Fast-forward to present. There are ten times as many accounts in Habbo Hotel as there are in WoW. The game is free though, so we don't know how many people are actively contributing to the revenue. But even if we said only 10% did, that's still very respectable. Then there's Krazykart Racer which has, quite literally, been played by 45 million unique people in South Korea, and is coming to the U.S. through Viacom. Ignored. Audition. Same. Maplestory. Same. Heck, Club Penguin. Same. Dofus, Gaia, the list goes on.
The only game in that list that I'm famiiar with in that list of "WoW Killers" is Maple Story. You've got to be kidding right? Maple Story? That ridiculous 2D side-scroller that is perhaps the worst game ever made? The rest of the titles in that list of "WoW Killers" sound equally ridiculous. Although I do thank you, I will get a full evening worth of entertainment just looking up those games and laughing at them.
UPDATE: I just looked them up, and they are as absurd as I expected. How can any self-respecting gamer list Habbo Hotel, Maple Story and Club Penguin on their list of awesome games? I thought Maple Story was bad, but Club Penguin? That is so retarded it's not even funny. Do you honestly play that man?
Oh and let me guess, all of those games take "skill," right?
Nope, even Paul Barnett stated that they won't bring down WoW (Stating that if WoW is the Beatles of MMOs, you can either try to be like them and become one of the many bands that weren't really the beatles, or you can become a rock band, which they are.) It's just not the same league.
What Paul meant with it is that, there are alot of people and equally many opinions. There aren't any WoW killers coming out. What will bring down WoW is alot of gamees that focus on specific things to which people who want the specific things will move on. WoW caters for everyone. It's a good transition and it'll hold. Until everyone is drained from it. Which won't be in the next few years atleast
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.

You missed my point. I couldn't care less about the game play of these games. I didn't enjoy any of them either (except Audition, which is sort of a light DDR-meets-GH). But I wasn't talking about what I liked.
I was talking about the business side of things.
When people talk about "WoW Killer", you've either got someone who wants everyone to go to some new game in some angst-driven need to see WoW fail, or someone who expects some new game to have more of something important to business that WoW already has. That could be registered accounts, paying subscribers, concurrency, server count, whatever.
All of the games I've listed have something far more than WoW.
Up through WoW, the vast majority of attention spent on MMORPGs has been about DIKU-inspired monthly-fee based immersive online worlds. These have been lucrative but mostly by plying, deeply, a relatively niche audience. I am part of that. I loved UO and old SWG and Wish when it was in Alpha, but always lean towards EQ1-like experiences, of which WoW is the most polished. But that works for us. WoW grew the audience by bringing in to the fold more players just like us. 9 million is impressive, from one point of view.
But how many more games can come for us? None on the radar have that potential. WoW set the bar for that. $80mil and at least 5mil accounts or don't bother. If you can't do that, don't spend as much and then don't expect as much (money, players, media hype, etc).
That's what these other games are doing. And they ain't doing them for us.
The big growth potential is not coming our way. We know what we like and they know how much it costs to deliver us games. Fewer and fewer companies have the will to take that risk. But the next generation, the Gen Y and younger folks, they have different needs. You can laugh at Habbo, but there's a reason so many people go for it. They ain't you nor anybody you know, but they're more numerous and don't come to the experience with as many pre-conceived notions.
You sound like you want a WoW killer that is like WoW but a new game to learn and conquer. So do I. I suspect also that you, like me and others here, are beyond caring how many millions play a game if we like it for ourselves. But the vast majority of attention is not coming this way. It's going to new audiences. So we'll either need to be happy with what does come our way after we get bored with AoC if it doesn't suck, or we're going to have to suck it up and be penguins
I am playing WoW right now in one of the top guilds in the Ursin server. I started thinking WoW was doomed after Burning Crusade came out and ...all...that DAMN NERFING!!!!
-.-' Sorry. I just missed those once-so-powerful gear.

- If "doomed" means "will lose most subscribers and servers need to be consolidated en-mass? Then the answer is NO
- If "doomed" means the game sucks and is no longer one of the best games on the market even though lots of people still play it? Then the answer is YES.
(Either way, even though the game sucks now, Blizzard has conducted the business-end of things flawlessly! (except the concepts behind - and release of BC))

