well, IMHO PvP is the way to test yourself and your skills against another player, not an AI mob. there isnt any" test yourself" in zerging one guy that cant defend himself, but that could pwn 1 by 1 any of you
and any Hardcore PvP server will become a zerg feast. thats a cold fact. ppl would stay in town for hours till they get a full party, then they'd dare to step out. jeeeeesus, sooo funny! waiting for hours for a full party!
let me remark again. a hardcore PvP server is stupid cuz human nature is utterly stupid.
you can "test" yourself in an FPS. MMORPGs are supposed to be about "roleplay".
would you run out into the open in a game that had player skill? I think not. In BF2142 people hide and shoot you from miles away. ive seen small teams have victory
meh I lost my burn for this topic since this much better topic for game developers at gamedev where we all discuss real games that are in development which can be built around core concepts really ppl's opinions here dont mean anything cause they dont know the context of the MMO we speak of. They assuming looting in LOTRO are something probably
no one is really reading each other's posts anyway and 99% of the posters are new gen MMOers that dont even know what a skill based game is
"and 99% of the posters are new gen MMOers that dont even know what a skill based game is"
*sigh* There goes that elitist attitude again. Maybe the "new gen MMOers" don't want to learn what a skill based game is all about, as the players that support those type of games show attitudes like yours.
I think that the only form of PvP should be hardcore. Why go part of the way with player killing? If someone wants to spend their time getting the best gear and are scared that they would loose it, then they should be playing PvE only games. I like old school Player Killing. I would play muds where you looted the body and took not only their gear, but any money that they had on them. We should have more of that style PvP. If you don't, then it is like playing poker for fun.
If it's not permadeath , it's not hardcore. Take it all the way .
the idea of Hardcore PVP is stupid, since the human nature is utterly stupid MrBastard1. hey guys,do u know the news? MrNiceGuy finally got his Sword of the Heaven Pwnzord and enchanted it to +54! it only took him months of constant raiding and an absurd amount of ingame money to make it! (MrNiceGuy is a lvl100 player, the best pvper in the game, can take anyone 1vs1 and he has been seen taking 1vs3 lots of times without much effort, hes skilled and knows everything abut the game, he is friendly with newbies and help them find their way, even gives them some gifts as help) MrBastard2: oh noes...we cant leave it that way,can we? MrBastard 3 to MrBastard8: no lol (all make a 8 ppl (lvl80 average) party and search for him in the arena) MrBastard6: he is over there! yahoooo!! (they shameless gank him and MrNiceGuy drops his sword ) MrBastard1: cool,i got the drop. ima gonna sell it on ebay now...$300 first bid MrBastard2-MrBastard8: hehehehe
hardcore PVP works better in games that are skill based progression / sandboxes like EVE, Starport, etc. old skool. games with property at stake. that way you rape someone for no reason you might log on next day to find your city razed. consequences.

PD would perhaps make player run bounties more applicable. no one would tell their buddy to kill their toon if it meant PD. alas, PD works better in PnP due to avoiding network problems
Its natural,...players don't want to lose what they've spent hours tryin to get. And also most (if not all) don't wanna be forced into a situation where they may lose what they have. Rather than have them gamble with their own stuff, I think MMOs should encourage people to duel more often by offering rewards taken from the game itself rather than from the players.
Have regular tournaments so players feel inclined to duel a lot because they have nothing to lose (cept a bruised pride) but something to gain. I know this sounds carebearish, but a lot of players are very protective of what they've worked so hard for in the game and with good reason. I wouldn't want to lose my rare items in a duel because of lag or someone pretending to be the same lvl as me (shadowing)
I asked this a while ago and got a great response, but i'd like to know what the newer community now thinks about this: Let's get something out of the way right away; I really enjoy PVP in most games, including MMORPG's.
I feel the PVP in games where there is nothing to be gained but bragging rights is like playing poker with mates, but not putting real money at stake. Why would you care about going 'all in' when you have nothing to loose really, and everything to gain. Not to say this form of PVP is a complete waste of time, but I do feel when there is something at stake (equipment, money, xp etc), the element and entire conflict is heightened to a new level. The tension is that much higher, the anticipation, everything... because no one wants to loose the shirt of their backs...
I understand that not everyone likes the idea of having all their nice things looted off their lifeless corpse, that's why I propose each game contain a "Hardcore" PVP server (much like Rappelz, but unfortunately its broken at the moment). Once you create your character, and select said Hardcore server, a message appears, something like: Warning, you are entering a Hardcore Player vs. Player Server, where other players can kill you willingly and loot your items / gold / money etc. You cannot transfer characters to this server or from this server.
I for one would probably play 2 characters, my PVP Hardcore character, centred around making other PC's dead while my normal server character would be catered to grouping, Xping, adventuring and exploring.
Thanks for reading,
Ginetti.
Couldnt agree more. Diablo 2 Hardcore needs to be implemented into many more games.

Wrongo, as usual - have you missed my on and off support in the DF area? Or my constant support of perma-death as the real "Hard-core"? I've posted that thought several times.
Pffftt...try a little research before you speak. You constantly speak as if you're the be-all of pvp tideas, but you come across as uninformed at best.
At this point I'd be happy just to see new PVP elements and more sandbox elements. like for instance make it so a small team can fight over a big squad
not interested in personal arguments SWGLover or whatever let's jsut ignore each others posts its a simple thing to do.

Ah okay I just checked your forum history and I was enlightened how much you are against this. I do not think you are down for permadeath especially given your stance on death penalties on the WoW forum

Is PVP with no risk like poker with no money?
Yes - victory is shallow and short lived and losing means absolutly nothing.

a better question: Is PVE without PVP like sex without an orgasm?
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
