It won't. See the Harry Potter MMO thread for why.
MMOs are about money. They take ALOT of money to produce. Harry Potter online would lose money. End of story.
i wouldnt play that in a million years... the movies are good dont get me wrong but..
I HATE N00BS and by that i dont mean people new at the game i mean kids! lol
kids ruin every game and by kids i mean younge ones 10 etc just so u 12 yr olds dont get offended.. ofcoarse i would love a game that had only 18+ people but hey.. its a game and games were orginally meant for kids so i cant complain :S
but yea.. that game would be full of kids and i really dont care how nice the game is if the community sucks im not gonna play it..
"Harry Potter online would lose money. End of story"
I don´t see how a game with such a HUGE fan base would loose money... Honestly.
Harry Potter have fans aged 6 to 60... The movies and books grossed billions... Proof to that is that J K Rowling (the author) is now the richest woman in the UK with 1 billion dollars (Harry Potter generated all that money and that is not even a third of the money that the brand created).
No matter how much this game would cost to the developers it would be probably the largest mmorpg playerbase ever seen (even with all the people that won´t play because they think the playerbase will be a bunch of "noobs")
I loved the books and movies. However, I could see problems with the community with this genre. Im 37 with 2 kids, yes I enjoy games but not some of the communites associated with them.
WoW for example has an awful player community. Mostly due to 2 reasons....
1. Most of their players are quite young. Blizzard even realizes this with their tips at loading screens. Common sense messages (well to adults anyway) like "be polite in groups and you'll get invited back" and "if you like someone, add them to your friend list"
2. Lack of experience...its very obvious that a majority of their players have zero experience beyond multiplayer games. Grouping is painful to say the least.
If anyone were to take a serious jab at developing this mmo they would have to create an adults only server for me to play. I learned my lesson with the WoW crowd.
I understand your concerns about the maturity of the playerbase but I don´t think it´s possible to find a mmorpg without such people.
As long as there are parents willing to buy and pay for the games there will be kids playing them. There is absolutely no way to prevent that.
I´ll use Blizzard as an example since you already named it. If Blizzard did forbid people under 18 to play it I can still see parents making accounts for themselves so the kids could play it. There is no way to control that, and they wouldn´t want to loose such a huge part of their playerbase.
And even when the parents won´t pay for the game kids can always go to the nearest store and buy game cards thus making it possible for them to play without a credit card.
I am affraid that if your problem is with the playerbase you will have a hard time with any MMORPG and not only Harry Potter.
EDIT: There are so many crappy MMORPGs out there at the moment that I would love to see something as interesting as Harry Potter for a change.

