I think that the game is going to do well, but I think calling it the next big MMO is stretching it. I love history and sailing games, so I'll play it for sure. However, I think there are a lot of things missing that most hardcore gamers want. Seems that Fantasy and Science-fiction MMOs are still the main attraction these days.
I can see this game doing well, not as good as WoW but I wouldn't be surprised to see it get a million subscribers. My biggest hope is that it will do well enough that we will see developers move away from the orcs, trolls and elves and maybe see some more games with historical rather than fantasy settings.
Well whats it have going for it.. I mean what kinda piratey things does it have, do you have to go from port to port doing quests and fighting the navy or do you just leave town and fight snakes/wolves... If you do fight the navy is it mass enemies coming after you or is it them all standing around in the middle of a field until you engage them. Is it the same old auto attack or at least diablo 2 style click attack combat, or at the very very least some sort of dodging/aiming system.
Only with those can you determine how ground breaking it will be.
i was really looking forward to it, until i found it it was going to have restricted PvP... just not cool, make it a sandbox game like EVE and let the players mold it...
To bad pirates of the caribian ( sp ) is getting released around the same time, people will probably miss out on pirates of the burning sea due to not knowing about it.
Maybe if they do a large amount of advertising before hand it will do well. But for a game thats going to be released in a few months, it doesn't seem to be doing much to advertise to people who don't frequent gaming sites.
Hope the game does well purely due to the developers seeming to care about their community, which you would expect, but doesn't seem to happen much anymore even seen a few post of mmorpg.com lol

1. There are 4 factions: English, Spanish, French, and Pirate.
2. 4 Classes: Naval Officer, Freetrader (think merchant/smuggler), Privateer, and Pirate (only pirate nation can be pirates)
3. As for "piratey things", there's naval combat, and you can board other people's ships. If you play as a pirate, you can keep the other person's ship.
4. Yes, you can go from port to port doing missions, no there's no grinding involved.
5. Combat is completely unique, and too complex to describe here. if you're up for a good read, here's a general overview of the game that should tell you everything you'd ever need to know about it.

pvp areas are not static, player efforts decide what areas are pvp, and pirated ships can be attacked anywhere afaik... loose enough for me
I got high hopes for the economy myself, if nuffin else this game will keep me going until WAR/AoC...
I does look like it might have some potential but I honestly stopped paying any attention to the game when I read that all ships were going to be single person control and you really couldn't have a live crew playing and living on the same ship. Right up to the point I was way into it but after I just lost all interest. If I want and almost single player pirate game there's lots of good choices out there. Otherwise, I hope for those waiting for the game and looking forward to it that it works out for them, there's lots of good people working on the project and they deserve a success.
That's got to be the most ridiculous idea I've heard in a long time. Having a live crew? So one person steers the ship while everyone else does some small menial task? Who would play that game? Everyone would want to be captain, which, coincidentally, is what PotBS allows them to do.

SWG did it..and it was a blast. In a game like this it would be so much fun and would make battles unpredictable and more immersive in my opnion. I understand the reasons for not doing it, but this option would really make this game more attractive if it had it. It would also give the players many more choices and playstyles.
Personally I dont see this game being real big as far as subscriber numbers, not that it matters really.

next big MMO? Don't think so. It might be ok. Like 300k subs or something. The next big thing I bet my money on, is WAR.

Well since the announcement that SOE aka Platform Publishing will be meddling with this game, I no longer have any interest in it. Can you say Vanguard?
i would agree with u, SOE has ruined there share of MMO's but i would not say vanguard was one of them.
sigil didnt want sonys hand in there game so they didnt take or ask for any money from them, but then when it came around time to release and polish the game up they ran out of money and had to release a very unpolished and unfinished game because they didnt want sony to have a say in the game. Sigil needed to start making money to finish the game and the only way for them to get money is to ask sony or to release the game, so they released it early.
As long as POTBS doesnt run out of money, which it doesnt look like they will, they will be fine.

Games played and quit: L2, PlanetSide, RF Online, GuildWars, SWG, COH/COV, Vanguard, LOTRO, WoW, WW2 Online, FFXI, Auto-Assault, EVE Online, ShadowBane, RYL, Rappelz, Last Chaos, Myst Online, POTBS, EQ2, Warhammer Online, AoC, Aion, Champions Online, Star Trek Online, Allods, Darkfall.
However, SOE has shown plenty of ability to screw up perfectly good games... I really wanted to play this game but SOE having their name attached to it really makes it hard to have much faith.

IMO the pirate phase will be short lived, the games just wont appeal to anyone as much this time next year.

Ive played it, and I mean no offense but I don't belive this game will be in the top 3-5 or w/e of mmo's.
Its diffrent I suppose..but it will certainly not appeal to a large playerbase like EQ or WoW did.
Overall I think the game is okay..you'll just have to wait and see what its like for yourselves though.

But we should just wait for the releases. PotBS (fall 07) and AoC (oct 07?)
This game has no particular appeal to me.

Game will be small niche market in it's population size.. at best it may pull DDO numbers, but that would seem like a stretch to me.
I don't have much interest in this game, I'm waiting for AoC and that's basicaly it.
I do hope its sucessful and I praise for a new MMO genre besides cute+paste fantasy.
If this game is getting pushed past AOC and WAR, it's gonna have a really tough time picking up numbers.
