Why do so many keep asking about player housing in Warhammer Online? Would you build a house in the middle of a real life battlefield? Probably not, so where is the common sense in building one in a virtual battlefield? As players enter their starting areas, they are already being encouraged to hunt down and kill the enemy - not to build a cozy little hut for the "Big Bad Wolf" to come huff and puff down. It's really quite simple, but still hard to comprehend for some... *puzzled*
This is a dumb post because you don't build a house in the middle of a battlefield, only an idiot would think that a game would actually allow that. It will be an instanced zone where players have their houses, not randomly in the middle of a battlefield, how dumb do you have to be to think this? lol
It seems this thread was doing just fine without you, so at least someone found it interesting one way or the other. You may want to reconsider calling people "dumb" and "idiots" based upon what you read in a not-so-serious post on a forum. Have a nice one.
Why do people assume that soldiers don't have houses. Where did they live before the war started? Granted, with the design of the game, there couldn't be houses on the battlefields. The idea itself is sound for a realistic war simulation. Destroying the homes of soldiers, stealing their stuff, killing their livestock, etc. is a real life tactic that could be incorporated into an on-line game. However, for this to work WELL, it would need to be part of the original concept, not an add on. We wouldn't want them to put something in that takes away from the game. Nor would we want to say, "Why did they do that. It seems like it was tacked on." I do think it would be fun to go around destroying the houses of other factions. It would be fun to kill their mounts and livestock. It could be implemented in a game. The implementation could also directly affect the main war efforts. Slaughtering mounts would reduce the amount of cavalry, slow down the supply lines, and slow down reinforcements. Slaughtering live stock would reduce rations, thus increasing the hunger of the opposing side. Looting farms and pillaging houses could easily benefit the raiding faction. Yet, the implementation of such a concept would be difficult because of balancing and griefing issues. Although such things would be cool to do, at this point in time, I'm not sure if it could be done well enough to be enjoyable in this particular game. If ideas from the previous posts could in fact be implemented in a good way, I think it would make the game more interesting and add a personal feel to the game. Every soldier fights for a reason. Wouldn't some, a mere fraction most likely , fight to protect their homes/loved ones? If these types of ideas aren't implemented, I don't think it will take away from the game. Either way, I think that the game will be fun.
Ok thinking about it a little more there is one option that I think would work. Housing in capital cities. I like this idea because it adds more incentive to protect your capital city. If it falls to the rival faction they can loot and destroy everything in your house. I would even go further and say I would like any kind of bank system to be part of the homes so that they can be looted if the capital falls. This would really make losing your capital city a disaster. I think this is the only way housing would fit into the WAR world.
But where inside the capital cities would you have the housing? It would either have to be instanced or just in its own zone of to the side. I can't see them putting houses throughout the city (although that would be flippin' sweet).
You could do this pretty easily. If you make buildings to scale (which they appear to be) you could seed the entire city with "apartment" buildings each building housing say 20 small apartments... put in about 25 of those building seeded through the city with another 20 building for larger places and guilds (5 apartments per building) and you have 600 apartments people can buy per capital. That is 3600 apartments per server. While that is not enough for everyone... it is a good chunk of the population. Not everyone will want a place of their own as if the devs were smart there would be an upkeep cost.
This idea would not be hard to implement if the capital cities are big... and they should be. How many building in other MMOs have doors that you can't enter... just make it so you can and call them apartments. A little more work yes... but easy to implement.

Don't have time to craft either; but apprently they're putting that in.
Don't have time for dancing but if there aren't some sort of stupid social emotes in the game, I'll eat my mouse.
Besides, tell a soldier he shouldn't have a place to drop his gear and have a few memories from home to remind him of why he fights, and you've got one unhappy soldier. Perhaps "home" isn't the right term. What about "camp"?
Any soldier needs a place to rest his head after a long day of battle, yes?

Any and all crafting will be WAR related. Someone has to repair and make new armor and weapons in the field.
Also Mythic has already stated you won't see any WOW style emotes or dancing. This isn't a dancing game.

Really so how do Orks and Hordes of Chaos fit into this idea of yours? Do you know the IP of the game and story at all? Housing and crafting outside of the WAR effort does not fit in this game at all.
It fits in EQ2, LOTRO and even WoW but not in Warhammer. The emphasis in the Warhammer IP has always been about the clash of great armies on a epic scale. The mundane parts of life aren't the focus of this game or the Warhammer IP at all. If that disappoints you then I'd suggest you should just walk away now and look at another game IMHO.

