Buying Vista? It gets replaced by new OS in 2009. Go Micro$oft!!

Here's the link: http://www.pcworld.com/article/128888-1/article.html?tk=nl_dnxnws

Apparently, MS is shooting to have the follow up OS to Vista, codenamed Vienna, within a 2 1/2 year window of release. Says Vista was an exception. So, basically, they want us to scrap Vista just as they will have finally gotten most of the bugs out, just to buy their new one? I'm sticking with XP 'til they come out with the newer one then. I don't need DX10 that bad.

ooo, sounds interesting. But yeah XP was out for way longer than MS has originally meant for it to be. All teh other MS OS's had about a 2-3 year gap, but Vista took 5 years,  and now another 2 1/2  year gap sounds right

Sounds good. I'll skip Vista, keep using XP, and just go straight to Vienna when it comes out.

I'll just download Vista for my DX10 fix and keep XP as my primary until the price of Vista is like £80

I think I'll wait till I have a reason to upgrade to a new OS, then I will!

Maybe to Vista!  Who knows what little features it has that I havent heard about yet because I'm too lazy to look into it in detail?

I'll wait and get a better xp right now.

My mind has changed so much. Yet I'm still acting like I'm the same.

No you won't, nor will any other person here who has been nagging about Vistas flaws. Vienna will be just as buggy when its released as Vista will be now. Only at that time Vista will be stable, efficient, and have better performance than XP. You may never buy Vista just out of sheer stubborn tenacity, but if you honestly think that Vienna will be more stable when its launched than Vista will ever be then you are delusional. Its an OS, OSes are never stable, they are just less unstable, and they are never the least unstable OS when they are first released. Ya digg?

Stop lying to yourself people. Youre all going to update to Vista, you can stop the quasi-cool microsoft hating act.

I'm not trying to fool anyone. I work on computers everyday and I am familiar with system requirements, how certain software runs, memory management, etc.... I don't hate Vista I just don't see an immediate need to upgrade to it yet. Windows XP still works fine for me and I could see myself running it for another 2-3 years. I would upgrade to Vista but I want to see how its being handled in the next few months, plus I will wait until at least SP1 and 2-3rd  later versions of the graphics drivers come out for my card.

Vienna will probably be a better buy at launch than Vista is at present, both in terms of functionality and stability. That's not really saying much, though, as I've not seen any real stability issues with NT-based OS's. They may have serious compatibility problems at launch, such as Vista's issues regarding sound cards without native OpenAL support, but I can't say any of them have been particularly unstable.

The reason I say Vienna will be a more worthwhile buy is because Vista has always been planned as nothing more than a stepping stone between XP and Vienna. All of the supposedly "new" features that Vista sports are basically taken from Vienna. Vienna, which actually uses a new OS core, will supposedly be focused a lot more on stability and security from the ground up.

Yep, which means that Vista is basically nothing more than a huge beta to get the new system running, and Vienna will be the "real" version of the new OS. Like I said above, I don't need DX10 that bad. The only game even remotely on my radar as far as DX10 is AoC, and it has already been made clear that it will be made to function with DX9.0 "wrappers", so waiting two more years for a more stable version of the new OS, compared to the Vista "open beta", is fine by me.

I have no intention of getting Vista.  I don't like the fact that these companies essentially force you to upgrade.  However by 2009, I will have used XP for 5 years and I can live with that.

I'm planning to switch to Vista.  Its kinda like a video card upgrade every 2 and a half years, only $100.  The reason why is that all Microsoft releases are bad for about a year, so I really don't care when Vienna is released, I just know I will have another year with Vista.

    To the OP:

If you think about it, Windows always had a new OS every two to three years.

    That's normal. Nothing new.

EDIT:  Crap.....why did someone rez this old thread?!?

IMO 5-6 years is perfect for a OS and Windows vista is like £325 for ultimate version which just isn't worth buying to be outdated in 2 years.

While i have some issues with Windows xp it's the best OS Microsoft has ever created and i just can't see why we'd need another OS right now. We havn't come across any restrictions for XP yet apart from DX10 which i'm pretty sure Microsoft coulda have added in a SP3 or something but wont. I just don't feel the need to waste money on Vista when for me it's just not needed.

+ Vista is sooo unstable atm and by the time it's stable in another year the next OS will be out and Vista + XP will be dated as they're the last OS to use the NT technology and Vienna will (hopefully) be something new.

lol that sucks visa looked cool to me but i still use xp for stability reasons

  • ZorvanZorvan Member CommonPosts: 8,912

Well, I've already said many times that I would rather wait for Vienna than mess with Vista.

Windows XP has taken 2000's place, Vista fills in very nicely for ME, and Vienna (hopefully) will be the new XP.

im wondering if i called them up and gave them 50 dollars a year for the rest of my life they would just continually send me new OS's and office suits and the like.

seriously at this rate a lifetime membership might not be a bad idea, then at least we might get decent tech support.