I kind of figured EA would make one of these after the release of the 7th book, but me and my friend are kind of impatient so we decided we'd have a go at making this game.
He's good with gamemaker... I'm good with ideas (so basically nothing except direction and organization).
If anyone is still interested in this, we're looking for a sort of Counsel Group for when we have questions that require answers from the average player (i.e. how do you feel about turn-based fights?). We're not far at all, so completion of the game would be estimated to be about 3 or 4 months away if we continue the progress we're making now.
We're basically done with all the physics of the 3D game and just require the images and graphics of it all. The graphics are going to be similar to that of Runescape's, seeing as how graphics dont make the game at all.
The website should be up soon, but until then I thought I'd start some activity and hopefully some excitement about the issue. So yeah.
I could see this being good, but not Hoqwarts online Just using the IP of it all. And instead of like... a click and use a skill its more active so its like constantly dueling. I don't know.... I just think if it were to be good it couldn't be all hotkeys and autoattacks. Sandbox MMO maybe.
It would be fun, but instead of playing in hogwarts (which would get old fast) I would suggest you play a wizard who has just graduated from hogwarts, by doing this you could place the time line between books 5 and 7 and have your wizard choose what his profession and magical specialties would be, and choose where your allegiances lie, order of the phoenix, death eaters, or the ministry. I'd be more than willing to help with concept design and ideas if someone actually plans on having a go at it.
My guess is that as others have said, it will be marketed to the same demo as the books and movies, and although many adults enjoy both the books and the movie, no one would deny that they are 'kid's movies' and 'kid's books'. That means to me it won't have the complexity I look for in an mmo, because it will be one kids can wrap their hands around. I could be wrong, I usually am.
As far as pvp/pve. If they had pvp at all, I would guess it would be things like quiddage (sp?) matches, or competitions like hit the target with your wand, something very innocent. I doubt we would be seeing bloody Malfoy bits and pieces skattered about Hogwarts' after a wizard's dual.
Aren't they opening a Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios or something? I'm sure Rowling will pimp out this franchise as much as she can now that she's finished the series. Harry Potter x-ray specs and Hogwarts herpes cream are probably right around the corner...why not an MMORPG?
So, are you on EVE´s dev team or are they paying you for the publicity?
Just kidding...
But your passion for EVE in most of your posts will definetely make me look into the game. Must be quite good.
Unfortunately, unless you like endless waiting and endlessly boring game play Eve is not quite good. It is absolutely the worst 'MMORPG' I have ever played that wasn't one of the 'asian' or 'home studio' variety. My opinion. I have tried it several times thinking I must have missed some golden aspect. Nope. Just stinks. I can't explain the loyal fan base. Then again I can't explain used car salesman, or drug addicts either.
i sure hope they do this now and i emplore you all to sign tthe petiton posted previously (cant remember link ) but i see it more likely to happen when the kiddies generation of HP fans grow up, more market y'see, but if any game developers reading this you HAVE GOT ENOUGH MARKET ALREADY DO IT!
Plus the universe is dark enough for an engaging adult play, the statue in the ministry with a wizard sitting on a throne of muggles, racist and evil in a supposed childrens book; not to mention the numerous deaths
It can be done they just need to deem that they can make enough money, the driving force of the universe...
I would love to see it, however I don't think there is a development team with the necessary skill out there that isn't already involved in an MMO. At least, that is to do it right. I can pretty easily see the Harry Potter IP handed off to some brand new design team handles it like the one who is making Star Trek Online. They promise way more than they are capable of delivering and get the fan base really excited, then scrap most of it. It's also possible it would be handed off to SOE, in which case it would probably be pushed out the door a full year before it's ready and then suffer several years of total revamps like EQ2 or SWG.
I think it would take a company like Blizzard to pull it off, and I know they are too busy. Blizzard knows not to release it until it's done. They know that with an MMO to not push the limits of technology because you've got a huge potential market (especially with Harry Potter) you could be eliminating. I really believe by making system requirements too high you drive away more people than you attract and you'll never get the populations you would have had if you launched with an easily playable game. Blizzard also knows to keep the MMO simple. WoW is not very complex and I don't think a Harry Potter game should be. It should be something easy to play but with a little depth for those who want to micromanage.
In short.. I can see it being made... but I don't see it being made well. I just don't think there's the available skilled people out there.

could be interesting if done correctly... but it would definatly require careful thought and design by the developers...

I wonder if there will be a caster class. . .

What do you care you dont have to play it?
warryk Not sure i could be in a counsel but does sound like a good idea keep going im behind you 100%
p.s. I would be Ravenclaw

I could see PvP being especially useful in this IP.
Even PvE for that matter.
I could see waving your wand in the game and screaming into the mic: "BIPPIDY BOPPIDY BOOP!!!".
And bang, shes 18 and all's well in the land.
(You'd have to have seen when she was on Conan a few nights ago to get this).
In all seriousness, how's this gonna go?

Meh. I dont think it would work...
considering Hogwarts is a SCHOOL, in which a good portion of the time the STUDENTS would be in class...
The only way it would work in a conventional sense is if the equivalent of grind was sitting in class and learning new skills...
Other than that, I guess it could be like a community-based MMO with no fighting...
Anyone else think of a way they could do leveling?
So, are you on EVE´s dev team or are they paying you for the publicity?

I forgot to add... I would absolutely love to see a HPO if done well, but I'd suggest waiting a couple of generations yet.
For those of you that think the Harry Potter world would be boring or have no PvP in it, haven't read the books, especially the 7th book.
I said this already in a similar thread, but the 7th book (in MMO jargon) is all about massive faction on faction hardcore high octane PvP.
Its dark wizards and Death Eaters against everyone else. Its PvP.
"Don't corpse-camp that idea. Its never gonna rez"
Bladezz (The Guild)
Would be boring. Plus everyone would have to die endgame if it wanted to follow the storyline.