So your telling me that in this IP people do nothing but fight? The appear full grown in the world with a sword in their hand and immediately run out to battle. Admittedly I don't know much about the warhammer IP but that is pure idiotic drivel. They grew up somewhere. They live somewhere. The greenbacks live in camps and caves. The humans in houses. The dwarfs in mines. and the Elves... trees for all I care(but its probably houses). When there is no fighting(and this game appears at the beginning of the war or haven't you read anything about it?) these people live somewhere. Player housing fits into the game. That actually wouldn't be a bad idea, maybe a little more houses or so just to be on the safe side but other than I kinda like it.

As for crafting...do you think the weapons and armor and clothes these various armies employ just appear> Someone has to make them.

The Warhammer IP is not focused on the daily life of mundane people and the chores they do. That is the great appeal of Warhammer at all. Warhammer based around a epic struggle and clash of armies. It's not about discovering your inner muse.
Oh and there is no such thing as "GreenBacks" in Warhammer. Greenskins live anywhere they want and only live for WAR period. The Hordes of Chaos are almost by default all rampaging nomads and hertics that also live for WAR period.
Please do us all a favor and go read some books, novels and online information around the Warhammer IP. Seriously please do so before you post again.

Orcs sleep anywhere and everywhere. They don't care about building long lasting structures at all.
The Hordes of Chaos don't give a crap about building permanent homes to live in and raise their kids.
They're freaking rampaging Chaos worshiping lunatics who seek to destroy the known civilized world for god's sake. Sure they might make war camps and take over settlements to use a temporary forward bases to launch attacks into the Empire but they don't have any ambition other then serving their chosen Chaos god(s).
In fact almost all Chaos tribesmen live a nomadic life style and roam in large warbands seeking to prove themselves to the Chaos gods.

Does it have to be a longer lasting structure? It could be a hide tent. It could just be a mat on the ground. It could just be some dirt. But you have to stop somewhhere,
Ditto with Chaos. I understand your point that there should be no permanent housing for these races, but it's not hard to create some small instanced area for these folks as a staging ground of some point. I guess using the term "player housing" is throwing you off.

1.) If it's not substantial enough to warrant a "permanent" place it's not worth putting into the game period. What's the point if therr are already NPC structures in place and if you are a Orc or part of the Hordes of Chaos you are essentially homeless? Really think about this.
2.) They don't want you running off to defend your home in middle of a city siege. You are there to fight for your faction as part of an army. That is the entire focus of the game. Individual goals are being made but they will revolve around the WAR effort.
3.) They also don't want urban blight ala SWG.
4.) With the Empire, Elves and Dwarfs you are essentially a life long soldier. A perfect example would be something like the Roman legions where you joined for life or at least 20-30 years. During this time you basically have no use for a permanent home until you leave the service of your factions army.
5.) Mythic has already stated there won't be anything in the game that is frivolous or which takes away from the faction based warfare. Which includes player housing and baking cookies, making furniture for homes, or player marriages etc...

I totally agree with you on everything you said. But it would be nice to have my own personal space for a Hut, House, Cottage or whatever to put up my PvP victories on the walls, to be able to transfer stuff to my characters instead of having the new in proved mailbox, I mean how the f*** do you put large quantities into a f*** mailbox. That is what I HATED about WoW.

Speaking of mods, I do hope they do not have those in WAR -- I can't stand not being as effective as another healer b/c I dont use mods.
Maybe because its an mmorpg, and mmorpgs usually are persistent online worlds, RP people like it, and not every aspect of this game is fighting, there is exploring and crafting, and I think player housing is an mmorpg staple. Name any other type of game that has em? I don't know of any, so I gotta get my homemaking goodness from mmorpgs. It's all about IMMERSION.
You play MMORPGs you can be a home maker? Why not just go to Second Life?
I definitely don't care if they have housing in game, but wouldnt mind either. If they do I think the best way to go would be instanced housing similar to FFXI/PSU.
Misfit, you're saying Greenskins and Chaos don't have permanent structures? You're saying that their lifestyle is that of a nomad? All they do is go around and kill things. They don't need a place to live. If I'm not mistaken, that is your main point for there not being housing for those races. If this is true, how do they have a capital city? Doesn't this little tidbit of information, from the game itself, destroy your logical flow? Besides, you really need to lighten up. Snapping at people because they may not have as much time to do research as you do. Some of us have jobs, wives, and kids. Work-Life-Game balance is key.

