We need a real sci-fi MMORPG

I think the world needs a real good - scifi MMO.   Yeah, I know EVE is great.  It fits a role.  But it is limiting. I am talking about a great universe in the style of "star trek/starwars/flash gordon/buck rogers/firefly.   I mean good-olf fashioned SPACE OPERA.  Not a hyrbrid or cyberpunk.    ONE  With large ships- and small ones AND many races and exotic  planets ,remote outposts and weapons and robots power-suits- space smugglers, evil overlords ect.

The movie IPs that have been licenced are GREAT  IPs but the games have always been 2nd rate or comprimised.  I am thinking something like an "orginal" IP that is influenced greatly by the our classic space opera- without being tied down to it.  (yes, think how many fantasy title borrow from LOTR- it doesn't make it wrong).

Let's face it.  There needs to be a AAA Scifi title.   Think "Mass Effect" MMO style.  It ain't SWG or EVE either.   It COULD be Star Trek Online, but I think the IP as awesone as it is, does limit it- not only in content- but the licencing costs.

Fantasy has UO then, EQ, then WoW, next WAR or AOC.   Scif-fi NEEDS the defining MMO.

Agreed, the Mechwarrior universe would be my first choice for such a game....

Maybe we get lucky and WAR 40K is good... sadly it is a few years away at best.

I agree whole heartedly with you. SWG is fun but not the star spanning, bug-eyed monster killing, lets see whats over there kinda game. And your right, basing it on a movie would be limiting, it needs to be cut from whole cloth borrowing from everything else. Man a MMO that did what Traveller did for SCI-FI paper and pencil RPGs.

I was about to come in here and crash your party by stating that Anarchy Online is the best Sci-Fi game out there....

However you are right, it doesn't incorporate huge ships and small ships and outposts and such. Its more of a ground based game. I'd like to see what you're talking about too. I had a lot of fun playing the SWG space addition, but I lost too much interest in the ground portion of the game after they released NGE.

I love the Mechwarrior universe.  If Your old-school like me, you rember (and played) the FIRST game in that series called BattleTech.  It was a tabletop game.  It's still Popular in a more sophisticated minitures verion now- as well as in video games.

My only advice to developers and publishers is:  JUST DO IT!

YES TRAVELLER!   I remember that from the 80s!

I completely agree OP. I loved Anarchy Online, and I'm currently playing Eve. I'd like to see a melding of the two with an original IP. Thinking within the confines of an exsisting property should be completely out of the question.

    Oh, btw BattleTech was awesome.

There is such a MMO in development.......Infinity

It will have all those features, and alot more.

Dunno if neocron2 fits it, or perhaps, Anarchy online, also, I think Stargate Worlds could be what you want.

I will love a GOOD DEVELOPED sci-fi game, a game with more social interaction, futuristic, where magic is not as "evident" as enormous fireball, perhaps, as telekinesis, or telepaty, perhaps, as vodoo or something like this, perhaps a socialized Shadow Run.

All the games mentioned above are good in one way or another and fits its own role. What we need is something VAST imho. SWG ships are missing the integration with the ground. You "zone" into space. Also, I am a fan of hard SCI-FI, I would rather see real world physics and not so much a " I kill you with my sparkly mind power" but that is just me. 1100 worlds of the Emperium would be hard to do so some dev had better start today.

THis one is definatly one to watch i agree as it incorperates most of what the OP is after.

I will say tho that EvE will soon have avitars that leave the ship and later on we will get planetry stuff so who knows [shrugs] maybee within a year or so EvE will show its still no.1 concerning Sci-fi.

As for Tabula rising and Stargate they dont even come close to fitting the OP's Needs and oweres.

Wasn't there chatter about a dune MMO? This would be a good MMO, maybe not the end all star spanning on but still an awesome setting.

I agree with you every damn MMORPG that comes out is always Fantasy and it is getting old real fast. Company's need to be more creative and bring out more flavor in MMORPGs.

mmorpg's flop faster then mcdonalds cheese burgers these days.

Yeah it would be real cool to be able to have space ships and you can travel from planet to planet, not just click "Go to ____" and then you are there.  And like when you are travelling you might have to dodge asteroids or there might be an enemy who causes interference.  Like having your own fleet, aside from regular walking combat.  All the science-fiction is pretty lame right now because there is so much that you can do, and lots of people don't want to do it all with the chance of ruining something.  But, that is what fiction is and programmers/ developers need to take a risk some times.

I would really digg being able to blast a bunch of aliens and hop into my turbo speed vehicle.

Haha I can see it now.  Flash ahhahh hell save everyone one of us!  Sorry it was before my time, but I've seen some of the movie.  It was actually like watching a comedy.

A space game could be neat, but it would require a lot more then normal fantasy fare.  You would have to create multiple games.  One for land and one for space.  Thats like making two games right there.

Tabula Rasa (<---the correct spelling btw) is going to be more like what you guys are looking for than you may think.  It may not cover all the bases at release but from what I'm hearing it's headed that way. And as for as Stargate Worlds goes it's going to be one of the best Sci-fi game to date imho next year, but thats a year away so really not enough info to say yes or no. TR is doing a lot of thinks to change the MMO landscape so look for that in the near future for some Sci-fi goodness. But if your hear just to bash other games that aren't even out yet and haven't even seen or played thats your deal and I would call you a forum W****.

i just wish EA would revive Earth & Beyond  great game had an awesome community that was fairly large and happy yet they still shut it down, do 5 months of updating and add a basic pvp system, and they would have a hit game again.

TR is not what we're looking for... it may have a few elements but thats about it. Stargate... I think would be better as a stand alone game.

heh... you do know this game is being largely done by one guy right.

Looks like you are into games that while sounding good... lack the essentials to become a hit... ala darkfall and infinity.

This is not to detract from this guy's abilities... I am surprised no one in France has picked this guy up... He is looking for a job.

You're basically just asking for EVE with the ability to walk on planets and have a 3D character model. They are adding this in the next big content update. The only other game that MIGHT please you is Infinity, and it wont be out for another 2~ years. People usually judge EVE by how it is during the 14-day trial, which is the point and all, but, compare that to playing WoW for 2 weeks. You'd get to level 30~ and would have killed thousands of monsters and gotten some new skills. Cool, but you most likely have no idea what the game really beholds. And therein lies the secret of EVE. A game spectacular and deep, but so different that that average man turns around within the first few hours.
