless game world. Part of the reason for this is to allow Funcom to achieve the level of detail in the environments you'll have seen in the screenshots and movies, while the developer also wanted to use areas from all over Hyboria without having to truncate the game world.

"Walking from Cimmeria to Stygia should take weeks if not months. So we're using bits and pieces of the world, and instead of seamless travel between these areas, you rather fast travel", Funcom product manager Erling Ellingsen tells us.

Hyborian adventures commence on Tortage, a pin-prick of an island on the world map that's dwarfed by the main continent. You'll remain here till you hit level 20. There's no class selection right at the beginning of the game, instead you're required to choose from one of four archetypes - Soldier, Priest, Mage or Rogue - when you reach level five. Your class is then further defined with you reach 20th level.

    SLICING AND DICING WITH CONVENTIONS

You're introduced to Age of Conan's dynamic real-time combat system, where Funcom is making the biggest break from MMO convention, right from the word go. It'd feel right at home in a single-player fantasy action game. Gone is the traditional hot-key bar and point-and-click type of play, and there's no such thing as auto attack. Every key press is a weapon swing, every side-step an attempt to dodge.

Targeting works on line of sight and proximity (however, there's a 'click target' option to make enemies a primary target and the ability to 'tab' through targets is in the pipeline). WASD keys are used to move forward and back and strafe left and right in combat, while keys Q and E attack left and right respectively and keys 1, 2 and 3 are used for forward thrusts, with the attack options represented in a combat rose on the HUD which is split into five segments.

Due to the nature of the beast, it's possible to hit multiple opponents with a single swipe of physical impact.

Instead of special combat attacks you see in, say, World of Warcraft, you have combos that you access as you level up. Operating similar to a beat-em-up, combos are pulled off using sequences of key presses. Early combos provide the likes of damage boosts and damage over time attacks, while higher up the chain and in keeping with the mature, gritty world of Age of Conan, you'll access combos that remove limbs and decapitate foes in gory gouts of blood.

With all this attention on innovating in melee combat in the MMO genre we were surprised to learn there's no dynamic blocking or parrying in the game. Ellingsen explained that dynamic blocking and parrying in an MMO as you see in single-player games is simply not possible with present day technology.

"Also," he continued, "we want Age of Conan to be a mix between character skill and player skill, and we feel that real-time twitch-based blocking could jeopardize that. Instead, blocking and parrying is more of a calculation thing as in other MMOs."

Speaking further about defence, he added, "Equipping a shield gives you a greater block chance, for instance. We also have a system that lets you choose what part of your body to protect the most. You can also jump around to get a higher evade chance.

"When fighting enemies, you should always try to hit the part of the body where they heave least armour. If your enemy is wielding a shield on his right arm, you should probably try and hit the left arm and so on. They will even act intelligently and protect parts of their bodies where you hit them the most!"

It all sounds excellent on paper, right? But what's it actually like to play? While the fighting's solid with decent animation and claret spurts as weapons meet flesh, the combat system's an awkward beast on first encounter, the awkwardness magnified when fighting multiple enemies.

This in large part is down to the control system, which finds your left hand used for both movement, attacking and combo execution while the right with the left mouse button depresses is used to rotate the character and look up and down.

Hats must come off to Funcom for pushing innovation in the MMO genre in this way, but in its current state it's not particularly intuitive and struggles with accessibility. Initial impressions have left us with reservations about the combat system, although for now we're willing to keep an open mind; and to be fair to the developer, it's still a feature that's work in progress.

    MAGIC TRICKS

Where does this leave spell casters? Well, they fall somewhere in between tradition and the AoC combat system. Wielders of the arcane arts can go toe-to-toe and receive combos, but why thrust a puny dagger in an enemy's face when you can nuke them with a massive area-of-effect fire spell?

It's familiar territory as spells are dragged onto a hotbar and cast from there, but employ the same targeting options as hand-to-hand fighting. Tricky? Yep, and it also had us wondering how to heal and buff party members.

Ellingsen explained: "There are basically two to three ways to heal/buff players. You can click on them to target them. You can also click on them in the group window, as with any other MMO. We also have something called cone healing, which basically fires off an area of effect heal/buff to all friendly players in front of you within a certain area (imagine a cone extruding from the player). Of course, there are also aggressive spells that works with the cone casting."

Spell casters too, we were informed, will be able to use spell weaving, essentially experimentation in combining known spells to produce spectacular results. However, the results of failure of experimentation will be... catastrophic.

    HOW DEEP DOES IT GO?

But the catastrophes will have to wait as spell weaving is one of many elements of the game that Funcom's keeping locked up at its HQ currently. We've yet to see any PvP, for which the developer has major plans including sieges on guild-built castles with foot soldiers and siege engines.

Bar-room brawling where a level one n00b can pwn a level 80 god - not seen it yet. Nor bows nor nary an arrow. Mounted combat is another, as are guild-built cities.

