I would go with Tabula Rasa...it seems like its breaking away from the average mmo cuz of its style of gameplay and how 1 player/group of players can change the whole game for everyone...watch all the trailers for it and the interviews...itll be like over 30 minutes but after watching all that I would think it seems like the best thats coming out

infinity also looks interesting and its kinda similar to TR but not having looked at infinity that much i truly dont know. After a quick skim it looks like infinity is all space ship (it prolly isnt, i just didnt read that much about it but if it is...) well idk if its just me but its not my style for 100% space ship style games so thats why im goin for TR

Yet cyberpunk is more in tune with the core of sci-fi than space opera. Space opera is practically a new form of colonial fantasy and has many fantasy elements in it - with various strange lands & cultures & creatures & "powers". In space opera, technology and space travel are just means to creating new fantasy worlds...

It's not much of a leap from fantasy to space opera, as it's often not much of a leap from fantasy to steampunk.

A cyberpunk setting, on the other hand, is generally heavier on the technology and its basic sci-fi concept.  I find it usually has more hard science fiction and more soft science fiction in it.

People usually judge EVE by how it is during the 14-day trial, which is the point and all, but, compare that to playing WoW for 2 weeks. You'd get to level 30~ and would have killed thousands of monsters and gotten some new skills. Cool, but you most likely have no idea what the game really beholds. And therein lies the secret of EVE. A game spectacular and deep, but so different that that average man turns around within the first few hours.
All they are adding is a spacestation "hub". Whoopee! You get to walk on a space station.

It's fine to like your game, but don't misrepresent what it has to offer. There is no interaction with planets at all, including in the "big update".

True, Cyberpunk has more in line with hard SF, and I love it was well.   I think the reason is because it's closer to modern times and "reality".   Cyberpunk/bladerunner/matrix/neuromancer  type settings are awesome too, IF done carefully.  I still see it as a large and growing SUB-genre of SF though.

Steampunk is at least an orginal concept, but the conext of it is so unnatural it's hard to shared "vision" amonst what it is as a genre with regard to creating a world, story and characters.

Looks like you are into games that while sounding good... lack the essentials to become a hit... ala darkfall and infinity.

This is not to detract from this guy's abilities... I am surprised no one in France has picked this guy up... He is looking for a job.

I'm sure many said the same about EVE before it came out too. silly carebears

I am thinking of a game that IS science fiction.  One that is on the other side of the galaxy, where aliens and creatures roam.  I want one with so much PvE that you can get carried away without remembering it is online.  At the same time, someone else in the game could be fighting the largest battle of all times!  I want there to be space cities that are so huge and developed with super technology and sweet stuff.  Worm holes perhaps for quests that require you to go to other dimensions and times.

I am sure you guys know what I am thinking of.  The only problem is that it would never come out anytime soon and would take forever to make.

But really?  Who cares?  I would pay $25 a month for something that great.

And it would have so much to do that it wouldn't give other developers the urge to create games alike it.  It would be the best Sci-fi, there would be no need for fakes.  If people have to say a new game isn't a clone of WoW I think that it means there are too many fantasy games around.

I just hope that it doesn't happen to science fiction!

I'd like to point you in the direction of the Games in Development...

    <<<<<<<<<

Theres stargate worlds, star trek online, tabula rasa.

Theres already EVE online (wasnt my cup of tea) Starwars Galaxies (dont go there, )

***edit*** I played Spacecowboys.com free mmo, kinda manga graphics (3d nicely drawn for totally free!) its just a spaceship dogfight with a mouse type of mmo, its good considering its completely free to download and play forever, they get money from buying bonus stuff but you dont need it.

And yet the Hubs as you call them are almost as big as some worlds i hear also later on [in 2 years] Planets will be opened up.

Besides what other sci-fi MMO has spaceships and avitar walking content........Yep thats right nothing. [Exept maybee star trek]

Infinity - MAY go beta in 2 years.

Stargate - Wont have Ships which is something he is asking for.

Star Wars - Has planetry stuff and some Spaceship content but is it really what he is after?

Anarchy Online - Plenty of planet based content but no Space based stuff.

EvE - Plenty of space based ship stuff. And within 5 months the beginings of Avatar stuff set in stations and in 2 years planetry interaction. is it what he wants only the OP can say.

Tabula Rasa - Some ground based FPS no Space ships.