Hordes of Chaos live only to further the cause of Chaos and destory the world as it's is now in order to establish the reign of Chaos everywhere....aka...."Blood for the Blood God" and such etc...
Greenskins have housing, goblins have housing, they simply take over someones home, and say its theres, no clue about chaos, or dark elves.
But while we are on the topic, I say, let's have the forces of destruction unable to build houses, but the armies of order are able to build forts, not houses, not cute "lil" cottages in the forest and play dress up mr. dwarf, but forts, and this would not be one sided either, IMO, its just as fun to attack a place as to defend. You could have one with you're guild, or you could have a group of rag-tag players together, though this would pretty much be a guild, right?
Now you are asking, "wow Ferusa, that sounds neet, but dont you think housing(or forting!) is just filler? " The answer, no..don't make it filler , give it a purpose.. give both the defending and attacking some purpose in doing what they are doing.
For instance, a group of Destruction players attack my guild's fort, well they didn't really do anything, for every player we kill, we get a medallion, an axe, whatever..there can be a fort NPC in a city, and you would be able to turn those in for..oh I don't know, a better wall? This would give purpose to actually defending it.
Now for the purpose to attacking the orders housing. Two ways to get medallions. A guild of destruction players decide "hey, let's attack them" , alright sounds like a good idea, they get tokens, or medallions, axes just like order players get for killing them, they can also get those items for doing set objectives i.e (burn that farm, loot that house, beat up that Elf just standing around) but obviously they dont need to build a wall for that non-existent house, so it would go to a vendor too! From that vendor, the guild could purchase gear, weapons, explosives to help destroy a barricade, NPC's to assist them, buff's , etc etc.
So what happens after they attack the fort, etc? They occupy it, no they don't build big gates, but it is theres, if a group of order decide to take it back (no matter who it is) the guild gets there fort back, this would prevent order players from saying "ok go attack that fort, ill take it from you, now we have two forts "
This way would stick to the IP wouldn't it? Dwarves, Empre, and Elves alike build homes, do they not?
Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. -Sun Tzu, the Art of War
And that is one of the most stupids post I have seen, remember WAR is still a mmoRPg.
The OP got a valid point, but still why shouldn't they implement it? But well what use will they have? As they don't really plan on harsh penalties for PvP. So raiding a house won't be possible. And what is a world of warhammer when you can't create full chaos on the side of chaos? To me it would certainly break my immersion if I can't create mayhem and chaos and destroy order if I play on the side of chaos. This includes ransacking houses. There shouldn't be any difference between npc or player owned stuff.

The Orc "Capital" city in the game is actually a captured Dwarf fortress. They use it as a base of operations. Orcs don't build cities period. They don't build homes or any of that crap.
Chaos as whole don't build cities either. There is rumored to be only one large city/fortress of Chaos and that is deep within the Chaos wasteland. It's main use is as way station for worshipers, champions of Chaos and deamons on missions for their gods. That is about the only "city" like settlement in the chaos wastes.

I get your point, but wouldn't a barracks (guild hall) seem more plausible than letting every soldier (player) have his/her own house? A home sounds cute, but I don't think cute is the philosophy of Warhammer Online. Guild halls should be more than sufficient in my opinion.
I cant believe someone who is playing the "cutest" type toon in WoW is worried about Cute? i mean really!!!

Uh, why not just keep it simple? Do few things good, rather than many things bad. In any game, especially PvP-games, I'd rather see good and balanced combat rather than some poor excuse for player housing.

You could do this pretty easily. If your an Orc you live smash things and for fight in to the death in a great "WAAAGH". Hordes of Chaos live only to further the cause of Chaos and destory the world as it's is now in order to establish the reign of Chaos everywhere....aka...."Blood for the Blood God" and such etc...

Don't have time to craft either; but apprently they're putting that in.But your a solider. You are part of an army in Warhammer and your place to live is at the front lines ensuring the the enemy does not get through. You don't have the need or time for such nonsense.

No its not necessary but to say that it is incompatible with the IP is nonsense.
That actually wouldn't be a bad idea, maybe a little more houses or so just to be on the safe side but other than I kinda like it.
Orcs still sleep, eat, etc.The armies of Chaos still employ mortals, which still have the same requirements.

But you're a solider. You are part of an army in Warhammer and your place to live is at the front lines ensuring the the enemy does not get through. You don't have the need or time for such nonsense.

The OP got a valid point, but still why shouldn't they implement it? But well what use will they have? As they don't really plan on harsh penalties for PvP. So raiding a house won't be possible. And what is a world of warhammer when you can't create full chaos on the side of chaos? To me it would certainly break my immersion if I can't create mayhem and chaos and destroy order if I play on the side of chaos. This includes ransacking houses. There shouldn't be any difference between npc or player owned stuff.
"If all magic fails, rely on three feet of steel and a strong arm"
The Orc "Capital" city in the game is actually a captured Dwarf fortress. They use it as a base of operations. Orcs don't build cities period. They don't build homes or any of that crap.
Chaos as whole don't build cities either. There is rumored to be only one large city/fortress of Chaos and that is deep within the Chaos wasteland. It's main use is as way station for worshipers, champions of Chaos and deamons on missions for their gods. That is about the only "city" like settlement in the chaos wastes.

Uh, why not just keep it simple? Do few things good, rather than many things bad. In any game, especially PvP-games, I'd rather see good and balanced combat rather than some poor excuse for player housing.
Use the resources to things that matter.