Eventually, the human race will die out, be it war, pollution, or simply evolution. A few billion years later our sun is going to blow, erasing every last remaining molecular trace of the electronic fantasy realm.
Yes, it is doomed
For the immediate future, no. World of Warcraft is too well set to die out anywhere inside of the next few years. There is however a significant possibility that games like Warhammer Online and Age of Conan (maybe even Darkfall a few millenia from now ) will join LOTRO in begining to bleed WoW for subscribers. Even then, it will have a long future, unless Blizzard decides to drop it if their MMO in development is a stellar success.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
If by doomed you mean marginalized, then no. Most of the MMOs I've seen coming out are trying to carve out a market segment for themselves that WoW does not currently appeal to. Whether that means appealing to fans of realistic graphics, PvP, or Sci-Fi/Supernatural themes, most games are not trying to do the same thing that WoW is doing: a PvE focused fantasy world. They will probably end up drawing a lot of people away from WoW, but WoW will still pull a lot of fans of fantasy based PvE because it really is the best game in that genre in recent memory.
it's a lie! it's a scam! Theres only 10 people in every server in WoW! The gnomes found a new portal, only it's pink and it takes you to scotland, in the process it morphs you into a lizard like creature and appear in a lake, then your body disintegrates 10 seconds after breeching the water when theres 1 crazy old man in the distance with a camera in a "out of focus area". Tinfoil hats protect against meteors and alien brain washing waves!
WoW is not perfect,it has its bad and its good. I am playing EQ2 and WoW. Right now I am considering renewing my WoW acct. due to family members now playing it. I just logged off of Icecrown server and that server was completly full people everywhere. I have noticed on Thrall server and on Malfurion server the same amount of people seem to be playing and enjoying themselves. In game you rarely see anybody complaining or upset. I would think WoW is doing just fine from all apperances in game. Hopefully in the future they will improve on things I currently hate like Rep Grinds and Key quests for dungeons. As for EQ2 It was fine as far as population goes I see folks all over that game as well so I would say neither of these games are dying at all. I do suspect disgruntled players for whatever reason are just sinply trying to give these games a bad reputaion. True there are alot of Hardcore gamers that post on this website and dont like either game, but to come on here and claim wow is dieing? Common you guys can find somthing better to do than this can't you?
The game doesn't have any competition right now. MMO's are really a new thing and technology is still changing to support it. Lots of places in the U.S don't even have broadband available. MMO's are very internet reliant. Either way, with new games coming out and developers that understand WoW, EQ and SWG's shortfalls can subsequently make the games more well-rounded and able to bring people away from WoW. I'll be honest, I have over 170 days played in WoW and have been int he best guild on a server and the whole time I found it pretty boring. There WILL be FUN MMO's soon. Look at the preview list.
Is WoW doomed? I mean not like to the point that they lose their supposed 9 million players( which i disagree with). Wasnt it like last month or something that they had 8 million players. They lie too much. Now aside the fact that i quit WoW yesterday due to the hate of raiding day and night, i have to ask this. WoW subs have rising from day 1, why cant they keep on rising? Is WoW doomed? With games like AoC coming out with a new revolutionary combat system and DX10 Graphics, are they doomed? Warhammer has a large fan base, and their beta has 300,000 people signed up, the largest yet in gaming. And yes, their are other games coming out like Darkfall and Fury and such, but those stick out most significantly. Revolutionary LOL, its close ya eyes and hope you hit something.. nothing else. and DX10 will just mean less people cna play it. Blizzard has about 20 million players on BNET I think that out scores WARs fan base by a long shot. Can you give me a link that 300,000 is the larget beta signup ever.. I bet WoW had more. Will WoW lose a large playerbase after AoC and WAR come out? Thats the question of the day. Wont lose any AoC (it will flop) but I'm sure some will go to WAR as the transition between the 2 games will be easy. I for 1 will be checking out WAR.
Imo if you liked wow but dont anymore and plan never to play it again, then it's doomed to you but as many ppl have pointed out good, strong MMOs never die and wow is both, so WoW will not reach it's doom it will stand in the halls of great MMO's alongside UO,EQ and DAoC for years to come.
I placed this this other post because I dont understand why you would state that AoC will flop? What facts do you have?
ive tried ultima online,flyff,everquest,everquest2,star wars galaxies,lineage2,ryl,rappelz,maplestory,rf online, final fantasy 11,and WoW
out of all of them i quit the day after i got burning crusade..okay this is the reason why..RAID.hour after hour, day after day,of endless raids that most casual gamers dont have time for.
To me WoW is doomed but it will not be for a while at least untill AoC and WAR have time to build up power i might even see SoE struggling if WAR and AoC live up to their hype it is just a matter of time to see what happens but to me..Rest in Peace WoW...
I welcome you all to challenge my opinion after all people are going to disagree cause they have their head so far up blizzard's crack to see the light but you may want to switch to something a lot better that is going to live ALOT longer like EQ2 uless its TOO hardcore for ou,which for most WoW players it prolly is...sorry i had to say my piece i like blizzard but C'mon Blizzard a sad excuse for an mmo just dont do anything stupid with Diablo 3 k?
In the past with Blizzard games their player base just keeps growing and doesn't show any sign of stopping. Blizzard players don't care about graphics and for some reason newer generations of people come in and play them. It's quite weird what Blizzard can do and i personally don't like their games but everyone else seems happy.
IMO WOW has just scratched the surface and as more people take to subscription fees it'll pickup even more. However i reckon they should do a free model with in game advertising or something and then it'll skyrocket.
Vanguard could have been a contender but it is simply not accesiblle enough. On top of the fact the game from the beginning was stylised as a HARD game the very graphics engine doomed it to mediocrity. Similar thing happened to EQ2. If you make a game only a million people have the hardware specs to play well how do you intend to kill WoW ?

I despise wow right along with yah, however had to point out LOTRO had 1,000,000 in its last beta, and was the "Worlds largest beta" they dont have that many subscribers as far as I know, but their beta event was huge

The Wow community is still growing even though many of us no longer play. So no it is not doomed in fact its flourishing.

And yes I'm a casual player on Wow, sometimes I need a game where I can loose without swearing too much (eve rulez).

yah not very impressive numbers at all. Most f2p asian games have that many