Crafting we've not seen at all, nor auction houses, nor much of the main Destiny quest line only hinted at to us that runs throughout the entire game; and we've only seen a very little of the actual game world so far. Instances we've seen but briefly.

And then there's the version of Age of Conan running on DirectX 10 which, from the screenshots we've seen, may actually cause us to poo our pants. The list goes on and on...

Funcom plans to reveal more in August. Stay tuned."

The Logitech G15 keyboard has macro functions built into it, if you don't think hardcore players will use it, you are crazy

The combat system sounds like it is timing dependent, if it is there is a latency issue to figure out.  If they can over come the lag, I would be willing to give it a shot.

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

The combat system depends on what the enemy is doing, if the enemy is moving left.....you need to move into place and do the "best" attack to handle it.

This is what makes it real time.

It doesnt matter if you make a macro and the character makes five beautiful attacks IN THE AIR

So if some players thinks its complex to accually have to be there to fight...then it is complex

I am looking forward to the combat, I just plan on remapping a few keys for the attacks.

However my system is damn near a clone of the one quoted above other than I am still on WinXP rather than Vista and if it is choppy on that system then we are screwed. I have a feeling that is why the game is still mostly in friends and family beta. Ok Funcom, get to optimizing those graphics, chop chop.

what everyone failed to think of is. MAybe it runs a lil choppy cause of vista crap when its coded to run on Xp.

God what is with the negitive ******** that have to start screaming about something when someone says they like it.

all those types need to stop liostening to MCR get some dam sun and get ther ceratonin levels up and try to find the good in things instead of all ready crying about lag before BETA even opens...my god

There is a whole lot of hypothesizing going on about what the combat will be like, on both sides of the fence. Too many people are lettings their hype or hate influence their opinions of how its going to be.

The videos that have been released so far have not been even remotely conclusive in my mind of how it will be in practice. I am not convinced the combat is either exciting or boring, simple or complex. There have been good arguments both for and against, based on the limited information we have now. I have not been wowed by any of them - yet. There is just too much we haven't been shown at this point to truly know. Funcom may be entirely responsible for this lack of concrete footage but.. still doesn't change the fact we don't have it and therefore can not make any real conclusions.

Personally I'm going to be looking forward to the pvp footage that they said would come out of that demonstration in Germany. I would be naive to think that even with clear evidence of how it performs (good or bad), the hate trolls won't keep trolling and the fanboys won't keep plugging their ears, but at least on a personal level I think it can fill in the large void of missing information.

  • JackdogJackdog Member UncommonPosts: 6,321

Well just speaking for myself here but I am still anticipating the game. I love the concept of the fighting system and am crossing my fingers hoping for the best as far as the graphics smoothness. However August is almost here and with the release date only a little over 100 days off I would think they need to get beta in full swing.

If the graphics are still choppy, they had better get them unchoppy real fast if they expect to sell many boxes. Pretty graphics don't mean crap if you have a lag fest on average machines. Ask any Vanguard player or ex player how many people will upgrade their boxes for a game. Not trying to troll or piss anyone off,  just calling it as I see it.

could oyu please provide a quote or link of the source where it states the system they were running it on, what quality of grahpics they were running it on, what OS, and if it was DX10 or DX9? I really find the statement that it is too complex because of six buttons rediculous, unless you only have two fingers ofcourse, and they have no relation to the film at all, plus lag is due to beta, they are still inj technical beta, not gameplay beta, i doubt they have all their servers with maximum services without a flowing income for maintenance.

If you read the 2nd word you will see magazine, this is a series pages which general gives advise and reviews of a particular subject and its not free, this means you will not find there reviews of a game on  the internet because then it would be pointless selling a magazine, however if you buy August edition of PCGAMER or PCZONE you will see the review. Now here is abit of light at the end of your tunnel:

    - Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz Dual Core CPU Overclocked too a minimum of 2.93GHz and beyond. (9 x 333MHz - 1333MHz FSB)

    - Arctic Silver 5 Heatsink compound professionally hand installed by our technicians

    - Asus P5N32-E SLi NVIDIA 680 (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

    - Award winning Team Xtream 2GB Ultra PC2-6400 CAS4 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit (Overclocked at 900MHz+)

    - 500GB Western Digital Enterprise 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive

    - NVIDIA 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card

    - NEC 7173 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Black)

    - Black Sony Floppy Drive

    - Antec NINE HUNDRED Gamers ATX Case

    - OCZ 850W Next Generation Power Supply

    - Microsoft Vista Premium 32-Bit pre-installed with License and CD supplied (64-Bit version available upon request when ordering)

this is one of the systems they use, i know this because i sold it to them, have a look http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-041-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat=

if the game is choppy on this system then there is a problem with the game, and yes its running DX10

If you buy anything less then 64-bit Vista your shooting yourself in the foot and will only have to buy a newer version for 64-bit. Although personally i wouldn't buy Vista just yet I would wait till the next release with service packs included.