Star Trek - Definatly some groupe based ship stuff and of course planet based stuff but wont be out for some time.

RF-Online Definalt planet baased Sci-fi but no space stuff [crap game too].

Planetside - No space stuff but some FPS ground stuff.

You know when i did that list i was suprised by how many sci-fi type games there actually are.

Every attempt at anything remotely resembling this has either flopped (Jumpgate? Battlecruiser Online?) or turned out to lack one or more of those elements (EVE)

Yea EvE lacks alien races. Guess its ok tho the interaction between different races definatly makes up for it. Happily tho it will soon be getting the beginings of real Avatar interaction in stations for now. And in around 2 years the beginings of on planet interaction.

I think BSG would be an excellent mmo,  I mean both sides have a goal and all that ......... what a release day being cylon and nuken the crap out of caprica......

Chasing IP's isn't going to work, it NEVER does. All of these IPs like ST, SG are gonna crash hard. Why ask for more IP based games? They will never live up to expectations at all. Look at any IP on the list, all of them have issues. Devs get lazy with IPs for almost any gaming platform. They think the title is gonna carry the day. Its gonna be even worse if they try to cram WoW / EQ style into the IP. They are going to be trainwrecks.

Original works are the way to go. With Sci-Fi IMHO its more important to flesh out the scope and the genre and create from the ground up rather then trying to satisfy preconceived expectations of an existing fan base. Tabula Rasa is also gonna crash hard because it emulates what we already have and offers nothing new and the scope is really damn narrow.

I too would love a mix between Eve,  AO, and SWG.  A skill based sandbox guild vs guild PvP type of game, what I mean by skill based is like UO of old or SWG of old.  I dont mention EvE skill system because while it was cool sometimes I do not like the real time attachment, I actually understand that if some one wastes away their life in the game they will advance quicker.  I hated when I actually had lots of time to play my skills would still just plod along and there was nothing I could do to hurry it.

TR is not anywhere near this,  and yes I am currently in CB, and still there praying and hoping they turn it around quick.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

i've been playing eve for 3 years now, i still really enjoy it. I don't really get whats missing from it (with maybe the exception of twitch combat) . but then i like ships in space, not people wandering around.

As to aliens, most aliens are only ever just humans with latex on their faces, nothing at all really alien about them, just another fantastical reflection of humanity.

there is a LOT missing from EVE. It is not really even an SF game - the only real difference between EVE and some 15th century pirate type game is that you can move in 3 dimensions instead of just two.

There is no real SF in EVE - it is a great economic simulation game - but it is not SF. You could rename the stars to islands in the Caribbean and it would be the same game.

SF is stuff like Starship Troopers, Alien, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and the like.

There are a thousand ideas out there for SF mmo's, but many would require a budget the size of WOW's or more to do a decent jon on.

You obviously never read any Isacc Asimov, Heinlein, Orson Scott Card, Arthur C Clarke, or any of a hundred other SF authors.

".. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die...."

are you refering to the aliens comment? cos that quote is from Blade runner which is where the reflection of humanity, the replicants are showing their similarity to us, their awe at the universe (with the intent of generating sympathy), and wondering why we kill them. Interestingly the replicants in PKD's "do androids dream of electric sheep?" are more alien as the story centres around their confusion about their own lack of empathy.

for good aliens i would recomend Fredrick Pohls's JEM.

and i have read all the authors you have mentioned but i am not sure what you are trying to say.

ah, maybe it is the human aspected storys that can happen with respect peoples stories with each other but i don't want to put words into your mouth. if this is the case then i find the human interaction in eve quite fullfilling.

yeah, thats pretty much it. I also can't see how you could develope good aliens characters in a MMORPG, without them just being 'toons'.

Well to be "alien" it needs to be truely "alien" lol...or different. Almost on the scale of non-comprehension. I've read a lot of different Sci-Fi and sometimes they are able to capture it. All these humaniods with different heads are just hollowood attempts at grabbing cash and our attention. The problem is in a gaming arena, its difficult to relate to playing a 6 headed blob with 6 seperate compartment minds so yeah, we are going to end up with a lot of pointy eared guys and guys that look like someone stuck a piece of bubblegum to their nose and painted them green.

Here is an old P&P RPG that had some pretty "alien", aliens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2300_AD  You will need to hunt down the pictures yourself though.
